With superb photography, illustrations, and maps, this easy-to-use travel guide will lead you straight to the best of Austria.
From the Salzkammergut lakes surrounded by mountains, picturesque Innsbruck, and medieval Hochosterwitz castle, to the stunning imperial palaces in Vienna, and Baroque architecture in Salzburg, this guide will show you all the top sights that this beautiful country has to offer. Learn about Austrian cakes and pastries, Austrian composers, and the country's historic and modern architecture. There are also suggestions for scenic driving routes and walking trails, as well as practical tips for getting around, with reviews of the best restaurants, cafés, and places to stay.
With hundreds of full-color photographs, hand-drawn illustrations, and custom maps that illuminate every page, DK Eyewitness Travel Guide: Austria truly shows you this city as no one else can.
"Known… for its four-color maps, photos and illustrations, the [DK] Eyewitness Guides are extremely user-friendly for travelers who want their information delivered in a concise, visual way." – Chicago Tribune
"The best option… Color photos, maps, and diagrams bring the place to life." – The Philadelphia Inquirer
But the font is TOO SMALL. It's a struggle to read. When I was young enough to read such small print, I couldn't afford to travel.
It has tons of wonderful color photos so that you can get an idea of what you would see at these places which certainly helps when deciding what is important for you to go see and what you can miss.
What I found this guide to be majorly lacking in is practical travel information. There is barely any information on places to stay. Hotels are listed in an entirely separate section from the city guides, and the hotels that they do list are primarily for people who are traveling with a rather significant budget. Same story with places to eat.
There is some practical travel information in the very back of the book, but it was very broad. My Lonely Planet guidebook doesn't have all the detail on museums and palaces that this book has, but it does have plenty of good travel tips and suggestions for each city and town that this Eyewitness guide is lacking
Are you interested in taking a day hike and seeing some of the countryside? You won't find any suggestions here. Are there deals to be had on tickets or passes in a city? They aren't listed in this book
I'm older now and no longer staying in group dorms at a hostel, so I don't begrudge this book for not catering to cheap travelers, but I do want more from a travel guide than "here's a picture and a history lesson"
