John Boorman's film about four city-dwellers getting their comeuppance while canoeing down a doomed river through inbred-land, exercised strict authenticity through a virtual absence of incidental music. So the idea of a soundtrack seems a bit "spooky" to say the least. The film's mere handful of music cues are all variations of the innocent-turned-demonic "Banjo Duel". The heartstopping rushes down the murderous Appalachian river needed no accompaniment, but the banjo theme proves a simple, effective tool in psychologising the countryside. It expresses the ominous "something" in the river, it shows up the city dwellers' short-lived oblivion, and "mickey-mouses" Jon Voight's desperate slide off the cliff. Once again John Boorman showed audiences that less is more. In the case of Deliverance, buying the soundtrack will ironically hold the opposite experience to watching the video. You're not buying a movie soundtrack at all, but some nice country "geetar" and banjo tunes that have nothing to do with the film--the only way to relive the movie experience is playing "spot the evil" during the title track, "Duelling Banjos". Deliverance the album will be the quirky item in your Bluegrass collection. --Yngvil V.G.

ここでリードギターを弾いてるのはクラレンスホワイトではないだろうか、
クラレンス独特の強烈なシンコペーションはあまり強く感じないが、聞いた
事のあるフレーズが所々聞こえてくるのだが？

参加メンバーは　G. Terry/fiddle;M. Brickman/banjo,guitar;E. Weissbberg/banjo,mandolin;C. White/guitar
リード・ギターの区別は、フィンガーで弾いているのがM. Brickman。フラット・ピックで弾いているのがC. White。例）Farewell Bluesでは、最初のリードがクラレンス。2番目がブリックマン。
Eight More Miles To Louisvilleのクラレンスのリードが大胆で素敵！

映画から来た方は1曲だけを目的にしていると思うが、それに関してはGood。
ただし他の曲すべて同じ調子なので、ブルーグラス好きの私にとってもかなり飽きる内容なのは否めない。
この値段だから1曲のため買うのも悪くはないだろう。

Amongst banjo enthusiasts, this album is often listened to so much that it requires a break. Most banjo lovers I know that own this album skip the first track and let the other 30 short minutes fly by with joy. (most banjo enthusiasts have heard the song "dueling banjos" more times than the national anthem.) I have heard this album perhaps thousands of times...literally. Eric is an unusual, dead on precise, schooled banjo player from New York, like Bela Fleck. In the annuals of music history, this album is brilliant, well paced, exciting, and just plain fun. It was never meant to be a successful seller and was written as simple soundtrack. What emerged was an odd, immersive, and brilliant (but somewhat short) complete album that is far better and more successful than the movie itself. This is a timeless album that is a must have.... If you've never heard it. You will recognize most songs, and all are well paced, although only 2 or so minutes each. For those who have not heard track 1.... Well amongst all the remakes, you may find yourself loving track one to the point you overplay it. This album is 100% instrumental, and is 100% fun to listen to.
I'm not sure who engineered this album in it's final stage but it was done masterfully with guitar, banjo, and acoustic bass balanced to perfection. .... Maybe a happy recording session, but one of the best and historically interesting bluegrass albums ever recorded.

Eric Weissberg ist ein begnadeter Banjo-Spieler. Hört man sich den Song "Dueling banjos" vom Soundtrack des amerikanischen Survival-Thrillers "Deliverance" an, wird einem vom aberwitzigen Tempo des Saitenkünstlers schier schwindelig. Was Weissberg hier zusammen mit Steve Mandell zeigt, ist ganz große Instrumental-Performance. Die anderen siebzehn Songs auf der CD entstammen alle dem Album "New Dimensions in Banjo and Bluegrass" von 1963. Aber das kann man nur dem Inneren des der Scheibe beigefügten Faltblatts entnehmen. Dies nur nebenbei. Auf den siebzehn instrumentalen Bluegrass-Titeln von "New Dimensions ..." wird Weissberg von Geiger/Mandolinenspieler Marshall Brickman begleitet. Auch das spätere Byrds-Mitglied Clarence White soll auf der Gitarre mitmischen. Nähere Angaben zur Besetzung sucht man vergeblich. Die Musiker ergänzen sich jedenfalls auf beeindruckende Art und Weise. Neben "Dueling banjos" ragen zwei Songs aus der Tracklist heraus. Hier ist zunächst der überaus rasante Bluegrass-Feger "Shuckin' the corn" zu nennen. Die Mandoline verleiht der Nummer zusätzliche Klangfarbe. Der zweite Top-Titel ist der leider nur 1:32 Minuten lange Jazz-Standard "Bugle call rag". Weissberg und Brickman schaffen es tatsächlich, in den Titel ein Bass-Solo einzubauen. Wer den Viersaiter bedient bleibt unbekannt. Ganz nett ist auch der Train-Song "Reuben's Train". Die Musiker imitieren darauf lautmalerisch einen Zug. "Bufallo Gals" überzeugt mit einer sehr eingängigen Melodie und schönen Geigen-Passagen. Auf "Old Joe Clark" präsentiert Weissberg nochmals in Vollendung sein Speed-Spiel auf dem Banjo. Überhaupt scheinen die Instrumentalisten Geschwindigkeits-Freaks zu sein. Der Großteil der Songs geht ab wie die Feuerwehr. Getragene Nummern sind die Ausnahme. Dadurch aber besteht die Gefahr, dass man sich recht schnell satt hört, zumal es keinen Gesang gibt. Gleichwohl ein Album, das nicht nur Banjo- und Bluegrass-Fans zusagen könnte.

My Dad made a sign to tell people headed down river the mileage to the next stops. He plays this cd when he sees someone coming. To be in his late 60's this man is a teenager at heart. Everyone laughs their heads off hearing it. They even take videos of the sign while the music plays.

Die Verpackung selbst war unbeschädigt. Leider weist CD-Huelle mehrere kleine Risse auf.
Die CD funktioniert einwandfrei.
Aufgrund der Risse in der Hülle gibt es einen Punktabzug.
