著者について
BRIGID GEORGE grew up in a small Australian town called Orbost in the state of Victoria. She spent her childhood chasing snakes and lizards down hollow logs, playing Hansel and Gretel in the bush with her brothers, climbing trees, searching the local rubbish tip for books to read and generally behaving like a feral child. To avoid her boisterous brothers she often escaped into the hayshed with a book. Hours and hours of reading from an early age trained her for life as a writer. In primary school her teachers called her 'the one with the Enid Blyton touch'. Her love of reading murder mysteries as an adult has now evolved into a love of writing them. As a teenager she had short stories published in one of Australia's national magazines, New Idea. Since then she has won several awards for her stories which have also been published in anthologies. Brigid still lives in the state of Victoria but is now in the capital city of Melbourne where her life is fertile with friends.

Good detective story

I enjoyed this book. A different type of detective story. Instead of a cop solving crimes you have an investigative journalist who makes her living solving cold cases. She then writes a best selling book about the crime. I've never read any other books by this author but I will do now.

Famous author Marcia Hamilton has been killed on her daily walk, struck on the back of the head and rolled into a gully. Her grief stricken family want answers, but the police are having trouble finding evidence against their main suspect. Enter investigative journalist turned author Dusty Kent and her trusty sidekick Sean O'Kelly.
Dusty thinks the police have it all wrong, she thinks the killer is a member of the victim's family, but which one? They all seem to have something to hide. So Dusty goes about investigating in her inimitable way, unearthing secrets, with Sean's help, and getting to the heart of the mystery as only Dusty can do.
A Devious Mind is a good quick read, I easily read it in a day. It's set in Byron Bay, and knowing the area and it's environs well I could easily picture the action in my head. Realistic characters, a wonderful setting, and a confounding mystery all add up to a satisfying novel. I'm becoming very fond of Dusty and Sean. Recommended to all mystery lovers.

The third of the Dusty Kent books I have read. Love the thinking behind the suspects. Love the passion to achieve justice. Love the secondary story of the developing friendship between Sean and Dusty. Looking forward to book 4.

Kind of boring.

As I was reading I often felt the same as if I were watching the clothes in the dryer spinning around and around because that's what kept going on in the story. Dusty and her Irish sidekick just kept circling around and around the same few suspects rehashing and rehashing the same information. The author also overused one of what I call cheap author's' tricks. During every interview or conversation she would cause an interruption just before someone was about to say something important. It could be fairly brief such as stopping to take a swallow of their drink, or a bit longer as in getting up and going across the room or into the kitchen to fix drinks (or later in the conversation to refresh drinks), or it might be an interruption lasting several hours or overnight. It was overdone and annoying. And the murderer? It couldn't have been simpler to figure out. All you had to do was pick out the one person who had the least amount of suspicion directed towards them. Her sidekick is supposed to be some kind of computer expert, but she never portrays him digging and searching. It's comes across more as if he plucked the information magically out of thin air.

Nothing special, often tedious.

I usually enjoy a story with some surprising twists at the end, but this story didn't wind up seeming well crafted and clever. It just seemed tricky and deceitful. I didn't care for Dusty Kent or her Irish sidekick who narrates the story. They discuss the same things over and over again, never getting anywhere, and they waste a lot of time just sitting or running around when they're supposed to be solving this big murder mystery. They both act kind of immature at times for grown adults. The first time I encountered "Jaysis!", I remembered other reviewers' negative comments, and after several repeats of the word, I didn't care for it either. There were some typos and other errors. I kept reading to find out who the killer was, but it was not a satisfying conclusion like you get at the end of a really good mystery. I didn't enjoy this book at all and do not recommend it.
