The Christian path is incredibly tough. If you really know what it means to be on God's team, you'll understand that staying on it is an uphill struggle. I bought this book ten years ago and failed to actually pick it up and read it. I was a fool for ignoring it for so long.

If you want or more to the point if you need (and we do all need), the tough, no nonsence guide to sticking to God like glue and how to bat for his team effectively, how to understand and deal with all those underhand tricks the devil is always pushing upon us. If you want strength and support and a reminder about why you're a Christian, why reading the bible is so important and how to get the most from being with God, please, please get this book. I am certain you won't regret it.

I have read many books on the "Armor of God", but "The Christian in Complete Armor" by William Gurnall is the most eBiblically founded and has the greatest depth of spiritual understanding of any I have read. I highly recommend this book for the Spiritually minded person.

William Gurnall wrothe this in 1655 and is the most masterful communicator utilizing "word pictures" that I have ever run across. And I am 70 years old. This is the first of 3 volumes expounding upon the Christian armor as written in the book of Ephesians. In my opinion, after reading this, it is no wonder that the Christian church is so ineffective in our time. This is a life changing book!!!!!!!!

Not only can I understand what concept he is explaining, I can immediately apply it to my life right away because of his powerful writing style. An example I can remember is about "We wrestle not with flesh and blood..." I had thought of it as a wrestling match, go into a ring and have a skirmish. It has an end. Where did I get this image? From TV images. Tho not a wrestling fan, in a movie I'm sure I saw a match which lasted maybe 5 minutes on film and it had a winner in the end of the 5 minutes. So, that is what we humans can think of as we read Ephesians. For me, this image has never been changed by any sermonette I have heard.

But W. Grunell first starts off by explaining that a wrestling match is a direct contact sport. And that it is NOT a recreational sport. In addition, unlike any other sport, it continues until there is a winner. So, for us Christians, this wrestling we will be doing with our enemy is NOT over until we finally reach either reach heaven or are taken out of this world.

This truth brings an entirely different light upon our stay here on earth and our work for God. It means that during this "match" we will have times of fatigue but through our faith and the strength of God, we can finish the race. Please excuse me but I certainly didn't do justice to William Grunell's incredible description of the "wrestling match". His description that it is NOT a recreational sport spoke very powerfully to me. It changed my mental picture, idea, concept, that somehow made it into my consciousness that; for the Christian were are engages is a "sort of" recreational sport with the enemy. Nothing could be farther from the truth!!! This alone changed my daily life.

Also, somewhere along in reading fairly early in the book, I learned to "Look to the heart of God". It wasn't stated exactly like that but I quickly made the translation. To use this concept on a daily basis: I was explaining to a nursing co-worker, Think of all those times in our lives we need to make a decision. A "sticky decision" where there isn't a clear cut answer in scripture. Those common, fairly mundane decisions. Or some common relatively small sticky roadblocks, usually with family and friends. She quickly smiled and nodded as we all remember those all too common events in our lives. So I said, I now just think of the concept, "See the heart of God". This is so easy to do because scripture is brimming over with examples. Now, I am able to fairly easily and quickly navigate through these darts from Satan.

Honestly, this book is so incredible that I have ordered four additional books and sent 2 to family, one to a doctor, and one to the nursing co-worked above mentioned. I will be placing another order soon as have a list as I am given names by the good Lord who He would like to receive these books. I am also sending a few to a church out in New Mexico. I do hope someone who reads this will be moved by the Holy Spirit to read this great book by William Grunell. Mine has notations everywhere in it. He has so many "nuggets of truth that I have started a small book so I can remember them in appropriate times.
Look to the heart of God
Satan tries to squeeze between God and the saint
Do not complain about the providence of God
We are a wrestler, not a conqueror
Contention throws the soul into chaos
Power is the rightful attribute of God alone.

DEEPLY ENRICHING CLASSIC BUT DIFFICULT TO READ

Classic book written in the 1600s, treasured through the centuries. It meticulously and comprehensively looks at how spiritual attack occurs and how to fully clothe yourself with God's protection. Jam packed with Godly wisdom and instruction.
The only (but signficant) problem is the old style English language which for a modern reader is hard going. I persisted through half the book, gleaning lots of wisdom, but ended up stopping because reading the book was plain hard work. I had to read slowly and constantly re-read sentences to understand it.
There is a modernised version of the book which I also own, which is much easier to read and quite faithful to the original. However, as I found out, it is the authors' version of what was originally written. It follows the original but is not the same book. The ideas and concepts are generally the same but the wording can be quite different. I once made the error of quoting William Gurnall using the modern version which expressed something really well, only to find out the original wording was nothing like it and not as meaningful!
If you can enjoy old style English, and want to know what Gurnall actually wrote, you need the original. If you just want to get an overall detailed impression of what he wrote but with someone else's wording, then the modernised version should be your choice.

The christian in complete armour is a must read for every believer and anyone in ministry in every sector of the hierarchy of the christian church in any denomonation. There are three volumes I have read them all.Iwill and have begun reading them again.I am reading the second volume now.
This book was published in the year 1665.the teaching has had a tremendous impact in my life and has opened great reverence for the word of God, the Holy Bible.I truly feel the teachings are soul searching and will go deep into ourselves and discernment is revealed and the Holy Spirit will come along to help interpret the word that is so,beautiful words cannot describe.

Updated from several centuries back, it is still a readable but not current style of writing. The longer sentences and longer paragraphs are a welcome relief from magazine style writing. Might prove troublesome for those new to English. I do think it's worth reading. EXCELLENT content. Quite quotable.

This is classic Christian writing at its best. I read it as a devotional and also in a group Bible study. There are short topical sections so you don't have to read a lot at one time if you don't want to. In my opinion, the author is right up there with Oswald Chambers.
