本アルバムは1976年にリリースされた、6作品目のソロ・スタジオ・アルバムである(73年の『
Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye
やはり本アルバムは彼女のNo.1ヒットの「Theme from Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're Going To)」をフィーチャーするだけに、翌年リリースの『
ベイビー・イッツ・ミー
』がやや地味な印象となってしまう。周知のように右ナンバーは1975年の映画『
Mahogany [VHS] [Import
]』のテーマ・ソングで、彼女自身が主演のサクセス・ストーリーである。ダンス・ポップテイストの「Love Hangover」は同年にシングル・カットされ、ヒット・ナンバーとなっている。全体的にR&Bのスローなブルースの印象があるが、「I Thought It Took a Little Time (But Today I Fell in Love)」など「Theme from Mahogany…」の流れを汲むバラード・テイストでこれに続くベスト・ナンバーの1つだろう。

'Good CD By Miss Diana Ross!'
2023年10月7日にカナダでレビュー済みAmazonで購入
The CD is nice with nice songs by Miss Diana Ross; 'Theme From Mahogany (Do You Know Where You're
Going To)' is a nice song that never gets old; 'I Thought It Took A Little Time (But Today I Fell In Love)' is another nice song with nice vocals by Diana and her background singers; 'Love Hangover' is the extended version and it was nice (good song to dance to); 'Kiss Me Now' is 'okay'; same with 'You're Good My Child'; 'One Love In My Lifetime' is a song I actually liked with good vocals by Diana and her background singers; 'After You' is also 'okay' as well as 'Smile' (it's a song that never gets old); the bonus tracks are 'okay'; 'Sorry Doesn't Always Make It Right'; 'Together'; 'I Thought It Took A Little Time (But Today I Fell In Love)'; 'Love Hangover'; 'One Love In My Lifetime' are Single Versions; 'To Love Again'; 'We're Always Saying Goodbye'; 'This Christmas' are Alternate Versions; 'Coming Home' is a nice song. All the songs on Disc 2 are the same songs and they are Alternate Versions except 'Harmony'; 'Le Lo Li'; 'Go Where Your Mind Is' are nice yet good songs; 'Diana Ross Interview' is 'okay' and Diana shouldn't have discussed her weight! It's none of the interviewer's or her family and fans' business! Diana talked about her days as a
Supreme and her relationship with her group members Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, Betty McGlown and Barbara Martin and how the girls were competing to become the lead singer of The Supremes. Overall, Miss Ross seemed confident and relaxed during the interview. REST IN POWER to Ms. Florence Glenda Ballard (June 30, 1943-February 22, 1976); Ms. Mary Wilson (March 6, 1944-February 8, 2021); Ms. Barbara Martin (June 16, 1943-2009): 'Beautiful ladies: You all may be gone but you will never, ever be, forgotten.'

