In a breathtaking grand finale, the world’s mythical pop-up masters unleash monsters and dragons that have prowled countrysides and imaginations for centuries.
(Ages 5 & Up)
Lurking behind this intriguing cover, a Kraken grapples with a ship on the high seas; dragons from Eastern and Western traditions spring to life; and a Medusa, snake-hair twisting and hissing, turns the reader to stone. Deeper inside, an ancient, decrepit vampire rises from his coffin; a lycanthrope is caught in the light of the full moon and transforms; and Bigfoot hides behind a tree, ducking his human pursuer. Master paper engineers Matthew Reinhart and Robert Sabuda unfold the legends and lore of cultures around the world to reveal these stunning creatures and many more. Pop-up fans and fantasy lovers will be equally enthralled by the dynamic creatures depicted in this astonishing volume, the climax of the Encyclopedia Mythologica trilogy.
Standout scenes include a Chinese dragon with an unfolding crepe paper body and a vampire whose coffin lid lifts as he awakens. Once again, Reinhart and Sabuda have created an offering distinguished by clever details, superb execution, and a sense of wonder.

There's Medusa in all her reptilian glory and hypnotic eyes representing Monsters of Antiquity; a ferocious green dragon symbolizing Terrible Serpents of the West; and a show-stopping red dragon snaking its circuitous body, partially composed of tissue paper disks, across the page embodying the Majesty of Eastern Dragons.… Marvels of paper engineering.
—The Horn Book (starred review)
A spectacular climax to the authors’ Encyclopedia Mythologica, offering a world-spanning gallery of ancient and modern monsters portrayed in thrilling 3-D...another tour de force of paper engineering.
—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)
In addition to showing readers that fear-invokers are as old as civilization itself, the well-written text makes interesting connections between monsters and aspects of modern-day life and culture… Another winner in a delightful series that combines solid content, handsome artwork, and a wow-inspiring presentation.

Then recently I found out the package I mailed to the Hunsakers was sent to the WRONG CITY!! The USPS sorting facillity made that boo-boo and it resulted in the delivery being in transit for more then 14 days! Hopefully the package will reach the Hunsakers soon! And just when I became tired of waiting for my DRAGONS pop-up to show up it was dropped off at my front door today, Dec 5, 2013!!! I told swati21 that these pop-up encyclopedia books are to beautiful to send to the wrong people because of an order mix-up!! So about this book, this 2011 book by Rhinehart and Sabuda is their most stunning collaboration up to date I believe! The first 2 pages have a magnicent Medusa gorgan face with multiple snakes for hair!! When closing the pages the frontal snakes need to bend downwards for the book to close properly! Behind the Minotaur mini pop-up is a wonderful centaur archer pop-up! When you open it you may need to press up his head to get the head to stand up right when this mini pop-up folds and unfolds when you open and close the mini pages! He has a bow and arrow ready for shooting! I love how Medusa's eyes look through the eye openings of her scarey head!! The next 2 pages show a great barrel chested dragon with an opening and closing mouth and a mini pop-up has a red dragon that battled Beowulf and blows out fire as you fully open this mini pop-up ! As the cut out fire spits out his tail streeches outward! Amazing!!! And I like the mini Gargoyle pop-up too!!
In contrast to this pop-up are the next 2 pages that have a chinese dragon with a red accordian like body that expands and streetches with the opening of the pages! This is the most unusual and delicate of the pop-ups in this book! You don't want little kids to hurt the dragons snake like red thin paper body do you!? Next come pages revealing a tentacled Kraken sea monster attacking a ship like the giant squid in 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA! It looks great from all angles and the ship's sail looks like it is blowing in the wind while the monsters tentacles are writhering like snakes!! A mini pop-up shows viking god hero Thor wrestling the mighty Midgard serpent! His frightened troll companion cut the fishing line so the serpent would go back into the sea! (See the GODS AND HEROES by Rhinehart to see pop-up versions of Thor and Loki in action!) The detail in these books goes beyond what the video can show on this website!! The next 2 pages show a Nosferatu like vampire lifting his casket lid to scare our socks off! Yes! Finally a vampire depicton that does NOT look like they came from Beverly Hills 90210!! Remember KOLCHAK THE NIGHT STALKER tv series!!? More like that!! And You can see a poor man change to a werewolf by opening the mini pop-up!! And a Zombie pushs back a tombstone with the opening of this mini pop-up!
Throughout this book is informative text on the worlds scarey myths and creatures. And last, but not least, A menacing Abominable snowman, who looks like a white KING KONG, rises from the book's pages with mighty muscles bulging! And a brontosaurus like dinosaur menaces african natives in the congo! In contrast a mini pop-up reveals a shy Big Foot creature hiding behind a tree while a woman explorer tries to find him. When you turn the pages of this pop-up she turns around too look in the other direction but the sasquatch has gone around to the other side of the tree!! This shows the author's sense of humour! Like the other pop-up books by Rhinehart you may wish to keep little ones away from the intricate foldouts because this is truly a work of paper sculpture art! I ordered the books GODS AND HEROES and FAIRIES AND MAGICAL CREATURES by Rhinehart from Bookseller USA without having any delays or mishaps like I had with swatti21! At least swati21 sent me the DRAGONS AND MONSTERS replacement copy. But Bookseller USA provides tracking on their orders for customers to see! Swati21 does not! I got this book and the others for a great low price of around $16.00! Get these masterpieces at this kind of price from seller Bookseller USA!! UPDATE: the Hunsakers got their package before Christmas so all ended well!
Cheaper pop-up books can fold in wrong when trying to close them, but these close just right every time! They are so complicated in design that I am afraid that when I go to close it that it will bend or crease wrong, but it closes smoothly and correctly.
I bought 5 of his books for Christmas present and read them all ahead of time. You can tell right when you open them that someone put a ton of love and pride into the planning and production of these books. Highly recommend these!
