A great loss to the musical world, and so sad that she was so young. I bought this record for the Kol Nidrei, and the sound of her playing it is heart rending. To hear her play you would think she was born Jewish as she puts all the sadness and pain of the Diaspora, pogroms and Holocaust into her playing. She converted to Judaism wnen she married Daniel Barenboim, Maybe I'm wrong, but I can hear that pain in her playing. I daresay it's possible she'd heard the cantors sing in this way, so it's possible she was familiar with it.
The record also contains the Brahms Cello sonatas 1 and 2 but I am not familiar with these so I can't make an assessment of them.
They sound fine to me but I am not a musician. Therefore I can't tell you about her technique - whether she was Excellent in her performances, or just competent, but the sound she makes on that beautiful Cello simply talks to me.
Are there, or were there better cellists? There were, and still are fine cellists around: Pablo Casals, Mstislav Rostropovich, Paul Tortellier, Julian LLoyd-Webber, Steven Isserlis, to mention a few, and there are many fine cellists coming out of the far east like YoYo Ma etc. Are any of them they better? I don't know, but even if they were I would still have a soft spot for Jacqueline.