First of all, this particular Diana Ross album is the one I've been waiting for in the continuing and beyond excellent series of expanded re-issues overseen by Andrew and Harry and issued by Hip-O Select. The bar has been raised higher for all future expanded cd reissues with the meticulous research into every detail and quality of excellence in sound and packaging that Hip-O Select provides consumers with, every time out. CD collecting made fun, again.
For me, THIS 'Diana Ross 1976' album was about her best- ever, though the expanded 'Surrender' (buy it!) and expanded 'Diana Ross' 70 (buy it!) were great. 'Diana Ross 1976' belongs in the home of every fan of Diana Ross. This cd is housed in a gorgeous looking fold out digipack. The alternate takes are interesting to hear, and usually are quite excellent and show that Diana Ross really wasn't capable of a 'bad take' in the studio. She'd try a few approaches, get her phrasing and 'timing' perfect, and usually, Motown made very good choices in which 'take' was used on an album, but she always delivered. That's Diana Ross to me, and that's Andrew and Harry in the work they do. They preserve her legacy with each of their releases- Andrew and Harry always deliver and I gladly buy every product they work on, and I am never disappointed.
The 2 men are so overdue for Grammy wins for 'best reissue', 'best liner notes' 'best historical reissue'-- for their spot on excellence and great attention to detail. Every cd Andrew and Harry put their brainpower and heart into is a must-have and fans will never be sorry for the purchases.
This time out, on 'Diana Ross 1976' the track that especially stands out for me is an alternate version of 'To Love Again', used for a later album. For the first time, we hear the song with a beautiful French spoken introduction by Diana that totally transforms the song, already gorgeous to begin with, into an multi-national ode of lost love, a reserve for hope 'to love again,' and the song also concludes with her perfect, lovely spoken French words. I don't know what she's saying, i'd need a translator, but it is gorgeous. I also appreciate the alternate takes of 'I Thought It Took A Little Time' and the single mixes of the songs as they were heard on radio. The booklet is stunning, filled with informative session notations and a very good overview of where Diana was at that particular moment in time-which is the style Andrew and Harry choose for every release. NICE photos, and just a beautifully presented package.
Oh- the price is a bargain! Let's not be cheap, wink. It's DIANA ROSS, brought to you by the 2 biggest champions of her recording career and talent. Buy it, and buy an extra. The expanded 40th anniversary release of 'Where Did Our Love Go' is now selling for hundreds of dollars, when it can be found, since it has been out of print for some time, and some kvetched about the original $40 price-tag. I don't need to make money on eBay when things go out of print, but if you must, think of it as an investment. The expanded 'Last Time I Saw Him' release with a full cd of unreleased material sold out within a year.
This 'Diana Ross 1976' release, and all of the releases, are the most thorough and beautiful tributes to the incomparable skill of Diana Ross as a recording artist that could be asked for. "Someday''- everyone will get it. The Hip-O releases are so intricate in the way her talent as a world class recording artist is presented, people may 'get it' sooner than later. Andrew and Harry and Hip-O definitely DO give her the due credit and provide a beautiful listening experience for her fans, uncover lost treasures, and make it all gorgeous to look at. Can't wait for whatever comes next- maybe 'Baby It's Me' and 'Ross' together and charge whatever they want for it!
If possible, it would be awesome if Hip-O Select would offer for sale limited lithograph prints or posters of 'Surrender', 'Let The Music Play:DRATS'- loved that cover photo a lot, the current 'Diana Ross 76,' 'Last Time I Saw Him'. I notice the Hip-O website has prints or books on some of the artists, but no Diana or Supremes- but thankfully, we have these magnificent releases. A must-have for any Diana Ross fan or for those interested in one of Motown's best selling albums of the 1970s.

An Album so Elegant even the Album art is Celebrated!

