A classic film score that changed film scoring for science fiction and horror films, "The Day The Earth Stood Still" remains one of Bernard Herrmann's most memorable scores. La La Land has gone back to the original surviving masters for this release and, while I would love to recommend this as the release to get, there are signicant flaws on this compact disc.
There's considerable distortion whenever a crescendo is reached or during a louder passage of the score. I'm not sure if this is due to the condition of the mono masters or not or the transfer itself. It's disappointing because hearing the score conducted by Herrmann (Alfred Newman conducts some passages as well) would normally make this an essential purchase. It's a pity because I was looking forward to this limited edition release from La La Land.
The booklet is excellent and there are some previously unused cues on this release as well. If you are someone who will be bothered by noticeable distortion due to damage to the masters (if that's the cause), this is not for you. The film score deserves five stars but what we are offered here deserves two.
I did try and contact LA LA Land via email (and phone as well but couldn't get through via that method) to see if there were any plans to reissue this or replace the disc for those who bought. There's currently been no announcement so I would stay away from this despite the excellent booklet.
