KING CRIMSON In The Court Of The Crimson King (1999 UK 30th Anniversary Edition 5-track digitally remastered HDCD issue of their 1969 album with a lyric booklet picture picture sleeve CDVKC1)
Originally issued back in September 1969, In The Court Of The Crimson King heralded the dawn of prog-rock, but is mercifully free of the over-ambition synonymous with the genre. Moonchild's subdued improvisation apart, the tracks skillfully blend song and instrumental elements: quality of music counts as much as musicianship. It's a varied album, too, from the manic jazz-rock of "21st Century Schizoid Man"--which introduced Robert Fripp's angular guitar breaks to the world--and the cool beauty of "I Talk to the Wind" (a shame those harmony vocals weren't retaken), to the grandeur (but not grandiosity) of "Epitaph" and the title track. Uniquely for a first album, playing has the sort of risk-taking normally possible only after years of working together. The new digipak format restores Barry Godber's sleeve design to something like its original impact, which adds to the disc's immortality. --Richard Whitehouse

2009年秋、高音質DVDIn the Court of the Crimson Kingが出てそれも面白い商品である。それに対してこちらは2004年までこの作品の基準の座を守ってきたpink islandレーベルと呼ばれるアナログ盤に代わり初めてオリジナルマスターテープを使用したCDとして2004年登場（それまではLPもCDもバックアップコピーを使用）した商品で、スタンダード、ベーシックなバージョンだ。ITCOTCKは手をかえ品をかえ何度も出されているが迷ってしまったらこの盤がいい。iPodをもっぱら使用する人は2009mixが気持ちいいかもしれないが結局ここに来るのではないか？あくまでもこの音が５人（Fripp, Giles, Macdonald, Lake, Sinfield）のコンセンサスだから。
以前pink island盤とこのCDの音質比較をしたが、よくもここまでオリジナルをCDで再現したものだ。DVDオーディオの再生環境のない人はこれでpink island盤の音を十分楽しめる。
There is something in this album that just speaks greatness. A lot of bands at the time were flirting with blues or coming off of the psychedelic thing. By comparison Robert Fripp and friends' more jazz influenced King Crimson stands out like a sore thumb and this is before that influence became more overbearing than the rock music. Talking of influences, Greg Lake of Emerson Lake & Palmer is all over this album. Not only did he have a hand in producing the record but he also sings and plays bass guitar.
In The Court of the Crimson King features a selection of five extended heavy rock songs, the shortest being six minutes long. The album kicks off with the unforgettable 21st Century Schizoid Man, a song (one of many) that features a particularly strange concept. This song really sets the tone with the haunting vocals, heavy guitars and a monstrous rhythm section. It flows into I Talk To The Wind which is a much less eccentric number that features a bit of flute and a couple of nice solos.
Greg Lake's influence is very noticeable on the classic, Epitaph. It is perhaps the most mesmerising tracks on the album. The slow psychedelic groove is very reminiscent of the early work of Emerson Lake & Palmer, a portion of the song even made its way onto the bands double live album. At a staggering nine minutes long, Epitaph is a song that just sounds wonderful when it is blared from its speakers. It has a charming dystopian feel, one that gets revisited time and again by King Crimson.
The twelve minute Moonchild is somewhat of an acquired taste. The song starts off as a charming ballad, one that gets driven along by a mellotron. This portion of the song is without a doubt one of the bands best in terms of song writing. There is something charming about the whole thing, that is until it crashes head first into a free form instrumental section. This part of the song (at least in my opinion) should of been left out completely. It doesn't ruin it but it does kind of crush an otherwise lovely track. It sounds especially odd considering it immediately jumps into the album title track, In The Court of the Crimson King. This track is a progressive rock classic. It has an awkward groove, some nice use of acoustic guitar, mellotron, harpsichord and flute. The lead vocals sound especially nice and is easily a career highlight of Greg Lake. The song kicks off with a sudden impact and despite the laid back groove, it continues the intensity until the last second. This song is perhaps one of the finest album finishers of its time and one that is very hard to forget.
So where does this album stand for rock fans new and old? Well I would assume this record would be quite popular with an older crowd and would absolutely alienate a younger audience. With that said, In The Court of the Crimson King is an album that is well worth checking out. It has one classic track after another and has aged surprisingly well. My only gripe about the album is the rather feeble snare drum sound but when the playing is as good as this is, who cares.

