If REM hadn't already blazed the trail years ago, Vertical Horizon's Everything You Want would be a seminal album, with its earnest harmonies, fluid melodies, and jangly guitars. And while Vertical Horizon may not have taken many forks off the road to Athens, they have whipped up an excellent pop-rock meld out of the purloined elements. Beginning with the ardent and anthemic "We Are", the pop band who began life on Georgetown's central campus nearly a decade before this major-label debut was released unleashes a personal diary of loss, love, and angst. The band, led by school chums Matthew Scannell and Keith Kane, find they just can't leave their pedagogical leanings behind. Only this time their investigations are into the mysteries of the human heart rather than Zeno's famous paradoxes. But the real paradox here is how a band so derivative can have made such a credible album. This time familiarity doesn't breed contempt. "You're a God", an edgy lament about putting someone on a pedestal, could have been lifted right out of the Alanis songbook, but it still manages to shimmer on its own merit, as do most of the 11 songs. --Jaan Uhelszki

元はアコーステックジャムバンドだったらしい。このへんのバンドは日本ではブレイクしにくい。なぜならフーティー＆ザブローフィッシュ、ソウルアサイラム、デイブマシューズバンド、ジェイホークスあたりと似ていてアメリカンルーツロックバンドだからだ。そのへんに注意したほうがいいと思われる。個人的には『アベレージ』なバンドであると思う。なので『ビッグネーム』から前座やってくれってリクエストは多いはずなのである。　　　　　１０点中６点

イメージ変わったなあ

初めの頃と大分、雰囲気変わっちゃいましたね。
ヴォーカルの人スキンヘッドだし。
アコースティックギターかき鳴らして
泥臭いロック＆ポップス歌っていた頃とは
大分、曲調も変わってます。
結果的に２、３曲目が全米で大ヒットした訳ですが
他の曲もかなり良いです。
アルバム全体を通して２や３あたりの雰囲気を
持つ曲が殆どなので、とても聞きやすいアルバムだと
思いますよ。５、８曲目あたり、僕的に大ヒットです。
要は、売れ線の曲が好きか否かという問題だと思います。

billboard年間ベスト５に入ったEverything You Wantが最高に良いです
平凡な歌詞だけど胸にぐっと来るしなにより曲がいいです。聴いたとき
震えがきてそれから何回聴いたかわかりません。アルバムも通してやさ
しくスムーズな曲が多く聴きやすいと思います。

一聴すると、普通のロックですが・・・

一聴すると普通の「ロック」ですが、その哀愁にあふれたメロディは絶品。演奏自体は平凡なものですが、それを補って余りあるほどの美しいメロディが溢れています。現代のアメリカン・ロックの象徴的な存在と言って良いでしょう。ただし、彼らの音楽に「スリル」を求めてはいけません。ただひたすら、グッド・メロディと心地よいドライヴ感に身を委ねましょう。ストレートな楽曲が多いため、飽き易いと思われる方も居るかもしれませんが、僕個人としては、カーステレオで気持ち良く聴いています。ほどよく心地よいドライヴ感とグッド・メロディが、ドライヴをより快適にしてくれています。

タイトル曲が何といっても最高です！ビルボードでもその年のベスト１０に入るほどヒットしました。さわやかでキャッチーなメロディーにやや切ない歌詞が絶妙にマッチしてます。このバンドにはロックバンドにしばしば見られる「病んだ」イメージは皆無で爽やかさが感じられます。ダイナミックなヴォーカルはどこまでも広がるアメリカの大地をリスナーに覚えさせます。

初めて聴いたVERTICALHORIZONの曲は、アルバムの8曲目「Send It Up」です♪ラジオで聴いたのが最初だったんですけど、これは一度聴いただけで惚れました！さらっと耳に入ってくるのに、なぜか心に残って忘れられないメロディ！必ずもう一度聴きたくなる、そんな曲です☆アルバムの曲全体的に、聴いていて気持ちの良い曲ばかりです！これはほんとにおすすめのアルバムです。ぜひ一度「Send It Up」聴いてみてください☆

ひたすら聴きやすい。
特にシングルカットされている"everything you want"と"You are"は音に広がりもあるし、いい曲である。
けれど、いまいち一流になりきれない感じ。まだまだなのに、チャートに載っちゃったって感じ。ポップスが純粋に好きな人にはお勧め。

Matt Scannell is the best song writer working today. Vertical Horizon is the most diverse band in the mainstream music scene and GO is hands down the best record to surface this year. I had never heard of VH until "Everything You Want" became a number one single a few years back. But since then, I have purchased and listened to all of their recordings. It is hard to believe that what began as an acoustic duo has matured into a band of such scope and depth that they easily move between arena rock anthems (ONE OF YOU & SUNSHINE), funky/sexy/crazy/cool tunes (WON'T GO AWAY), can't get them out of your head all day, radio friendly singles like I'M STILL HERE, ECHO and WHEN YOU CRY, and break your heart/slit your wrist break up songs like FOREVER, GOODBYE AGAIN and IT'S OVER. As if that's not enough, they end the record with a spooky, haunting tribute to all that was ever great about Peter Gabriel entitled UNDERWATER that leaves me shaking my head and wondering where the hell did these guys come from and am I the only one that is hearing this? This album is a rollercoaster of emotion and electricity with both acoustic and electric guitars that leave me both exhausted and energized. All that I can do is listen again and enjoy the ride.

I listened to this album back when it was released in the early aughties. Then in late 2017, I was reminded of the band when I chanced upon the group Duo, which was a collaboration between VH founder Matt Scannell and Richard Marx. So, I proceeded to purchase a copy of this CD and I must say that it still sounds as great as it was 16, 17 years ago. What I loved about the album was the great songwriting. The first four tracks were all released as singles but some of the deeper cuts like You Say, Miracle and Give You Back could have been singles in their own right. Of course, a couple of the tracks are pretty ordinary but overall, a great album. This album marked the beginning of the band's alternative rock sound (they were more of an acoustic band in their early days).

I have to disagree with many of the people who have reviewed this album before. I had never heard VH before this CD.... however, I didn't buy it for "Everything You Want"; I hadn't even heard the song. I came across the CD while looking over CDNOW and listened to samples of it, and in fact "EYW" was my least favorite of all the songs I heard. Of course, it later grew on me, as did almost every other song on this CD. My personal favorite on the whole CD is "All Of You", no one else has even mentioned it but I think it's an excellent song with the best hooks I have ever heard. The only songs I don't like are "Shackled", because I love Matt Scannell's voice but Keith Kane's is whiny and annoying; and "Grey Sky Morning", it's a little too slow and lamentatious for my taste. But the other songs more than make up for the ones I don't like. Definitely buy this CD if you're into the good kind of pop/rock, rather than the cheesy kind.

I love this CD, the last CD I bought was Third Eye Blind, which we like, but not like this one. I heard Everything you Want in traffic, waited for the band name, wrote it down while driving, went to Amazon, previewed it and liked what I heard. ( isn't it great to listen to snippets of the music before you buy?)I wasn't that keen on their other album This one though has got the potential for all of the songs to be Top Ten. So enjoyable to listen to, somehow they manage to not sound the same, and I love the thoughtful and interesting lyrics. Having good lyrics also makes this alot of fun to sing with .I can not remember the last time I bought music this good. Any age could love this one! Get it. If for some weird reason you don't love it, all your friends will.
