Powered by a savvy fusion of the quartet's '60s soul roots and shrewd New Jack production conceits, their 1991 Motown debut found instant success via its infectious debut single, the dance-oriented R&B chart-topper "Motownphilly." The follow-up, an emotive, a cappella cover of "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday" (from the '70s film Cooley High, to which the album's title paid tribute), was nearly as successful. More importantly, its tight, flawless harmonies became the band's musical calling card. 90年代で最も活躍したR&Bグループといえば、Boyz II Menを思い浮かべる人が多いと思う。そんな彼らのデビュー作がこれ。
New EditionのMichael Bivinsに見出され、1991年にMotownからリリースされた。
このアルバムについては購入に際してやや注意が必要な点がある。まず黒と白を基調としたややオールドスクールな印象のジャケットのCDが、91年にリリースされたもの。そして、赤と青を基調として4人がアップで写っているのが93年に再発されたものである。
91年発売盤に収録された曲はMichael Bivins主導、つまりDallas Austin制作曲がほとんどで、93年再発盤は92年のサントラ「Boomerang」収録のBabyfaceによる大ヒットシングル"End Of The Road"を中心に数曲追加したバージョンとなる。後者にはシングル曲のリミックスなども収録されているためお得感はあるが、収録順などアルバムのバランスは微妙。"End Of The Road"目当てなら後者を購入ください。本レビュー内容も後者（且つスパニッシュ版収録バージョン）に基づくものとする。
アルバムは全米最高3位、アメリカだけで900万枚の売上を残す大ヒットとなった。彼らにとっては2ndアルバムに次ぐ成功である。

(1)はラスト(17)に収録されている前述の大ヒットバラード"End Of The Road"のスペイン語バージョン。(17)は92年のサントラ「Boomerang」に収録されたL.A. & BabyfaceとDaryl Simmons制作の彼らにとって5枚目のシングルで、全米チャート13週連続1位となった代表曲である。この曲は93年のグラミー賞で2つの賞を勝ち取った。後の彼らのスタイルを決定付けた王道スタイルの名曲なのだが、このスペイン語バージョンを(1)に持ってくるというのはアルバムの構成としては疑問。
(2)"Please Don't Go"はDallas作のバラードで4thシングル。独特な2ndヴァースが面白く、個人的に(17)よりも好きな曲。(4)"This Is My Heart"はアコースティックギター使いの気怠げな雰囲気が良いバラード。(5)は(15)"Uhh Ahh"の続編的な曲。この(15)はR&Bチャートで1位を記録した3rdシングルである。
そして彼らの実力を世に知らしめたのがアカペラの(6)"It's So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday"である。2ndシングルとして全米2位まで登りつめたこの曲はG.C. Cameronの75年曲カヴァーで、当時流行していたアカペラ曲の中でも最も印象的な曲の1つである。(16)にはアレンジされたバージョンが収録されているが、こちらも良い出来。続く(7)"In The Still Of The Nite"もThe Five Satinsの75年曲アカペラカヴァーで、こちらは(17)と同様サントラ収録後に追加された曲となる。
ここからはアップが続く。(8)は(13)"Motownphilly"のリミックスで、この(13)は彼らのデビューシングルとなったニュージャック曲。アップ曲としては恐らく彼らの最大のヒットかと思われる。Michael Bivinsのラップも入るように、かなりBBD色の強い曲だ。
この(13)同様、現場で人気の高いのは(14)"Sympin"で、(10)はそのリミックス。何と言っても映画007のテーマをサンプリングしているのでインパクトが強い。The Charactersによる(11)"Little Things"はキュートなアップで、ニュージャックよりもこういった曲のほうが彼らには合っているように思える。

1つのアルバム内に、別バージョンとはいえ同じ曲の組み合わせが複数収録されているのは評価の別れる所。
構成が気に入らない方はオリジナル版のみ登録したプレイリストなり作成して楽しむのが良いかと。

This is such a classic CD you can literally picture people dancing 90s type dance moves while listening to these tracks. All of the original songs are included along with some pretty decent remixes. I would have liked to see the original order of the songs followed by the remixes, but I guess I could always do that by ripping the CD to my PC and reordering the tracks. Classic old school R&B the way it was meant to be!

If you haven't heard of Boyz II Men, their music is full of soul and they have poured their hearts into each track. Anyone who has dated and been in relationships can relate to many of the songs on this disc.

I can recall hearing Boyz 2 Men at the age of 18. I had just left for college out of state, and their debut Cd received alot of airplay and praise. It was and still is an amazing collection of music! These guys from Philly are super talented. They harmonize perfectly, and every song is great! No profanity, disrespect, just good wholesome music for your listening pleasure. They also include some additional tracks, remixes of their hits, and a song in Spanish. I love it!

I grew up listening to these guy during the best yrs of my life 17-21 and still 21 yrs. later I purchased all they're music. IMO Boyz ll Men were one of the best R&B singers of my generation.
