チャーリー・バケット少年は、この夢のような招待券を偶然手に入れた。道で1ドル紙幣を拾った彼は、どうしてもがまんできずに、あこがれのワンカのチョコバーを2本買ってしまう。そのお金があれば、貧しい家族に食べ物を買えることはわかっていたのに…。しかし2本目の包みを開けたとき、下の方でかすかに光るものを見つけたのだ！

その翌日、チャーリーはいよいよ工場の門をくぐる。一緒に行くのは、テレビっ子のマイク・テービー、お金持ちのお嬢様ベルーカ・ソルト、ガムが大好きなバイオレット・ボールガード、それに食いしん坊のオーガスタス・グループ。4人ともどこか頼りない。はたしてチョコレート工場の秘密とは何か、なぞめいた経営者ワンカとは何者なのか、その答えが5人の目の前でしだいに明らかになる。秘密のチョコレート工場はうわさ以上の、驚くべき場所だった。そしてそこでチャーリーを待ちうけていたのは、もう二度ともとの生活には戻れない運命だった。

著者について

Roald Dahl (1916-1990) was born in Wales of Norwegian parents. He spent his childhood in England and, at age eighteen, went to work for the Shell Oil Company in Africa. When World War II broke out, he joined the Royal Air Force and became a fighter pilot. At the age of twenty-six he moved to Washington, D.C., and it was there he began to write. His first short story, which recounted his adventures in the war, was bought by The Saturday Evening Post, and so began a long and illustrious career.

After establishing himself as a writer for adults, Roald Dahl began writing children’s stories in 1960 while living in England with his family. His first stories were written as entertainment for his own children, to whom many of his books are dedicated.

Roald Dahl is now considered one of the most beloved storytellers of our time. Although he passed away in 1990, his popularity continues to increase as his fantastic novels, including James and the Giant Peach, Matilda, The BFG, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, delight an ever-growing legion of fans.

内容は、映画でもご存じのように、不思議なチョコレート工場の見学を、あるときは人生に対する皮肉や、あるときは生きる上での示唆をちりばめながらおもしろおかしく描いており、大変楽しめます。特にkindle版は、Word Wiseや辞書引き、単語帳などの様々な機能が、日本人の英語の学習を助けてくれます。
　ただし、kindle版は上述した利点がある一方で、各機能が有効になっていない書籍があったり、容量の関係からか図版の解像度不足から、細かい字や数字が読めなかったりする欠陥書籍もありますので、購入前に細かいところまでしっかり調べてから購入することをお薦めします。
　また、購入者が不利益を被らないように、良い点も問題点もプレビューで積極的に情報交換しましょう。

洋書の入門書として度々目にするので読んでみました。文法は非常に簡単ですが、単語レベルでは非常に出現頻度の低い単語が所々に散りばめられていて、そこまで初心者向けとも言えないようにも思いました。

内容はやや残念で、最初に工場に入るまでは多少は楽しめましたが、工場に入った後は脈絡無く唐突な展開が続くかと思えば、終わり方も唐突過ぎて、かと言って冗談にしては笑えないし後味は悪いし…。悪いことをしてしまう子供も登場しますが、可愛らしさや愛着のようなものも感じられなくて、どうしてこんなに人気なのかさっぱり分からない本でした（個人的な感想ですが）。

英検二級を持ってる方ならかなり楽に読める本だと思います。
単語も簡単なものが多く、文法と熟語も一緒に覚えられて、わからない単語や熟語もゲスして考えられるようになり辞書も必要ありません。二級レベルでない方には少し難しい本だと思います。ただかなり勉強になりますし、大学受験する方にもおすすめで、長文対策になります。早慶以上を受ける方はもう少し難しい本がおすすめです。

子供に薦める本を探し始めなければ生涯出会うことがなかった本です。が、ロアルド・ダールのユーモア一杯でめまぐるしく変化する展開は大人が読んでも最後まで飽きることはないでしょう。
特に文中登場人物同士の会話が多く、生き生きとした会話表現は勉強になりました。
英語学習を始めたばかりの小学生の子供には早速日本語翻訳版「チョコレート工場の秘密」を薦め1、2年後にペーパーバックを薦めたいと思います。
従って翻訳本と原文の両方を読み比べました。翻訳本はかなり厳密に訳されていますから原文を読んで少々怪しいところが出てきたら翻訳本と見比べると良いでしょう。
唯一、ウーパールーパーの韻を踏んだ詩は、翻訳本では何の面白さもなくなってしまいますがこれは仕方がないですね。
何れにせよ英語勉強中の方には子供にも大人にもお薦めしたい一冊です。

映画は何度か見ましたが、原作を読んで主人公がかわいそうで泣きそうになりました。
英語の勉強で購入。中学生レベルの英語知能で辞書を引きながら読みましたが内容がわかりました。文字サイズがちょうどよく、短いチャプターで区切られているのがよかったです。２度目はそっとすらすら読めるような気がします。

