I could have used a lot more Wallman, and a lot less Gasp. As it stands, Delusions of Brandeur is a mildly diverting slice of whimsy let down by design and execution.
What's good about it? Wallman dislikes the bollocks and jargon plaguing modern marketing. If you dislike the bollocks and jargon plaguing modern marketing, then you'll probably like Wallman's skewering of the relevant offenders.
His articles, asides, fake briefs, and a variety of visuals are all laced with a sardonic wit that I sucked in with much head-nodding and grinning.
What's bad about it?: The font choices are jarring, and text often disappears into the crease, rendering it unreadable. There isn't enough Wallman for my liking, and I breezed through this in about an hour. I get it isn't a traditional book, and the visuals are part of the experience, but still. I shouldn't be reading a £10 in an hour.

Deightfully snarky, but not worth the tenner I paid.

Yes, it's one of THOSE books.

Ryan and Giles have created a book that is an instant classic. Up there with Arden and Trott. It's exactly the sort of book that I adore - searing, funny, useful and beautiful. On a flight, train journey - idly staring out the window at work - this is the book you have with you. Finish it, put it in your drawer, then get it out again, then leave it on a colleagues desk, send them the Amazon link - it's that kind of book.
There are parts of the writing that verge on Douglas Adams, the joy of using words to bring an instant, involuntary guffaw no matter where you are. Like Meaning of Liff, its funny cos its all true.
If you are lucky enough to have a complete non-job in marketing, creative, copy writing, then Delusions is your new bible.

Funny? Yes. Infuriating? Also yes. Worth reading? Hell yes!

I've long known Ryan Wallman to be the funniest marketer on Twitter, so when he said he was writing a book, I got a little overexcited. As soon as his book came out, I bought it – and I was not disappointed. True to his nature as a doctor, Ryan takes a scalpel, a microscope, and a beakerful of vinegar and applies them judiciously to modern marketing. His book is hilarious and instructive (although it'll probably whoosh over the heads of those who need to read it most). It made me laugh and want to facepalm the entire industry in equal measure. And on top of all that, it's a beautifully designed book, too. Top marks, Dr Draper. Well played.

A razor sharp look at the world of marketing, brand and advertising

I love this book. In a world awash with marketing tomes that promise fresh thinking and wry observations, Delusions of Brandeur actually delivers.
It’s essentially a collection of writing from the hugely respected Copywriter and Creative Director Ryan Wallman, painstakingly curated here, with beautiful design and layout by Gasp (a star in the creative design a Universe). The result is a mix of razor sharp observation, thinking and longer form opinion pieces that spans across every marketing discipline.
It’s hilarious, insightful and above all fascinating, holding a mirror up to the marketing and advertising industry, interrogating what it means to be a marketeer - and what it takes to be great - as the new decade dawns.
This is essential reading if you’re a marketeer. It’s essential reading if you’re not and simply love sharp humour and observation.

The Hippocratic Oath doesn't have a clause about physicians needing to hold the purveyors of marketing twaddle in high esteem. Which is just as well. Otherwise the good Dr Wallman – perhaps equally well-known to many of us by his Twitter pseudonym @Dr_Draper – would've been struck off (as well as being non-practising) long ago. Using humour, wisdom and palpable glee, Wallman administers well-deserved blows to the soft anatomical parts of anyone with a 400-gallon drum of snake oil to shift. Incidentally, the peculiar sound you’ll hear as you read Delusions of Brandeur will be your own cackling. It’s really rather disconcerting.
