At the heart of these stories, as with all the best of Lovecraft' work, is the belief that the Earth was once inhabited by powerful and evil gods, just waiting for the chance to recolonise their planet. Cthulhu is one such god, lurking deep beneath the se

内容紹介

A definitive collection of stories from the unrivaled master of twentieth-century horror in a Penguin Classics Deluxe edition with cover art by Travis Louie

Frequently imitated and widely influential, Howard Philips Lovecraft reinvented the horror genre in the 1920s, discarding ghosts and witches and instead envisioning mankind as a tiny outpost of dwindling sanity in a chaotic and malevolent universe. S. T. Joshi, Lovecraft's preeminent interpreter, presents a selection of the master's fiction, from the early tales of nightmares and madness such as "The Outsider" to the overpowering cosmic terror of "The Call of Cthulhu." More than just a collection of terrifying tales, this volume reveals the development of Lovecraft's mesmerizing narrative style and establishes him as a canonical - and visionary - American writer.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

“Now connect the cord of the lens machine with the upper socket on the cylinder ------ there! Join the tube machine to the lower left-hand socket, and the disc apparatus to the outer socket. Now move all the dial switches on the machines over to the extreme right ----- first the lens one, then the disc one, and then the tube one. That's right. I might as well tell you that this is a human being ----- just like any of us. I'll give you a taste of some of the others tomorrow.”

これは、この短編集に収録された作品から引用したものである。まるでRay Bradbury、Isaac Asimovの作品のようではないだろうか。この作品が書かれたのは、BradburyもAsimovも10歳だった。で

5つ星のうち 5.0 A captivating interpretation brings relevance to these stories for today's listeners 2013/4/22

I read Poe several times in my youth, but never found my way to H.P. Lovecraft. Perhaps ESP told me that this brilliant interpretation read by William Roberts and beautifully produced by Naxos was worth the wait. Mr Roberts' careful preparation and poignant delivery of these four classic, unabridged tales - The Call of Cthulhu, The Hound, The Dunwich Horror and Dagon - made their nearly one hundred year old narratives feel as if they could have been reports from some some current, albeit eccentric academic researcher.

A lesser actor could have made the many superlatives and descriptive adjectives that are so much a part of Lovecraft's style feel trite and gratuitous. But Roberts transmit's Lovecraft's need for every word. He pronounces them with distinctive feeling and color, relaying new information to the listener with each syllable.

To understand Lovecraft one should be aware of the feeling of utter evil that stories from "The Great War" of the deaths in the trenches, poisonous green and yellow gas and other horrors reported ny returning soldiers had on the American psyche. The world did seem to be operating under "a different geometry," as Lovecraft describes more than once in his stories. The seemingly irrational evil that drove the Germans to attack their innocent neighbors might seem to have come from some long dormant, evil god awaiting his chance to take back earth.

These four stories are also a fascinating study in science fiction worldbuilding, and they are all related in unexpected ways.

I highly recommend this recorded book to all who enjoy listening to the classics, science fiction, mysteries and historical fiction. You will probably listen to these stories, then immediately start over again from the beginning!

You can tell that the works of H.P. Lovecraft have entered the stuffy realm of "literature" when Penguin/Viking feels compelled to produce releases of his work under their Penguin Classics banner. The Call of Cthulu and Other Weird Stories is the first of (so far) three volumes of Lovecraft's tales to appear under this imprint, and it serves admirably as both a good introduction for those unfamiliar with his work, or as a good assemblage for those more familiar with him and are seeking a decent, comprehensive collection with annotation.

This collection contains a mixture of tales from both his early and later periods, both long and short works, with several lesser known and harder to find stories thrown in for good measure. Most of the stories directly concerning Cthulu or its followers are here collected ("Dagon", "The Call of Cthulu", "The Shadow Over Innsmouth"), as well as many other tales that have long been considered classics in the Lovecraft corpus ("The Colour Out of Space", "The Whisperer in the Darkness", "Herbert West - Reanimator", "The Rats in the Walls"). What's more, the collection also contains extensive endnotes by editor S.T. Joshi, who not only provides insights into the writing of these works but also explains obscure references and even points out how many of Lovecraft's stories directly relate to one another; even those reasonably familiar with Lovecraft's work will find new insights and connections that they hadn't realized existed.

Overall I think this is a very good collection, among the best Lovecraft anthologies currently in release. I would recommend it to anyone interested in H.P. Lovecraft with absolutely no reservations.

This is an awesome collection of short stories. Lovecraft creates these incredible horror stories that are an amazing blend of psychological and paranormal - and they are really intriguing! His writing is definitely not for everyone, but I really like them and so does my husband. I also really like this particular print edition because I love Penguin Classics - and the modified cover art is awesome! The book has a nice thick paper cover, and the pages have that unfinished, textured edging that is really neat. Definitely a worthwhile purchase.

The concept of H.P Lovecraft's work is that of the early 20th century in America, although some aspects of it are outdated..it''s well more than 100 years old in some references in the short stories. It's a beautiful reminder of what British Victorian or Guilded Age American times were like. I had heard of Lovecraft for countless years before I decided to finally buy the volume and read for myself.

The dialogue is extremely complex, which is why I've heard of some people not being really able to understand the stories because Lovecraft himself was very well educated. It has been argued that the works of his are reserved for people of similar social standing. But if you consider yourself a fan of horror, original horror then it's something to definitely look into.

I was surprised many times at how some of the stories ended up, it's not a typical horror story and how they end. Due to Lovecraft's own experiences in life he had to make his stories very unique in order for people to want to read them and for him to find work in the writing field in the early 20th century.

This is one of the best books I have ever, or will ever buy and read.

The Call of Cthulhu and other Weird Stories edited by S.T. Joshi was a fantastic read. I became familiar with some of Lovecraft’s short stories years ago, but never were they in such a collection as this. I devoured story after story within this edition and it only left me wanting more. I will look into reading his “weird” poetry next.

Also, this collection of short stories is part of Penguin’s Orange Collection which was for the 70th anniversary of Penguin Classics. As you can see from the Amazon picture, the cover is very interesting!