　炎天下でも溶けないアイスクリーム、いくら噛んでも味のなくならないガムなど、不思議なお菓子を次々に作り出すウィリー・ワンカ・チョコレート工場。謎だらけのその工場が、とうとう公開されることになった。ただし、中に入れるのはたったの５人だけ！その５人の入場者たちが工場内で見たものは・・・。
　ストーリーの面白さは文句なしです。登場人物はいずれも個性的な人たちばかり。貧しくても優しく家族思いなチャーリーと、金持ちだけれど心の曲がった他の子供たちとの対照も、皮肉が効いています。お茶目なジョーおじいさんや、エキセントリックなウィリー・ワンカ氏からも目が離せず、グイグイと物語に引き込まれていきます。
　もう一つ注目すべきなのは、物語の中で使われている言葉の多彩さです。同じ悪口でもそのたびに言葉が変えてあったり、事件が起こるたびに脚韻を踏んだ楽しい歌が出てきたり、言葉遊び的な言い回しを使ったり、と「子供たちにより多くの言葉にふれてもらおう」という作者の意図がよく伝わってきます。その意味でも、この本は是非英語で読むことをお薦めします。
　個人的には、ベルーカが駄々をこねて「あれがほしーの！」というのを聞いたジョーおじいさんが「あいつに必要なのはおしりにケリを入れてもらうことだけじゃ」とつぶやく場面で、'want'の意味を使ったうまい切り返しに思わず笑ってしまいました。
　これだけワクワクする面白さを味わわせながらも、子供たちへのメッセージもしっかり込め、同時に言語感覚を磨いてくれる良質の物語はなかなかお目にかかれません。大人・子供を問わず読んでもらいたい本です。

This story is about a boy named Charlie Bucket who lived with his family. His family barely managed to survive with very little money. There would be some days when Charlie would survive on cabbage soup or just starve. His life was totally miserable.

The 5 lucky finders of these 5 Golden tickets would earn a free day tour in his giant chocolate factory and would also be allowed to see the secrets and magic of his factory.

I really do find it astonishing that this book was published in 1964 as it definitely feels much later. As I said in my preamble, this was a book in my childhood. I can still picture the purple cover with a massive chocolate-making machine on it, surrounded by the golden ticket winners. But the novel has endured right up to present day, with Roald Dahl novels still being a core staple of any bookshop.

The story is marvellous, and has a lovely hero Charlie Bucket, who lives in poor conditions with his mother, father, and 4 elderly grandparents, all surviving on cabbage soup and a slice of bread and margarine. The family is so sweet. Charlie insists on sharing his annual bar of chocolate with his family and when Grandpa Joe has a coin, it is Charlie he wants to spend it on.

But it is the chocolate factory that tantalises and delights and Mr Wonka himself, one of Dahl's most enigmatic characters who make this book. There is almost a childlike quality about Willy Wonka. Picture his reaction when Mike Teavee asks quite sensible questions, and he pretends to be deaf or accuses Mike of mumbling so he doesn't have to answer them.

Just like a chocolate bar, the world of Willy Wonka is shiny wrapped and full of colour and sensation, designed to tempt. The names of the chocolate bars: a whipple-scrumptious fudgemallow delight, a chewing gum that provides a 3 course meal, a land where the chocolate is mixed, complete with edible green grass and fruits. All from the imagination of one of the best storytellers.

The other children are truly ghastly and leave us rooting for Charlie. But again these characters have become some of the best known in literature.

This is Dahl at his best, the language, the story, the chocolate. All serve to delight and entertain. I agree, this is my favourite Dahl book and deserves its place at #35 on the BBC Big Read List.

Other reviewers were excited to receive a large-sized, colour-illustrated version. But I just received a normal paperback version with a few black/white illustrations on some pages. I didn’t need the fancy version and the description didn’t promise it but it was disappointing anyway.

Ahh... memories!

I remember one particularly wet summer holiday in my youth, snuggling up with my Mum, and listening to this book, whilst the rain hammered on the windows and thunder rattled the rooftops. So I borrowed this book from our library (yes, we actually found one!) and read it three times to my 4 year old son, over the space of about 7 weeks. Feeling a little guilty, we returned the book, begrudgingly in my son's case. I look forward to seeing his face when he opens this on his birthday next month!

As a child I had mixed feelings about Dahl's books, but loved the films, especially the classic Gene Wilder version. Now that I have a little boy of my own I'm working on instilling the magic of books, and decided to try him on a paperback of the Fantastic Mr Fox - he loved it, and so did I. Next up some more substantial fare - enter Charlie. I have to say the book is great - I'm enjoying reading it and my son (very nearly 4) is fascinated by all the details - cabbage soup for dinner and mattresses on the floor etc.

I was particularly interested to see how he'd take to being read to from my tablet - he loves it and likes watching me flick the pages - I was a little worried the medium would be intrusive, but actually I think it works really well.

I haven't yet picked up any of the page-setting errors other reviewers have noted,so these may well have been remedied now, and the illustrations are luminous and lovely on my Blackberry Playbook (with side-loaded android kindle). I am particularly pleased to see that the kindle version is appropriately priced at £1.99 compared to the full price for the paperback.
