ビージーズがアリフマーディンの力を借りず、いっきにソウルミュージックへ脱皮した記念すべきアルバム。力がみなぎった歌唱と素晴らしい曲揃いです。この後に、サタディーナイトフィーバーのあの名曲が生まれますが、このアルバムだけでも頂上を極めている感じなので、この後にヒット曲を連発するビージーズは、ポップミュージックの怪物だったのです。

このレビューは2022年11月23日に再発された日本盤CDについてのものです。

前作『メイン・コース』で念願のアメリカでの成功を成し遂げたビー・ジーズだが、なんとアリフ・マーディンの起用が叶わず、カール・リチャードソンとアルビー・ガルートンとの共同プロデュースで本作を作り上げた。しかし、彼らは『ホリゾンタル』から『ライフ・イン・ア・ティン・キャン』まで、プロデューサーとしてクレジットされており、アリフの起用が異色だったのだ。つくづく天才なのだなと思う。

このアルバム、いよいよ黒くなっていく。前作はまだ旧来のイメージも感じられたが、本作は振り切ってブラック・ミュージックに正面から取り組んだ感じだ。数あるアルバムの中で、最も黒いのが本作だ。バリーのファルセットは益々磨きがかかって文句を言わせない。当然、リード・ヴォーカルも彼の独壇場となっていく。ロビン・ファンの私としては、成功はうれしいが少し寂しかった。

「ユー・シュッド・ビー・ダンシング」が大傑作なのは言うまでもない。「偽りの愛」は3人でファルセットでハモッてるなと思えて微笑ましい。しかし第三弾シングルの「ブーギ・チャイルド」はちょっといただけない。以前のインタビューでロビンが、『アース・ウィンド・アンド・ファイアーの大ファンでアース風の曲をやりたかったんだ』と発言していたが、シングルにまでしなくてもと思う。しかし「ブーギ」ではなく、「ブギー」が正しいと昔から思っているけど、どうなんでしょう？

その他お気に入りは、颯爽と地下鉄に乗っている気になる「サブウェイ」、「悲しませることなんてできないよ」は『Hear At Last Live』での演奏が素晴らしかった。「帰りこぬ日々」はブルー・ウイーバーがクレジットされているが、解説によると『ブルーのメロディに基づいてバリーが展開させた』とのこと。「ジャイブ・トーキン」の印象的なシンセサイザーの演奏は、本作でも「愛の侵入者」や「サブウェイ」でも顕著だが、ブルーの貢献度は本当に高いと言える。

最後に「ラブ・ミー」は、『最初バリーが歌おうとしてうまくいかず、ロビンに振った』と解説にあるが、もっとロビンに歌ってもらいたかったと、改めて思った。

和名で帰りこぬ日々が1番好きな曲。ブルーウィーバーの力強いピアノとバリーギブが切々と歌う美しいメロディがたまらなく良いのです。他ブギーチャイルドや恋人同志、サブウェイシングルカットされなかったけど傑作揃いです

「フィーバー」前夜。いまにも爆発しそうなビージーズを堪能できます。全編チープなシンセがみなぎっていますが、彼らの鉄壁のコーラス・ワークはものともしません。ジャケットの、自信に溢れる三人の表情を見よ！

I remember when CHILDREN OF THE WORLD first came out back in 1976, Michael McDonald had just joined The Doobie Brothers, Hall and Oates were getting underway, Boz Skaggs was releasing some truly soul filled music and The Bee Gees were in the midst of one of the most important musical transformations in music history. The "Blue Eyed Soul" movement was squarely underway and it was a time when soul (R&B) was truly the center of were music was headed topping the charts with artists and bands, both black and white, who were producing great music. Indeed it was such a beautiful time, for the 4 or 5 minutes the song was playing, it didn't matter the color of the artists or bands skin just that incredible lyrics, outstanding compositions and phenomenal musicianship were on full display.

The Bee Gees had gone through a full metamorphosis by the time this album was released. Gone was the band who couldn't escape the unfair and rather ridiculous comparisons to their older british comtemporaries, especially The Beatles. I always felt they stood on their own merit and made just as good, if not, better material in the mid to late 1960's. They seemed trapped, even by their manager, Robert Stigwood, into being the younger version of their older contemporaries from britain. In the early 1970's they seemed to be trying to find themselves and their own identity and began to pull away from Stigwood's direction towards their own.

Even though they had already produced some of the most amazing albums, songs and performances ever, they were attempting to discover who they truly were as artists. On the advice of their friend, Eric Clapton, they moved their entire operation to the U.S. in Miami Florida and began working with the great producer, Arif Mardin, who truly took time to figure out what type of music they wanted to produce. He turned them on to the growing R&B and dance scene which he felt was perfect for their singing, songwriting and performance skills. Mardin would, due to contractual issues, only produce 2 albums with the band, MR. NATURAL & MAIN COURSE, however, he would also start them down the path that would soon lead to one of the single most important and incredible periods in music history.