Embracing the aspirations of dreamy College and University students, displaying with musical notes all that was perhaps naive in those days of Student Unions, rebelling against the establishment, Student marching in protest at the injustices of Society, yet primarily belonging to a cry of help by the middle classes, as they wanted a happier life.
Wow! You'll think right now! Slow down mate! This is only a music album, for Pete's sake!!!
But is it? For a generation music was the Holy Grail of culture, a real way of measuring yourself with your peers, a real font of inspiration and a social get-together for most young people.

Worth owning. Had it when I was 11 when my parents brought in an old record player the length of the room and bought it again 37 years later, when my son brought in one of the new breed of record players.
Buy this, you won't be disappointed.

The real question is how good is the pressing?
You'll be pleased to know the Fripp approved reissue is one of the best and withholds Audiophile integrity. My only gripe is that the disk isnt as meaty or thicc as other 180 gram records- but this is not an issue as the pressing is pretty good.

The sound stage is adequate but not massive. The channel separation is good but the instrument placement is conventional.
Having said that each instrument is clearly audible and distinct. The bass guitar which frequently gets lost in the mix is clearly audible. It is clear that considerable effort was taken with the recording of the drums. The acoustic guitars are clearly audible.
The saxophone does not obscure the other instruments but contributes to the overall sound texture.
Other vocals are clear and defined. The flute has a distinct sound. The cymbals ring clearly. The treble sounds are sharp without being shrill. The bass is tight without booming or being intrusive.
This is a very measured recording which seems restrained but which can suddenly become alive, bursting forth.

The album - in my view this was the absolute best thing to come out of the 60s and you can hear its influence in many places. Is it prog? I don't think it is - it's got a lot more ambition than Yes or Marillion or Genesis - all of whose music I like. In The Court Of The Crimson King has what the others lack - a core of mysticism rarely seen in pop outside of The Royal Family & The Poor, David Sylvian and (very) few others. Even Led Zeppelin as far as I can hear, were only really playing with mysticism. King Crimson caught the moonbeam long before anyone else, and reflected it ten times more strongly.
The 2004 remaster is good - the drums throughout sound totally lush, as does the insane vocal on 21st Century Schizoid man.
All in all, this is about as good as it gets.
Record was dust free, no evidence of warping and plays well.
Stand out tracks including 21st Century Schizoid Man, Epitaph and Court of the Crimson King.
Vast sections of instrumental that are a little underwhelming if I'm honest but breaks up some of the intense moments.
Everyone focus' on Fripp when discussing King Crimson (and rightfully so) but when I first heard the album I honed in on the crazy drumming (Giles) and vocals (Lake) only to find they both left the band after the album!

Now this is how you mark the passage of time. There are many lengthy reviews here at Amazon about this seminal 1969 album which forever changed not only the way that rock music was arranged and performed but also how it was presented. Who can ever forget that album cover? The 40th Anniversary box collects a large piece of musical history together in one convenient location spread out over five cd's and one audio dvd with a mini video artefact. There's every incarnation/mix of this classic album provided to suit the most discerning consumer. I purchased for the new Steven Wilson 5.1 surround mix and it doesn't disappoint. As if I thought it would.
Influential, progressive (inadvertently creating the term prog-rock) and futuristic for its time. On every list of albums you must hear once before you die, In The Court Of The Crimson King is the sound of four musicians and one lyricist reinventing the wheel. Listen, be prepared to be amazed and taken to another plane (astral or metaphysical) and try to remember a world before the Mellotron.

Well, I have just played the first of the two discs of the new (2009) incarnation of this fantastic album!
Disc 1, starts with a brand new 2009 mix & mastering from the then newly discovered FIRST generation Master Tapes.
I have just been blown away!
The new definition and clarity and DEPTH just have to be heard to be believed!
Disc 1 continues after the album proper with interesting alternative mixes of tracks. Disc 2 has the 2004 standard mix of the album (not played that yet)
and other curious, including the original Mono 7" Single, sides A & B of In The Court Of The Crimson King.
This has to be one of my best CD purchases for some time and all that we need now is the soon promised CD Remaster of Hawkwind's
"Warrior At the Edge Of Time" and THEN we can all be in Audio Heaven!

Growing up in the 60s, I'd obviously heard of King Crimson, but was far too young to appreciate what I might have heard all those years ago. A few centuries later (lol), here I am, very much liking the production.
The genre is entered in as rock, but the subtle sounds are, to me, anything but. Really good music. There's even a flute playing on Track 2. Really appreciate a good album. I expected loud, almost angry sounds after seeing that cover picture. Don't be put off by that. It's one of the most gentle albums, from what I've heard so far, that I have in my collection.
