LP、CD、SACDで3回目のDays of future passedです。

I own it - the SACD disc is everything I hoped for
I have owned this album in various incarnations: As an Import Vinyl LP back in the 70's, as a Mobile Fidelity 24K Gold CD and now this Deluxe SACD version.
Technical Crap: Only Disc 1 is SACD. It's a "hybrid" disc from what I understand - i.e. it also contains a regular 16bit 44.1 Khz "Red book" (garden variety) audio CD on a different layer.
Review on the SACD (Super Audio CD) version (sometimes called DSD):
I played this on my Sony BDP-370 inexpensive Blu-Ray player which happens to also play Super Audio type CDs.
----------------> It sounds effortlessly smooth and wonderful <--------------
----------------> It is everything I hoped for <----------
----------> To me the SACD audio version is worth the 27 - 30 dollar price tag <----------
First thing I notice is it doesn't cut my ears to pieces. It's smooth and detailed without being mushy.
I have heard "Tuesday Afternoon" countless times but with this SACD version I picked out a subtlely picked(played) acoustic guitar pattern in the background. Sort of a light filigreed sonic thing that I had never heard before. I hate the harshness of normal CDs. The only way one normally mitigates the inherent harshness of conventional CDs is to have a mega expensive custom CD player /converter/ amp / speaker system. And - even then - if you happen to have a particularly bad source CD even * that * wont save you. However, this SACD turns that on it's ear. Even my cheapo system sounds good! It's making me want to upgrade my downstairs system because I know there's more in there. Just the same I'm very happy with what I get.
Note: The amp and speakers I tested on are the epitome of "modest". I.e. a 10 year old Pioneer 2 channel (yes) amp with Celestion Ditton 100 speakers. I may move this player upstairs to my better (5.1) system just to hear the full detail.
Note2: The SACD version is "Multi" only - i.e. I did not get a menu option / choice for 2-Channel SACD audio mix. There was only one part on the record where this was an issue - an oboe had a melody on one song and for all of 10 - 15 seconds I'm hearing just the backing. My bad however - it was originally mixed in quarophonic (4 channel sound) and it's not this Deluxe version SACD's fault that I have a 2 channel system in my basement. Anyway - that's a wrinkle. If you have an SACD capable player go for it.
If you're buying this for the regular 2 channel conventional (redbook audio) CD layer - baah.. I think you're kidding yourself. Really. Don't bother. You don't spend this kind of money for that.
This is my first Super Audio CD purchase. I'm impressed. I may buy certain other select SACD's of favorite albums. The status of SACD's in the marketplace: there aren't a ton of them out there. It's sort of a stillborn technology. MP3's took over due to convenience /portability and low cost. Those features won out in the marketplace over sheer sound quality. Too bad.
Perfection is expensive - here it is. If you have an SACD player and you are a serious Moody Blues fan: buy it.
Hope this helps.

I must say that this is the best regular, commercial version of this album.
The 5.1 surround mix was created from the 1970's quad masters, and they alone make the CD worth having, because they're "new" and the music does surround you. The 5.1 mix is also nowhere near as compressed as the rest of the disc. Read on.
The "normal" stereo CD version on this disc, and the stereo SACD version sound good upon first listen, but they're compressed very badly. Unfortunately almost all new "remasters" suffer from this; to make them louder they compress the sound. One of the reasons we fell in love with CD's in the first place was the dynamic range...the difference between the quiet and loud passages. On most new remasters, as crisp and clear as they may sound, they seem to have mastered them with iPods or car stereos in mind. Most of the discs maintain the same level throughout. That's great when listening with cheap earbuds on the train, or above the road noise on your car stereo. But louder isn't always better. On a really good home system these new discs tell a tale.
If you compare this disc to the Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab 24-karat gold (audiophile) version that was released in the late 80's/early 90's, you'll see that it has much more headroom and breathing room in it. And the Mo-Fi version is just as crisp and clean, if not cleaner. These new Moody Blues remasters are a bit more fatiguing to listen to. They're more "in your face all the time" if that makes sense. Almost like FM radio. By direct comparison, these new versions sound aggressively rude.
Don't get me wrong, they beat the heck out of the first couple of versions released by Decca/Polygram/Deram/Threshold. And the extra tracks and the surround mix are enjoyable. I'm glad Justin Hayward took the time to remaster these, but I just wish he'd have stopped before they applied all the compression to them.