This album is the first where the Gibbs are the sole producers and you see a very mature and confident band that's tight and ready to take the music world by storm. This would lead to some of the greatest songs of their career and their songwriting prowess, especially Barry's, would now take center stage in music. Barry and Robin Gibb are every bit the songwriting duo as any of their contemporaries and with songs like "You Should Be Dancing"; "You Stepped Into My Life"; "Love So Right"; "Love Me" and "Children Of The World", the brothers were giving notice that they were indeed here to stay. This was a great time in music and The Bee Gees were a major reason why.

Having only heard some of this album briefly when it was released in 1976, it remained for me almost forgotten after the `Saturday Night Fever' tsunami swamped us all the following year. `Children Of The World' marks a high water mark of the Bee Gees R&B period and demonstrates clearly the influence master producer and arranger Arif Mardin had on the Gibb brothers. Borrowing stylistically from all the R&B of the day, `Children Of The World' shows that soul, funk and R&B were at the heart of the Bee Gees `70s output rather than the simplistic `disco' label that became toxic by the end of the decade. Songs like `Jive Talkin', `You Should Be Dancing', and subsequently `Night Fever' made a large if unintended contribution to defining the disco movement. With artists like Yvonne Elliman and Tavares having chart-topping success covering many of their songs in a heavier `disco' style that along with the global success of Saturday Night Fever, permanently sealed the Bee Gees association with disco.

Unlike `Spirits Having Flown' the follow up album post SNF, `Children Of The World' feels altogether a more complete work with a greater sense of itself. This may be as a result of the central role all three brothers played on this album that seems less evident on `Spirits Having Flown'. `Children Of The World' also has a pleasing spread of R&B styles. The opening track, the 4-on-the-floor club classic `You Should Be Dancing', quickly makes way for `You Stepped Into My Life', a cool funk track that racks up the anticipation of a rounded musical experience to come. It doesn't disappoint. More funk awaits with a standout track `Boogie Child' featuring an exceptional string and horn arrangement, perfectly complimented by soul ballads `Love So Right' and `Love Me', the Yvonne Elliman hit. Title track `Children Of The World' brings up the rear with its flawless a-capella opening and ending that certainly left me with the urge to listen to the whole thing again from the start.

Memorable songs, high production values and some of the finest studio musicians combine to make `Children Of The World' a classic. Two often-overlooked members of the Bee Gees creative team are keyboardist Blue Weaver and drummer Dennis Byron whose studio contribution in my opinion was immeasurable across most of the successful `70s output . Dennis Byron, especially for his great feel and solidity and Blue Weaver for his sensitivity and masterful interpretative skills.

Give the never ending greatest hits compilations a miss for a change. `Children Of The World' is an album no Bee Gees collection should ever be without.

Like others have stated, if you liked 'Main Course' by The Bee Gees, you will like this cd too. The music on this disc is great and I bought this group of songs enough in different formats, so I must love it. Yes, I still have the 8-track, the LP and the original cd version. I also had it in cassette, but it is long gone. You obviously like the music of this disc or you would not be here and since so many others have commented on the music, I want to comment on the sound quality, in everyday terms.

Like so many of you, when it came out on cd, I snapped it up. I hope I can now save many of you the disappointment I felt in purchasing this cd all over again for the sole reason of it being - REMASTERED.

I am not going to say it is not Remastered, but I do have my doubts. I transferred the songs to WAV files and matched it against the original cd put out years ago. The changes I could see in the graphs were very minimal at best and volume level was about the same, very low. It is almost as if they may have added a small bit of volume and called it Remastered.

When I listen to selections from 'Children Of The World' on either the Remastered 'Greatest Hits' or Remastered 'Mythology' or Remastered 'The Record', the songs sound vibrant and fresh as if they were made to today's standards. 'Children Of The World' disc sounds like it was copied from a cheap source and not the quality sound you'd expect from The Bee Gees and Reprise. The other Remasters sound clear, full and crisp. The WAV files of these songs also are very noticeably fuller than those from 'Children Of The World'.

When I compare the cd inlay and cover, they are very identical and the cover is actually a folded cover with no pages like a booklet would have. The inside is basiaclly the same although they added about 6 lines of written text from the title song to a picture. When you read the credits, they are the same word for word and nothing is written about it being a 'Remastered' disc as it is advertised here and other places.

All and all, if you have the original cd, there is no need to waste your money on this one as you will not notice any written or sound differences. If you do not have this disc and like it or like the Bee Gees from the 70's, it is a great disc. For quality Remastered Bee Gees though, stick to the compilation discs I mentioned. Reprise blew it on this one. I just hope that someone will come out with a truly Remastered 'Children Of The World' and 'Main Course'. Hope this helps you. Children of the World
