another recent amazon purchase as was looking for further Chinese music for my collection + although i had read several good amazon reviews for the various releases of this popular concerto i plumped for this naxos releases had garnered favourable comments.
the cd is in essence as the title of my review suggests, for fans of camp entertainer Liberace who might play in the late Romantic concerto style of Rachmaninov via Bejing.. the recording quality is very good , the playing is crisp + virtuostic but the Yellow River Concerto is hardly essential piano repertoire for serious classical fans. its enjoyable if you like your high drama, cloying sentimentality in music. much of music on this well filled cd is eminently enjoyable in a possible ironic background lounge bar kind of way - emotional depth, innovative composition are largely absent.. whereas Prokofiev ,Shostakovich, Schnittke used irony in some of their Officially approved "classical" Romanatic style works - here the Chinese composers' merely emulate the broader late Romnatic model adding Oriental scales to the already heady mix.
the solo piano pieces follow a similar path - but do contain some charming moments of repose, but this collection is altogether far too sweet for this particualar reviewers palette.
vaguely enjoyable high drama/high camp classical-lite .
