これは、かつて「おたくの本」を出版してオタクとはどういった連中なのかを世に知らしめた映画評論家の町山智浩と、その子分でアメリカでオタク雑誌「The Otaku」の編集長を務めるパトリック•マシアスによる、海外のオタクの為の東京のオタクスポットガイドである。浅草などの一般的な観光地には目もくれず、初っ端から中野ブロードウェイ、とらのあな、バンダイ博物館など濃い場所をこれでもかと取り上げているのが実に爽快である。中野ブロードウェイの見取り図をフルカラーで4ページも載せてあるガイドブックなど他にあるだろうか、いや、恐らくないだろう。
また、インタビューがガイドブックとしては過剰過ぎないか?と言いたくなるほど充実しており、まんだらけの古川社長、「フィギュア王」編集長、特撮やアニメのプラモ界での超有名コレクター血祭摩利氏等、全員本の目玉になるようなラインアップが揃っている。
これほどまで内容は充実しているにもかかわらず、書かれている英語は平易で読みやすい。ぜひ世界中のオタ必読の書にしてオタスポットで国際交流のネタにしたいものである。

Le recensioni lo indicano come la "bibbia" di Tokyo per gli otaku.
Premetto che Otaku in Giapponese non è una bella parola. Spesso gli Otaku, in giappone, sono degli asociali fissati.
Tralasciando questo se uno si ritiene otaku conosce ciò che è quindi inutile spendere 10 pagine di intro per spiegare ad un otaku le cose da otaku,
Inoltre il libro contiene mappe presenti in qualsiasi stazione della metro giapponese e spiega quali negozi ci sono a nakano Broadway con una mappa... mappa che trovate (aggiornata, tra l'altro) proprio all'ingresso di nakano Broadway.
Qualche accenno di cultura qua e la qualche curiosità ma nient'altro.
E poi la delusione assoluta: la famosissima "guida ai posti degli anime nella realtà" che tanto viene decantata in forum e siti specialistici, è costituita da 2 fogli con su l'elenco dei quartieri di Tokyo e dintorni con sotto scritto: ha ispirato "nome manga" ci si arriva con la metro "B" Capirai che aiuto: se io non ho una fermata della metro b senza una mappa della metro allegata come ci arrivo? La mappa della metro non c'è ma c'è quella del centro commerciale che magari tra un anno chiude e cambia gestione.
Di certo una guida lonely planet o un semplice opuscolo dell'agenzia viaggi hanno al loro interno informazioni più utili.
Se volete una guida alla Tokyo Otaku basta digitare Akihabara o Nakano broadway su Google e troverete molte più informazioni soprattutto aggiornate.

This book is a good read for someone interested in Anime who's planning to visit Japan. Having said that, other than the (now out of date) useful maps of Akihabara and Nakano Broadway, the book is kind of thin in content.

The paper is thick and the font is big, in addition you get lots of whitespace, all in a fairly thin package. Realistically, you would at least expect what's there to be like a proper guide, after all, that is what's advertised, right? Unfortunately, the meat of this book is basically a series of interviews with different people, and this gives you a good feeling for where the whole otaku culture comes from, and the thinking behind it. And admittedly, these are quite interesting. But for a book that tries to sell itself as a guide to Tokyo, it basically fails.

A more appropriate title for the book might have been 'a study of otaku culture in modern day Tokyo', In which case I would have rated the title 4/5. So don't get me wrong, this title does have good content, but it just isn't what the authors claim it to be. If you are interested in otaku culture in general, and like interesting stories from other otakus, then you've found your book!
