Wade Wilson is a self-loathing killer for hire...but he dreams of being a hero. So when an interdimensional organization reveals that his destiny is to save the world, is it the chance for redemption Deadpool has longed for - or is it too good to be true? Either way, with reluctant allies like Siryn, Monty, Weasel and the elderly prisoner Blind Al, and formidable foes like Taskmaster, Typhoid Mary and T-Ray - who carries a soul-shattering secret that could destroy Deadpool - the odds are stacked against the merc with a mouth! Joe Kelly's hilarious, brutal, twisted and definitive take on Deadpool is collected in one oversized hardcover! You will travel back in time with Sirin, Blind Al, Weazel, Wolverine, the Task Master, The Hulk, Dare Devil, Captain America, Monty (he is awesome! just loved the casino scene with Deadpool as "Ricardo Montalban") T-Ray, Spider Man, Bullseye and a bunch more of infamous characters. If you are a fan of Joe Kelly and Deadpool's "un-shutapable" (I know that's not a word...) humor, get this Omnibus, it is just plain awesome.
What you get: Deadpool (1997) # 1-33, # - and #0; Daredevil/Deadpool Annual '97; Deadpool & Dead Annual '98; Baby's First Deadpool Book; Amazing Spider - Man (1963) # 47 and #611; and material from Deadpool (2008) 3 900 and more than 1000 pages of fun.
Unless you have read Joe Kelly's character-defining run, you do not KNOW Deadpool.
That is the #1 appeal of this collection. It is the overall least-expensive, easiest way to get what is seen by many as the single greatest Deadpool run in the character's history.
As a reprint collection goes, the colors looks great compared to the original issue. It fully stands up to the level of quality expected from a Marvel Omnibus. The biggest disappointment is the lack of ALL-NEW supplemental content, but there's plenty of classic cover sketches and character designs and breakdowns and various Joe Kelly interviews from back in the day to fill out the book.
After you pcik this up, do not forget to pick up the Deadpool & Cable Omnibus!
Kelly's writing is unique. He is quite wordy--there are sequences in which the word balloons essentially cover the entire page. The stories are also complex, almost to the point of unnecessarily complex, which may have been Kelly's using the series, which he believed was doomed for cancellation, to have fun and be extremely satirical. Still, it would be irresponsible for one to follow Deadpool without reading this volume. The art is great.
