内容紹介

Millie Alvarez is a college senior with dreams of being a best selling science fiction writer like her favorite author, sci-fi mastermind Luke Danielson. She fantasizes about dating Rod, her handsome, young writing professor, who has a fan base of his own. Of course no one knows this but her two best friends, Fran and Mike.

In the real world, Millie is anything but a success. She always gets casted in the worst roles in her college's musical productions, has a single subscriber to her writing blog, and struggles to be with anyone but Fran and Mike. She even avoids meeting Trent, an exchange student from London who matches with her on the dating app Charmed. Sam always wants to hang out with Millie, but he isn't her type; he's too skinny and happy and won't stop asking Millie about all her favorite things.

But things spiral out of Millie's control when Fran moves out of their dorm room to live with her sister and her estranged dad won't stop calling her to make amends. To top it all off, the pain inside of Millie's chest is worsening. Millie must decide if she's ready to face everything head on. Can she do it? Is she stronger than she thinks she is? All Millie knows is that her life is one big mess that she cannot seem to escape.

Upon reading this book, the reader is placed into the head, heart and soul of a meek college student trying to make sense of her life and relationships, all while having a huge crush on someone who might not be the best thing for her. I see a part of myself in the main character, although I am male and the character is female. This is a fantastic mess, indeed - one I'm happy to have read.

5つ星のうち 3.0 A quick, fun read 2017/3/18

Millie is a college senior. While everyone around her seems to know what they want to do with their lives, Millie is consumed by fear and anxiety. She harbors a secret desire to be a science fiction author and even has a blog devoted to the genre, but she's too scared to do anything about it. Her only female friends are her mother and her roommate Fran, who has just abandoned her to move in with her sister. But Millie does have a lot of guys in her life: her friend Mike; Sam, the set designer who seems to have designs on her; Trent, an English exchange student she meets via a dating app but hasn't actually met yet; the mysterious danish_cupcake who always comments on her blog posts; hot Professor Rodney; Dustin, who asks her for help with a writing assignment; her favorite sci-fi author, Luke Danielson; her Grandpa, who is more like a father to her; and last, but not least, Walter, her estranged father, who is trying to reconnect with her after abandoning her when she was two.

I really wanted to like this book, but I never quite connected with Millie. She has absolutely no self-confidence, even though she has so many guys interested in her. I also found it a bit hard to reconcile her shyness and anxiety with her willingness to perform onstage in a musical theater production. Her own mother is a nurse and can't even spot Millie's anxiety. It also feels like things become too normal too quickly after Millie is put on medication. As for the writing, there is too much telling, not enough showing, and constant over-explaining. There are also numerous editing and formatting errors in the version I read. Finally, Sam is such a sweetheart, but I don't understand why he wouldn't kiss Millie, even given his explanation. If you can overlook these faults, this is a quick, fun read - even given the serious issues of mental health and parental abandonment.

Warning: coarse language. Even though this book is technically in the new adult genre, there is no sex.

I received this book in return for an honest review.
5つ星のうち 3.0 but she knows she wants to stay in LA with her best friends, Fran and Mike and try to be ... 2017/1/30

Millie is a senior in college trying to find her way in life. She isn't sure what she is going to do after college, but she knows she wants to stay in LA with her best friends, Fran and Mike and try to be a best selling sci-fi writer! When things don't go as planned, can Millie hold it together or will she let it win?

I had such high hopes for this book, but to me it just fell a little flat. I just couldn't connect with Millie. I spent most of the book wanting to yell at her. She came across as such a snotty brat, I couldn't help it. She is supposed to be represented as having anxiety but I just didn't feel it. I have it myself so I understand the feelings but I feel like she just seems to have everything her way or she just shut down.

I liked the premise of the book. I think it has great potential and maybe with a little work on Millie as character, this could be a 5 star book. I liked following the college and all the things that go on there. I also really enjoyed Mike as a character. I felt like he was one of the realist things in the book and made total sense. He was such a great friend to both Fran and Millie and kept a relationship going. I give that man props to be able to pull that off!

Sam! I loved Sam. He was such a sweetheart and he was the reason that I finished the book. His character was wonderful and I think could suck anyone into the pages just for him. He did so much for Millie it was astounding. I understand his reasonings and kept every bit of emotion I know he was also feeling. I could think of this man's smile and never get tired of it.

I like that the author tried to portray anxiety and the dangers it can cause on someone. Panic attacks are real even if most of society seems to think it is just people's cry for attention. I wish that the anxiety in this book felt more real with what was being said, but I do still love the thought.

I feel like the author did pull into herself towards the end of the book. I was dragging to read it through most of it and even thought about giving up on it, but as I stated before, Sam kept me reading. The author eventually gains her stride and ends it on a strong note though I feel it wrapped up a little too quickly I still very much enjoyed the ending. I wish she would have had that amount of emotion and feeling that she put in the last 20% of the book to the whole thing.

I am glad I kept reading and was able to find out what happened. I was able to read the last page of this book with a smile on my face.
