ソウル感あふれる美しいメロディーとリズムのアルバム

自分としてはこのアルバムは所持していたのだがディスク２のリミックス曲狙いで買い直した。全体的にはグルーブ感溢れるしかも美しいメロディーが心地よいアルバムだと思う。自分としてはemergency, fresh, misled, cherishなどのリミックス版もバッチリ収録しておりしかも同じリミックス版でもバージョン違いの曲も入っておりこのアーティストのファンならたまらないと思う。以前の彼らのヒット曲のノンストップメドレーの曲なども収録しておりとても豪華な内容のアルバムだと思う。どうせ買うなら２枚組のリミックス版の入ったほうこっちのほうのCDをお勧めします。

１９７８年にリリースされた「Ladies　Night」。ユーミール（エミール）・デオタートをプロデュースに迎え、加えてリードシンガーにジェームス・JT・テイラー（以下「JT」が加入したこのアルバムのヒットで低迷期から脱出したKool&The Gang（以下K&G）。人気が低迷し始めたEW&Fやコモドアーズと入れ替わるように、この後ヒットを連発していくのはブラックミュージックファンの方はご存じのとおり。
８４年末にリリースされたこのアルバムは、K&G自身のプロデュース、曲目は以下のとおり。

Tr１、３のアップナンバーではエレキギターのカッティングをアクセントにしているせいか従来のアルバムより「黒さ」がある。一方デオタードマナーを引き継いだTr4、7といったスロウも聴き応えありのおいしいアルバムである。聞き所はリミックスやエクステンデッドバージョンを収録したディスク２の方。サウンドをシンプルにして曲の良さとリズムを前に出したtr１、アルバムバージョンにスムース感を加えたTr２､ギターのカッティングを押しだし、パーカションやクラップを加えて「黒さ」を強調したTr３、スローの代表曲と思っているTr４は波の音をいれてドラマティックな雰囲気、スムースジャズと言ってもいいほどサックスが歌っているTr８、そして過去のアルバムからのヒットメドレーTr５など聴き応え充分。なによりも曲のできが良く、あまり黒さを感じさせないJTのボーカルが「黒いサウンド」にうまくはまっている。bbrからリリースされたアルバムは何枚か持っているがリマスターも丁寧で１２インチも「痒いところに手が届く」バージョンを収録してくれている。今聴くとK&Gとしてはマンネリ感を脱するためか、デオタードマナーを引き継いでいたそれまでのアルバムに黒さを加えたところに「最後の踏ん張り」をしたアルバムだと思う。４曲のシングルがすべてPOPチャートで２０位内に入ったのはこのアルバムだけであることからも、そのことを感じる。K&Gとしては８６年にアルバムをリリースし３曲のヒットを出すが、８８年JTがソロシンガーのためK&Gを脱退。その後もグループとしてのアルバムは出ているが、方向性に迷っているようなアルバムになったのは残念。JTもソロアルバムを３枚出すもヒット曲は出すことが無く（ソロ２枚目はいい出来と思うんだけど。）９６年にK&Gに復帰するが再度脱退。両者とも活動はしているようなので、ファンの方はチェックしてみて。２００７年に出た「STILL KOOL」はいいアルバムですよ。

やはり素晴らしいのです。沢山のアルバム、沢山の名盤がある彼らですが、ポップな側面を打ち出しつつも、底辺にあるkoolさで、カッコよく聴かせてくれます。ただの売れたポップアルバム…というにはあまりにも良く出来過ぎています。

活動はじめてから約30年！FUNK BANDとしては異常に長寿なKOOL＆THE GANG。最近のLIVEでは、以前のファンク色の強いサウンドに戻ってきたような気がする。
　このアルバムはJ･T･テイラーのVocal時代のPOP/ROCK色を強く感じさせる作品。タイトルナンバーの「EMERGENCY」。ビート的にはファンクじゃないな･･･こりゃROCKだぜい！かといってROCKそのものかと言えばそうでもなくて、重たいビートにFUNKっぽいアレンジがほどこしてあり独特のサウンドになっている。
　ヒット曲「FRESH」「CHERISH」なども収録。FUNKファンには物足りないかもしれないが､POPな曲が好きな人にはお勧め。
　ライブでもよくやる曲が多いので、KOOL&THE GANGのLIVEに行く人は要CHECKだよ～!

