If you actually have an interest in the archaeological sites, this book is not written for you and would be a total disappointment. It has lots of pretty pictures and very little real information. The target audience seems to be the casual tourist who has no particular knowledge of ancient Egypt.
The best book that contains real information remains William Murnane’s The Ancient Egypt Guide, f/k/a The Penguin Guide to Ancient Egypt. It was updated in 2012 by Aidan Dodson.
So what about the more recent information that I was seeking—hotels, restaurants, tickets? Well, a lot of it is already outdated as Egypt changed much of its ticket policies over the last two years. I was surprised that many of the restaurants that are currently popular with folks I know who have been to Egypt recently were not mentioned, nor were many that I have been to and enjoyed over the years (my favorite pizza place, for instance) that I assume or know are still there. That doesn’t mean that the book doesn’t give good restaurant suggestions and hasn’t offered new places to try, just that the information given is very limited.
This Egypt guide did not disappoint. There's background on the country as well as history at the beginning of the book, followed by the area-by-area breakdown, a travelers' needs section, and a survival guide. I know it will come in handy for my upcoming trip!
