Created by legendary comics creator Jack Kirby, The New Gods are a group of immortal "gods" from the "Fourth World", which consists of the two warring planets New Genesis and Apokolips. The leader of Apokolips is one of DC Comics most feared villains, Darksied. As the New Gods begin to mysteriously die, Superman and New Gods Mister Miracle and Orion struggle to discover who is eliminating the New Gods and what is Darkseid's role. DEATH OF THE NEWS GODS is a major part of DC Comics' weekly event comic "Countdown".
Jim Starlin is a comics icon, responsible for many of the greatest Batman stories ever told, including the death of Robin! He is also an acknowledged master of 'cosmic' comics, with work including Cosmic Odyssey and Marvel's epic Infinity Gauntlet saga. --このテキストは、ペーパーバック版に関連付けられています。
This was a great book. The art was beautiful and crisp and had all of Starlin's signature touches. The story was well written and engrossing most of the time. As others have said before, ending Kirby's Fourth World and keeping long-time fans happy while still creating something appealing to new readers is an impossible task. Despite this, I think Starlin does a near perfect job.
The strongest point of this book is that Starlin manages to give all of the primary New Gods their moment in an effectual way that moves the story. Old fans can appreciate that Starlin did his research, cares about these characters, and is paying tribute to a man he obviously admires. New readers can enjoy this tale without prior knowledge of the New Gods as it is not confusing at all, even though there are so many characters involved.
The only thing keeping me from giving this book 5 stars is that I feel there were a few missed opportunities. Starlin is known for his melodrama and Shakespearean type stories, which served this book well, but there was very little actual fighting. That's right, not much fighting even though two worlds that have been at war for eons are now slowly being destroyed... and they DO suspect each other. There should have been a scene where citizens of Apokolips and New Genesis are locked in combat signifying the Armageddon that mirrors the fall of the Old Gods (Starlin even showed us the scene of the death of the Old Gods who were locked in combat in a fiery inferno). Starlin could have also made the battle of Scott Free, Superman, and Orion versus the forces of Apokolips a little more interesting. I know that Starlin wanted to move the story along and just have the heroes confront Darkseid but what would an Apokolips free of Darkseid's tyrannical control look like?
Lastly, and most importantly, Starlin could have done a better job showing Scott Free and Big Barda together. It would have been nice if one page was dedicated to flashbacks of special moments they shared together that signify how much these two really love each other. This would have made the reader invest a little bit more in the character before she was killed off. I wouldn't have felt Big Barda's loss that much if I didn't already know the character and I feel that new readers won't care that much about her death either.
Overall, still a great read and it looks beautiful. Starlin, Kirby would be proud!
