Hiromi Kanda has a beautiful and powerful voice. She has the timeless style class and panache to sing the classic jazz songs with grace. What can I say?--- I enjoy good music. I have been following her for a while now and I am not disappointed. She has the ability and the range to sing songs that we have not been sung as well since Frank Sinatra was alive and performing.
I saw her perform at the Lewers Lounge, in the Halekulani Hotel just short of Waikiki Beach. It is a small venue that reminded me of the different performances I saw in small concert halls in Germany and Austria when I studied there. Lewers Lounge is quiet small and the sound was incredible. There was a film crew there obviously taking video- it just went with how professional the performance was to begin with. I really look forward to hearing her play again in a live show and will definitely attend.
She is in the same depth and breath as Frank Sinatra's league of Rat Pack- even though she is a woman- I bet she could hold her own singing with them if they were still performing.
Days of Yesterday by Hiromi Kanda was backed by a 50 piece orchestra bringing a level of sophistication that is unheard of in the modern era of digital recordings. The album has a timeless beauty not usually seen or heard by modern audiences- it is truly JAZZ that it is felt heart and soul throughout. Part of this album is thanks to the bold recording produced at Capital Studios. She is Blessed with a solid voice and an impressive sense of time, Hiromi sings in a style that suggests the smokiness of Marlene Dietrich with the lilt of Astrud Gilberto.
Days of Yesterday- A truly sultry original could end a perfect romantic evening in the 1940s or today in a late night bar right after the bartender says `Last Call' to everyone and there is just one last perfect song left to be heard which would be "Days of Yesterday" before gently kissing the most beautiful date one could ever have and holding each other in a warm embrace as the song Days of Yesterday continues to play.... This piece perfectly fits into the Big Band era, a compliment to the Great American Songbook era music. It is a deep evocation of emotions filled with deep vocals brilliantly presented.
It Had To Be You- is reminiscent of how well Frank Sinatra sang, Hiromi pays tribute to his great artistry. With Jazz as the great background, the glamorous sultry vocals remind you of days gone by.
All Of Me- is a romantic song that has full brass and horn sections of the orchestra which compliment the time and rhythm of strong vocals wrapping around your soul and heart.
Memories of You- is a slow composed tempo that reflects the depths of emotion.
I'm Through With Love - shows off overly passionate and alluring vocals that Hiromi sings beautifully.
Stella by Starlight- Hiromi sings with piercing sadness but the emotions of the song still holds the beauty of her voice.
Twilight Tears- is like lost love and heartache all rolled into a song that could fill the void in a person's heart.
Our Love Is Here To Stay- will make you long to linger on the big band dance floor, tap your feet, and feel like swinging out into merry dance. Our Love Is Here To Stay is a great song to remember how Jazz used to be and still can be with the beautiful sound of this piece.
You've Made a Dreamer out of Me- This song is an upbeat medley. Before in the olden days- a really good singer to listen to the Jazz band play a totally improvised tune and then just belt out great lyrics like modern day word smiths do, or rap artists do on the street. It is free style but Jazz Free-Style. The song takes a life of its own and Hiromi does a great job of making the audience feel the life of the song.
Smile- is another all around favorite of the era but the lyrics belie the melody; the words of Smile are gracefully sung with deep sadness instead of joy or laughter. This is one of the harder pieces to sing and to carry it off well instead of falling flat- the song really does pull it off and it is a credit to Hiromi that she is able to perform this well on a song this hard to sing.
Night and Day- is a truly romantic classic from the Big Band American Jazz era. It is a heartfelt song that has quite a bit of emotional meaning behind it.
I Love Paris- will fill your mind with joy as you remember the love and gayety in Paris. This song is usually a favorite of people that know the era well- and it is song better than other contemporaries sing I Love Paris.
I highly recommend this song, album and musician Hiromi Kanda. I am so looking forward to more songs by her!
Kanda delivers all the songs she sings with remarkable intimacy. This exceptional vocalist has the natural talent to deliver old love ballads with nuanced phrasing and a beautiful pureness of tone. Her sparkle and low toned sexiness and sassiness result in true musical gems. Magnificent esoteric romance music when the lights are down low. Hiromi is simply sparkle and class!
5つ星のうち5.0An Absolute "Tour de Force" Performance from a Jazz Chanteuse !

This CD recording sadly has not gotten the attention it sorely deserves. Hiromi Kanda is a Jazz Chanteuse to the core. In her native Japan, Asia, and Europe, she is a big nightclub attraction. "Days of Yesterday" is a follow-up CD to her well-received 2001 debut. It's a stunning recording.
This time, Kanda's enunciation and sense of swing are much improved compared to her 2001 debut CD, which still betrayed a Japanese accent in places. Here, you can sense her growing confidence and hear the playfulness with the material in the excellent choice of songs.
Kanda comes across as a beloved Asian mix of Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. Her Ella-like swing is evident on the fast tempo songs and the "Lady Day" influences come thru on the ballads and slow burners. There is even a sexy vixenish Eartha Kitt quality in some of the numbers, but Kanda is wise to never detour from the melody or flow of each song. Her impeccable phrasing and sense of swing even surpass some of her American jazz contemporaries, sad to say. She's THAT good!!
I had to buy two copies of "Days of Yesterday" in case I'm in a generous, good-enough mood to give away the second copy someday as a gift. Then again, I might keep both copies in case I lose one of them (LOL). Kudos to Matt Colinglub, who arranged many of Rosemary Clooney's 1980's and 1990's jazz recordings. Colinglub has done a superb job here arranging these numbers to suit Hiromi's strengths as a vocalist, which are many. Don't let the fact that Hiromi's a Japanese vocalist tackling American standards stop you from buying this stunner of a CD. It will be the most enjoyable 66 minutes of music you've come across in quite some time. And I don't say that easily for recordings that I buy.
"It was a wonderful experience to record with Hiromi," says great Joe Sample. "The choice of material was exceptional and her performances were heartfelt. That adds up to a fantastic day!" This album is brilliantly conceived and executed and highly recommended.
