Stephen Knapp has studied the major Vedic texts of India and practiced yoga and the Eastern teachings for 40 years. He has traveled throughout India and has a collection of over 18,000 slides and images of the many holy places and temples he has visited. He has authored over twenty well-received books on Vedic culture and Eastern spirituality. He also regularly gives lectures at various venues both in America and in India. He is also a past president of the Vedic Friends Association. Though a review, this book is excellent material for starters .. who want to know what Vedic literature is all about. It gives insight on Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas , Bhagvad Geeta, and talks more on Shrimad Bhagavatam as crux of Vedic knowledge. ( It is said Ved Vyasa,himself not satisfied with all his compilations of Veda / Upanishads, was adviced by his Spiritual Guru Narada Muni to write what he felt after self realization of Absolute Truth..thats when Bhagavatam/ Bhagavat Purana/ Vedanta came,as his best creation.)
This book tells, in chronology, about the Sages from Ashoka era onwards on what they wrote/ commented and how they influenced the understanding on Vedic knowledge. Stories on Sages Shankarachrya ( 509-477 BC),Ramanuja (1017-1137),Madhavacharya (1239-1319), Vallabhacharya ( 1478-1530 ), Chaitanya MahaPrabhu (1486-1534)keeps one intrigued and gives parallel details of medieval India which many of us dont know.
Its an interesting read before moving on to serious stuff or books like Bhagvad Geeta or Bhagavatam itself. Before I do so, want to read few more of this author's other books. He keeps things simple as much as possible.. good for beginners.