Enraptured, captivated, and lost in sound

(This review is for the SACD Deluxe Edition 2006 release of The Moody Blues - Days of Future Passed)
I'm not what you would call a typical Moody Blues fan. I'm not one to love every single thing that any band produces.
Days of Future Passed is not a typical album. There isn't anything on the album that I don't entirely and completely love. And it's been that way from the moment I first heard Nights in White Satin on the radio for the very first time in 1970. (Ah, one of the benefits of having an older sibling) They went out and immediately bought the album and I immersed myself in every sound that emanated from the speakers every time the album was put on.
Fast forward 4 decades and I've collected pieces of high end audio equipment to make nearly anyone jealous. Powerful enough and sensitive enough to reproduce anything on disc you can throw at it and do so without the least bit of harshness or strain. Liquid sound. Smooth. Effortless.
And then I have the pleasure and the honor of putting this masterpiece on and to hear every nuance recorded. To be wrapped in the aural blanket of true musical genius.
The quality of the recording on SACD aside, I would be able to live with even the old 80 gram vinyl if it meant that I could continue to listen to Days of Future Passed any time I wanted to. But if you ever have the chance of hearing this SACD recording on an audiophile quality system, treat yourself. If you're even half the fan that I am of this pinnacle recording you'll be enraptured, captivated, and lost in sound.
The first disc is the original 1967 studio recording that has been stereo remastered & 5.1 surround remixed
The second disc are the alternate versions & out-takes
Breathe deep the gathering gloom
Watch lights fade from every room
Bedsitter people look back and lament
Another days useless energy spent
Impassioned lovers wrestle as one
Lonely man cries for love and has none
New mother picks up and suckles her son
Senior citizens wish they were young
Cold hearted orb that rules the night
Removes colors from our sight
Red is grey and yellow white
But we decide which is right
And which is an illusion

Here's the Info you Need:

If the viciously opposed viewpoints you've read under this product heading have you "on the fence," about whether it's worth 30-odd dollars plunked down, allow me to provide one, carefully considered clarification.
I'm sure you already know this work... probably intimately. I can't imagine you have any want or need for my opinion or analysis of the art, or its creators. But I honestly can't think of a good reason why someone would "invest" in this particular issue of it, IF THEY WEREN'T ABLE TO RETRIEVE THE INFORMATION ENCODED ON THE DISCS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well ok... they can retrieve disc 2. I listened to it once. I doubt if I ever will again. It's fine, but I have always felt bonus tracks were primarly for completists, which if you ARE, of Moodies material, then it will be of value to you. Most of it sounds decent, but none of it sounds as good the SACD.
Ahhhh... the SACD... let me put it this way:
IT'S F-----G TRANSCENDENTAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's as PERFECT as I can possibly imagine a mass-produced transfer of this album that you can own in your home being! Not only is it worth the $30-odd bucks for the set, IT'S ALSO WORTH ANOTHER $500 TO PURCHASE A COMPLETE SACD-capable SURROUND-SOUND SYSTEM AND SPEND TWO DAYS SETTING IT UP AND TWEAKING IT UNTIL IT'S PERFECT BEFORE TREATING YOUR EARS TO THIS INCREDIBLY SUBLIME BLISS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Have I given you a clue? Some people who already wrote reviews without ever HEARING the product, NEED one.
I was not concerned about the "cd layer" of the SACD, and I could never drag myself away from the totally immersing experience of the SACD in order to test it. If you want a "cd" of this title, there are much, MUCH less expensive options on the market, which you probably already own.
A final technical note:
As you know this SACD edition was sourced from a Quadrophonic mix made from the original 4-Track x 2 session masters, by (I think) Hugh Mendl in 1972. They chose to remain somewhat true to that source by NOT creating a fake (digital) center-channel, so the center speaker on a typical home theatre setup remains silent during playback. Had the decision been mine, I would have done the exact same thing. This one's spot - on!!!!!!!

I held off from getting this due to the fact that I own the Mobile Fidelity gold disc version of this album as well as "In Search Of The Lost Chord" and I have a SACD player but it's not set up for 5.1, but I wanted to get the bonus tracks so there you go. As far as the quality of the mastering, yes it is not the original mix and it was a stupid move for not putting it on the disc. It is more compressed in sound than the gold disc version but in the end it is still a classic album and it still sounds great. I do possess a DTS surround sound disc of this album and from that I can only ascertain that the same quad mix was used for the SACD version. But to make a long story short it's mostly various reverbs to create a sense of depth and nothing more.
This was the second Moody Blues album and the first to feature new members Justin Hayward and John Lodge. The band decided to create a musical piece that was different than their previous material, which was more of an R&B sound. When they were asked to do a demonstration record for Decca to show off their new fangled stereo technique called the Deramic Sound System by recording a group and orchestra version of a Dvorak symphony the band decided to record their musical piece they had been working on at live gigs. So with Peter Knight and Hugh Mendi history was made and the Moody Blues were back on the scene with mellotron in tow. This album contains the classics "Tuesday Afternoon" and "Nights In White Satin" (any similarity to Love's "Signed D.C." is purely coincidental) as well as those spoken passages at the beginning and end of the record (oops! I mean CD) that is lampooned on various Mystery Science Theater 3000 episodes, which shows how this album has become a part of the pop culture zeitgeist.
So if you're looking to upgrade from the last re-masters you could do worse like buying a MFSL Gold Disc issue for $200.00 on Ebay.
