著者について

Ursula Le Guin was born in Berkley, California, in 1929, daughter of the writer Theodora Krober and the anthropologist Alfred Krober. Her published work includes twenty-one novels, eleven volumes of short stories, three collections of essays, twelve books for children, six volumes of poetry and four of translation. Among her novels are the The Left Hand of Darkness and The Dispossessed, both winners of the Nebula and Hugo awards, Always Coming Home, winner of the 1985 Kafka Award, and Four Ways to Forgiveness. In 2009 she won her sixth Nebula award for Powers.

Penguin/Puffin published the first volume of the Earthsea books, A Wizard of Earthsea, in 1971. The Earthsea books have been translated into many languages around the world and are global bestsellers.

　話者によって叙事的に語られている点と、世界の均衡を崩さないために、力のある賢者（魔法使い）といえどもみだりにその力を使うことを控えて生きなければならないという設定の厳しさが、余分なものをそぎ落として清々しいとでも言うか・・・格好いいです。

　"Tehanu"は、"The Farthest Shore"にすぐに続く時系列にありながら、これ以後、作風ががらっと変わっています。それまでは「男達の物語」、その後は「女たちの物語」といった印象を受けます。作者が人生経験を積み、また、フェミニズムに傾倒してジェンダーについて意識するようになっていったためのようです。

※　値段に惹かれてこの合冊を買ったのですが、３ｃｍ５ｍｍと結構厚みがあってハンドバッグに入らず、結局各巻別々の物を別途購入しました。

子供の頃の感動をもう一度

Earthseaをゲド戦記三部作(当時)として最初に読んだのは、小学生の頃だった。それまで歴史小説狂いだったませた子供に、児童文学の良さを最初に教えてくれたシリーズだった。第四作が出たときにはすでに大きくなっていたので、長らく悩んだ末に購入したのがこの本。詩的なル･グインの原文に触れ、改めて重厚で荘厳な世界に引き込まれることとなった。Tehanuはこれで始めて読んだが、個人的には素晴らしい作品だと思う。こちらの加齢のせいでゲドとテナーの心の機微を感じ取れるようになったためか、本書で最初に読んだために、三部作との統一感を気にせずにすんだせいか。前三作も読みなおしてみると、少女期に愛した第一作より第二作が気に入った。この作品のゲドに年齢的に近くなったせいもあるが、女たちの生活や儀式の描写に改めて心を奪われたためだ。主人公の一生を追っているため幾つになっても得るものがあるシリーズ。今日届いた最新作"The Other Wind"も読むのが楽しみ。

これだけの本にしては、レビューの数が少ないので、残念。いい本を読んだときには、その本について他の人がどういう感動を受けたのか見てみたいものです。

『闇の左手』や『所有せざるもの』とは違い、この本は作者が、子供を対象に書いた本なので、世界が限定してあるのでしょうが、その分表現とストーリー展開が極限にまで凝縮され、殆ど詩或いは神話の世界に近づいているようです。

読者の世界観の形成に影響を与えるという、物語の魔法を含んだ、稀な作品の一つだと思います。

Anyone coming from Rowling, Lewis, Pratchett or Tolkien should be warned: this is not a matter of 'flash, bang crash' fantasy or 'jolly parties' but a much more serious matter. The central character is admirable and loveable but he has to overcome his flaws and is always ready to consider that his best intentions may have caused harm. There is no simple division into good and bad groups such as 'Orcs versus Elves' or 'Order of the Phoenix versus Death Eaters' but all peoples are capable of goodness or evil. I have sometimes wondered whether there's a touch of racism in Tolkien's good Elves versus bad Orcs; to label an entire species or race as good or evil seems simplistic to me. There are also fewer types of being with just Dragons (intelligent but to some extent amoral) and humans, the majority of whom are non-white. Racism is not a major problem for this world, though there is race prejudice and sexism is shown as such and is dealt with particularly in the second book and the fifth (not included in this volume). If you can adjust to the pace and are able to appreciate the many virtues of Le Guin's writing you will take pleasure in coming back at any age. Scorpion de Rooftrouser (age 61). Since originally posting this I have read Pratchett's "Tiffany Aching" books and in those too you will find a less glamorous view though Pratchett can't resist (very skilfull) caricature for humorous effect. I couldn't day that one's better than the other but would probably choose Le Guin for myself.

I first read the Earthsea books when I was a child. That was forty years ago, but snippets of the stories stayed with me - that is how powerful these tales are. I decided to revisit them and buy this book, and they are even better than I remembered.
Ursula le Guin is a master storyteller. Her world of Earthsea is alive not just with fantasy and magic but with reality - the glitter of stars in the night, the sheen of an apple, the whisper of a bat's wing. The language is so simple, but powerful as poetry. If you have never read these stories, I thoroughly recommend that you do so.

I first read Wizard of Earthsea as a child and its impact on me was profound, unfolding in new insights into how the world might work as I grew up. I remembered it through my teens and when I re-read it in my twenties realised just how powerful a story it was. Le Guin's control over language, her intense focus on story, and her ability to bring a fully imagined world into play with barely any description is legendary. Written over the course of many years, this quartet traces Le Guin's own philosophical journey and does so through captivating narrative. These books work separately and together and are as thought-provoking now as when they were written.