When I walked into The Gramophone in San Francisco that February 1976, I was instantly mesmerized by the cover. I couldn't believe it was her. Motown must have kept the art under wraps before astounding the world with its beauty. "Theme from "Mahogany" was in its 5th month on the charts after hitting #1 for two weeks. Motown then released the gorgeous, possibly even stronger "I Thought it Took a Little Time" Michael Masser ballad.(The picture sleeve 7 inch premiered the gorgeous photo album art). It began its leaps and bounds up the Hot 100 when Motown got word that the 5th Deminsion was releasing a competing version of the money-cut, "Love Hangover". This caused a shift in gears. Motown readied "Love Hangover" for it's domestic release. They didn't completely abandon "I Thought it Took a Little Time". They guided that beautiful song to the Top 5 Adult Contemporary Billboard charts."The Black Album" how it came to be known by Diana fans, was one of the most striking album covers ever released. (It eventually won "The Most Beautiful Album Cover" by the Italian fan club ). "Love Hangover" captured the essence of Victor Skrebeneski back cover art. Hot! Hot! Hot! But back to the fate of one of my favorite songs. A mere 4 years later, Diana would be one of the first artists since The Beatles to place 2 or 3 singles in the Top 10 at the same time. In fact, "The Black Album" would be a landmark by being one of the rare albums to have 4 hit singles. (Diana had achieved that goal as early as "Where Did Our Love Go" with The Supremes). Had Motown kept the fate, I still believe that "I Thought it Took a Little Time" would have been a bigger pop hit.
Diana was also riding high with her critical and commercial smash "An Evening with Diana Ross" tour. It gave "Love Hangover" a special showcase in the show where Diana would invite the audience on stage to dance invoking a big disco party. The success of the tour dictated that another single be released in the form of a remixed "One Love in My Lifetime". While it was another Top 25 hit, I thought her version of "Smile" had single potential.
The first side of the album was the strongest. Side 2 featured another Diana produced track in her cover of Rufus' "Ain't Nothing But a Maybe". Both the charming "Kiss Me Now" and "You're Good My Child" had that tin pan alley feel to them.....cute and novel. "The Black Album" would have been greater had the last 4-5 songs were as daring as the first 4-5 songs like the revolutionary, "Love Hangover". The last half was a little too safe. However, the album still was a multi-million seller and a Grammy nominated affair.
To this day, the album art remains iconic, "Theme from "Mahogany" is heard the world over and "Love Hangover" raised the bar in the world of grand diva dance records! RATED: 4 stars out of 5. But due to its 40th Anniversary that underscores it's still relevant, it upgrades to 5 stars.
However, this Expanded Edition is a tad disappointing. There are no less than 3 alternate versions of most of the songson the original album. In my initial listenings, not one of the mixes stood out enough that I did not feel compelled to repeat any of them. Of the new tracks, her take on Elton John's "Harmony" is the most endearing. "Harmony" is the final song on Elton's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" album, an album that became the dividing point in my love of Elton's music. "Le Lo LI" is a fun, rhythmic pop track that she sounds delightful in. The Sly Stone produced "Go Where Your Mind Is" is different. The music track and chorus are the most memorable. But you would be hard press to identify it as a Sly Stone song upon initial listening. The closing interview is a great time capsule. So this Expanded Edition isn't as rich with unfounded material as the previous releases.

Diana Delivers the Sunshine, Dance and Joyful Voice To Us

Diana Ross's
Diana Ross 1976: Special Edition
CD has so many great songs I don't know where to begin but several songs that amazed her fans and myself include:
Theme from Mahogany
I Thought it Took a Little Time
One Love In My Lifetime
Sorry Doesn't Always Make it Right
So many more but Love Hangover took over the dance floor and shook the NYC clubs like the Paradise Garage, Xenon, Crisco Disco and every club that played disco. I am so thrilled to see this remastered release with so many flawless songs and alternate versions.
Of course Smile was also a great hit recorded by many singers such as Diana's co-star of The Wiz (30th Anniversary Edition w/ Bonus CD) legendary Michael Jackson.
I have been a fan of Diana Ross since the days of the Supremes. When the Supremes broke up and sang their 12th #1 single "Someday We'll Be Together," on TV. Not only my whole family was crying but I think half of America was too. You can find that song everywhere but it is lovely on The Best of Diana Ross & The Supremes: 20th Century Masters (Millennium Collection)
I was given a Birthday gift for my 18th Birthday which were tickets to see Evening With Diana Ross also on CD Evening With at the Palace Theater for which she won a Tony Award. I was spellbound as she opened her show with a spotlight on her face singing, "Do You Know We're You're Going To," and as the light expanded on her white gown that was spread open as she raised her arms her gown became a movie screen. Then Mahogany was projected onto Diana's gown and we watched clips from the movie as she sang above the screen which had become her.
Years later I had seen Diana going into Madame Romaine's on East 61st Street in NYC where she loved to dine. I was working across the street in La Pomme so she waved at all of us waiting tables and looking out the window waving to her. Soon after, as her Concert in Central Park was rained out, the crowds poured out of Central Park and many tried to cram into the doorway of La Pomme for shelter from the rain. I could go on like the time my partner, I, our 10 siblings and friends saw Diana on Long Island at the Bald Hill Ski Bowl where she played for the love of the crowd to promote Long Island's plan to bring big stars to the amphitheater. She offered one price $10 seats that were sold out in an hour. She came into the audience touching every person she could till the security asked her to go back on stage.
For any Diana fan or to anyone who wants to hear an array of songs from dance to ballads plus an interview of almost 16 minutes long where Diana answers questions in a most relaxed and honest voice; this special edition with the beautifully designed 24 page booklet is a treasure for me since I loved the original Album Cover that my siblings and I would place over our faces to become Diana..
Right now I am enjoying Diana's three never-before-heard performances:
Go Where Your Mind Is: delights the ear with the innocence of Diana's stage performances; this is a song that invites her audience to have fun and sing along as many fans do when Diana sings Reach Out And Touch (Somebody's Hand) .
Harmony: where Diana pitches us a lovely uplifting melody which I'm sure Sir Elton John is delighted with.
Le Lo Li: another happy, danceable song in the vein It's My House which you can find on The Boss .
For those who find the price of the CD a bit much I'd suggest getting the download version Diana Ross (Expanded Edition) for only $13.99 on Amazon. Enjoy and be happy!

