Having owned and admired the classic paperback edition of this standard work, I’m disappointed that it’s been ill-served by this revised re-publication. Weatherhill’s text remains concise, informed and engrossing and his directions to reach each site remain valid even in the Google maps era. However, an effort to turn the work into a coffee table book has failed. It is now much less handy to take on your travels of exploration, but the real problem lies in its production values. Nearly all of the photographs are mediocre, both technically and artistically. There are countless beautiful images of these monuments available: that such a sorry collection of photos - predominantly from two photographers - was used speaks of editorial slackness. To make matters worse, the many maps, diagrams and illustrations are crudely and unattractively executed. Weatherhill deserves better than this. Four stars for his text, two for the book’s designer.

Written by one of Cornwall's most renowned authors and archeologists, this book remains a masterpiece and a standard reference for those who seek the real and often hidden history of Cornwall.

With an engrossing introduction and then a wonderful directory of Cornwall's many ancient sites accompanied by drawings, plans and photographs, I treasure this book and value what I have learned from it.

This is a scholarly work, but very accessible and interesting at every level. The author clearly loves his subject, and reveals so much information in such an enthusiastic way, it is obvious that he enjoyed what must have been a great deal of research in the field. If we had previously only had a passing interest in West Country archaeology, this excellent book makes us want to follow in his footsteps and see for ourselves the huge number of fascinating sites he describes so well.