Kool and the Gang’s “Emergency” was released in 1984 as the Gang was in the middle of a hot streak. Their five previous studio albums all went platinum and spun off numerous pop, R&B and dance hits. Kool and the Gang brilliantly combined R&B and commercial pop and the results were mesmerizing. “Emergency” catches the band at their peak and is possibly a defining moment in their 40 year plus career. Side one (as it was back when the album was released on vinyl) contained 4 back to back Top 10 smashes. The pulse pumping title track, the fourth and final single to be released from the album, has a rock feel but can still pack a dance floor. “Fresh” is a sexy mid-tempo groove that is irresistible, funky “Misled” is another groove that will make you want to dance. Side one closer “Cherish” is perhaps the album’s shining moment, a stunning ballad with inspirational tones. The words and the melody weave together perfectly and can still send chills down your spine.

With side one complete, it is almost hard to believe that there is a side two to this gem but there is and it is as strong as side one. “Surrender” keeps the party going. “Bad Woman” is a sexy R&B slow burner that should have been released as the fifth single. J.T. Taylor does an amazing job on this sexy midnight groove that is as good as anything Kool and the Gang ever recorded. Album closer “You Are The One” has killer sax work and is another song that is fun to dance to.

Big Thanks as always must go to Big Break Records for re-mastering “Emergency” and for doing such a fine job. The liner notes here are very informative and contain an interview with Ronald "Kool" Bell. His reflections are great to read. This double CD re-master is a treasure for the fans as it contains a plethora of bonus material. All the singles from the album as well as the title track are also presented here in their Single versions and in their 12” dance versions, including the rare 12” remix of “Cherish”. The album’s colorful original album cover art front and back is preserved as well. A must have for any R&B lover and collector.

This 2CD 2016 Deluxe Edition comes in a double fold open card digi-pak (with CD trays) and comes with a full colour booklet featuring linear notes by NYC based writer Christian John Wikane and a track by track analysis helped along by Mr Kool himself Ronald 'Khalis' Bell. Remastered from the original masters by Nick Robbins CD One features the original album plus the 7" single versions. CD Two is where it gets very interesting, here you get all the 12" versions plus remixes, extended versions and even a megamix... First off: CD Two Track 1: Fresh (12" Remix) appeared only on European imports and is a great addition to this CD. There seems to be a little confusion over what some of the versions were originally labelled as, for instance: CD Two Track 9: Fresh (12" Dance Remix) is the US Dance Mix by Mark Berry - which was originally labelled as 'US Dance Remix' on the b-side of the UK 12" vinyl of Cherish. I am very glad this version is included here as the pre-order mislabelled track listing had me worried it had been left off. Talking of Cherish, CD Two Track 4: Cherish (12" Remix) is the 'Saxophone Edition' as I knew it from the UK double pack 7" of Cherish purchased in '84. There is also another Cherish (Saxophone Edition) on CD Two Track 8, this version is largely instrumental and includes a sax verse and sung chorus - no main vocal, not sure where this comes from as it was not on any of the UK vinyl or previous CD releases that I bought at the time. Just to mention, the album versions of Fresh and Cherish were the versions used for the original UK 12" releases, the singles were edited versions of these. CD Two Track 2: Misled (12" Remix) is the 'Dance Mix' as titled on the UK 12" vinyl. Great to see all these versions included and also pleased to see the 'Throwdown Mix' a hits medley, the mini mix of Fresh/Misled and the many Emergency remixes. All in all a very comprehensive collection and now after going through the mislabelled tracks, I cannot find anything missing (from a UK release point of view). The remastering sounds great, the packaging is stunning, the booklet informative. What more could you ask, a great example of how to put together a 2CD deluxe edition. Well done BBR. I was so lucky to have come across this album on Amazon. I'd been seaching for the song "Bad Woman" on music sharing sites for a while and never got a hit. I think this album along with Kool and the Gangs "Straight from the Heart" are some of the best things they ever released. Both albums have a 80's feel to it, showing how much the band had changed from the funky 70's- not that there was anything wrong with that music I love Jungle Boogie, Open Sesame and the best Summer Madness- But after J.T. took over the lead voacals the bands style changed I guess with the times. At any rate after the iconic "Ladies Night" it was a span of 10 years and a lot of great music. I want to thank Amazon for collecting and making available this and other old school bands for collecters like me
