As a scholarly treatment of a modern British novelist, The Complete Works of Evelyn Waugh looks as if it will stand in a class of its own, not only for its presentation of definitive texts but also for its patient accumulation of large amounts of personal material that have hitherto escaped the biographers' gaze. (D.J Taylor, Literary Review)
A must read. (David Sexton, Evening Standard) --このテキストは、ハードカバー版に関連付けられています。
With tales that range from the author's childish mis-spellings to his most sophisticated satire, Evelyn Waugh's short stories become more enjoyable with each re-reading. Every tale provides its own genre of satisfaction: I especially enjoy the sardonic twists of "Mr Loveday's Little Outing", "The Sympathetic Passenger", and "Portrait of Young Man with Career"; the fascinating 'prequel' to "Brideshead", "Charles Ryder's Schooldays"; the sophisticated nonsense of "Basil Seale Rides Again", and the laugh-out-loud satire on chaos in the southern European climes, "Scott-King's Modern Europe". For me, the very compression of the stories sets Mr Waugh's narrative technique into its sharpest focus.
For anyone who enjoys the taste of elegant prose laced with sparkling wit, "The Complete Short Stories of Evelyn Waugh" deserves a place that is both prominent and permanent in one's well-stocked storehouse of vintage literature.