A Definite Must for Diana Fans

This album represents one of her biggest peaks in her amazing career. She was riding high on the success of
Mahogany
and had 3 strong singles from this one album. The cover alone was brilliant--a defining moment in the birth of her true DIVA status...which continued with the covers of
Baby It's Me
,
The Boss
and
Diana (Deluxe Edition)
.
This album (the vinyl record) had always been one of my favorites, and for several years was unavailable on CD (Motown was really bad about releasing her 70s music on CD in the 90s...I had to hunt for everything at used CD shops before the internet made shopping easier.) Thank you Hip-oSelect for re-issuing all her CDs as expanded editions with lots of extras. Nearly every Diana song is now available on CD except for one of her most beautiful ballads from Ross (1978) : Where Did We Go Wrong. All the other songs from that album have been added as extras in other CDs.
Why should you buy 1976 Diana Ross? If you were a fan of the original, you will like hearing the alternative versions. Another reviewer said, "there is a reason they weren't ever released," which I understand. However, although I prefer the versions I am already familiar with, it's FUN to listen to outtakes, and hear some of the other choices she made when discovering the songs. Do you know how many countless bootlegs of Beatles Albums there are out there? Countless! And fans buy them for the exact same reason: to hear the decisions that the band was making for each song, different riffs, different harmonies, maybe even a little laughter.
But the most fantastic track on this 2 disc set for me is the interview with Diana from 1975/6, who sounds the most eloquent I have ever heard. She sounds relaxed and smart and in love with life. I am a huge fan but the first to admit that sometimes she doesn't interview well--because she might misinterpret the question or not connect with the interviewer (but her last appearance on Oprah in 2011 was probably my all time favorite interview with Diana that I've seen!) On this CD she talks about the birth of the Supremes, about working on her movies, about the tracks on this CD, and she exudes confidence and joy being exactly where she is in her life.
So for Diana novice who wants to hear her 70s hits, buy To Love Again for ballads, or All The Great Hits . But for the people who are fans and liked Touch Me In The Morning [Expanded Edition ] or Last Time I Saw Him (Expanded Edition) , definitely get this. If you liked the original 1976 release and want to dig deeper, get this before it goes out of print. It already happened with Where Did Our Love Go (another Hip-oSelect special). If I had to choose my top 20 Diana Ross songs, 6 would come from this album alone: After You, Ain't Nothin' But a Maybe, Theme from Mahogany, I Thought it Took a Little Time, Love Hangover, AND One Love In My Lifetime. SO MUCH GREAT STUFF HERE!
