'Dress Code' is a departure from Maki's other cds' with a direction towards easy listening and Jazz influences. A brief period of musical madness is presented with guests Crazy Ken Band on the whimsical track Cosmic Night Run. Sadly Bridges is the only song in English, more would have been nice although understandable as the cd is primarily for the Japanese market.
As with everything this pop-diva has done till now, Miss Maki's clear, melodic voice can make any song presented sound incredibly beautiful. A deserved high star rating!
I guess that the common among us would call this "Lounge Music", yawn. Oh dear, it is so tedious to be surrounded by the unhip.
Is the music of Mademoiselle Maki Nomiya good or bad?
"It is absurd to divide people into good and bad. People are either charming or tedious." - Oscar Wilde. Ms Nomiya happens to be one of the charming ones, and oh! how charming she can be!
A friend of mine asked me if this album was recorded at a party. It sounds like it. Yet few of us are ever invited to parties this good.
Lots of lounge piano, flute, groovy acoustic guitar, mellow electric guitar, sexy saxophones and Sergio Mendez styled percussion.
As you have probably heard in the past, and proven once again with this album, the whole (of a band) does not qual the sum of its parts.
Whereas Maki Nomiya was the voice and the face of Pizzicato Five, the composer of most of the music and the hits was Yasuharu Konishi, not Maki.
Often we think that when a lead singer of a successful band records a solo album, that the product would be at least as pleasant as the band's product, and 99% of the time, this is not the case.
It's not even because the lead singer's type of music in the solo album is diffrent from the band's album, it is because, plainly speaking, the songs are not that good.
I bought this CD (over $20 plus shipping) when it first came out, and I was badly disapponted. Maki's voice is as lovely as ever, BUT THE SONGS ARE BAD!! ANY A&R MAN WOULD SAY" I DON'T HEAR A SINGLE!".
Do yourselves a favor: download the MP3, or listen to the music samples here. If the songs grab you, then buy the CD. If not, just leave it alone and spend your money on something else.
As for my copy, I just got rid of it on eBay for $10.50 - a loss, but at least I got some of my money back.
For proof of just how bad this album is, look at the price difference between a brand new copy and a used copy. Also see how many used copies are being dumped back on Amazon by disappointed P5 fans.
