スーパースターを歌うスーパースター！

ツアーに追われ時間不足で作ったアルバムですが、進境著しく、見る見る間にスーパースターを歌うスーパースター、カーペンターズのサウンドが確立されていった、その成果が現れていると思われます。
個人的にA＆Mスタジオを訪れた、巨匠ヘンリー・マンシーニより直々に送られた、簡素なピアノ伴奏によるSometimes に、カレンの驚くべき才能が端的に現れており、聴くたびに感銘を新たにする名盤です。

まだ中学生のころラジオから流れるSUPER STARを聞き、なんでベイビーベイビーと連呼？
って思ったのが昨日のようです。
後日分かったのですが、ベイビーは赤ちゃんでなく恋人の事なんですね。。。
ビートルズ解散後ロックは多様化し始め、この当時カーペンターズはソフトロックと呼ばれてました。
レオン・ラッセルの名曲であり妖艶な雰囲気が魅力的な「SUPER STAR」はじめ代表曲の１つ
「雨の日と日曜日は」で始まるこのアルバムで早くもカーペンターズサウンドは確立され、
翌年「A SONG FOR YOU」というポピュラー史に残る超傑作を作り上げました。
「追伸」
この輸入盤も音が小さいです。少々高いですが日本盤をお薦めします。

当時　中学１年の頃　自作のゲルマニウムラジオから聞こえて来た「スーパースター」に衝撃を受けたのが始まりだった　
中学１年の少年には物凄く刺激的な曲であり歌がそこに有った　あれから４２年　とうとう　この有名なジャケットデザインの「Carpenters 」を聞く日がやって来たのだ！
「雨の日と日曜日は」から「サムタイムス」まで　それこそ完璧な出来と言う他ないでしょう　年１枚のアルバム製作の中にあって　たった３枚目で頂点を迎えた大傑作アルバムであると思う　　
リチャードとカレンという兄妹が居たからこそ成しえた音楽遺産的アルバムと言っても大袈裟ではない　Popsファンならずとも　とにかく聞いて頂きたい素晴らしいアルバムです　

私の個人的嗜好から言わせていただくと　やはり「Superster」　　カレンの歌声はまさに女神です

前作で頂点を極めたカーペンターズが落ち着きと余裕をもって作り上げた秀作

前作、”遥かなる影”で初めての全米１位を獲得したカーペンターズはこの時期心身ともに充実した時期を過ごしていたことだろう。
このアルバムからはそのような彼らの充実感と落ち着きを感じるのだ。

前作に続いてこのアルバムにも後に彼らのコンサートでも欠かせない名曲の数々が収録されている。”Rainy Days And Mondays ””For All We Know ””Superstar ””Sometimes ”がそれだ。
それにしてもカーペンターズのアルバムにはどれも数曲の名曲、ヒット曲が収録されているが、こんなアーティストはほかにはビートルズくらいしかいないのではないだろうか。
普通であればヒットアルバムとしては一枚か二枚程度、そしてその中にヒット曲はせいぜい１、２曲といったところだろう。
この事実だけでもカーペンターズが７０年代だけではなく音楽史上でも最高のアーティストであった事を証明しているのだ。
ビートルズの音楽は現在クラシックの音楽家にも取り上げられるようになり、すでにクラシック音楽となった。クラシック音楽がなぜ素晴らしいのかというと、
その時流行した音楽も年月の流れによって良いものと悪いものに選別され良いものだけが残ってゆく、ながい年月を生き抜いた音楽・・・これがクラシック音楽であり、精神性高い本物の芸術なのだ。つまり歴史の審判を仰いだ結果時代をこえ民族をこえ残されたものなのだ。
カーペンターズの音楽はおそらくクラシックとなり、これからも多くの人の心をとらえてゆくのではないかと思うのだ。

そしてこのアルバム中” (A Place To) Hideaway ””One Love ”にはカーペンターズの不滅の名作である次回作”A Song For You ”の響きがすでに聴こえてくるのだ。

それにしてもカレンがリチャードのピアノ伴奏のみで歌う”Sometimes ”はなんと美しいのだろうか。
もしカレンが今生きていてコンサートを聴くことができるのなら、このようにリチャードのピアノ伴奏のみでカレンが歌うコンサートを聴いてみたいと私は思っているのです。

輸入盤の質が年々低下

10年位前までは、ここまでひどくなかったのに…
輸入盤の質が年々低下しています。記録面がまだらだったりボロボロだったり。私に届いたものは、新品なのに表面がべたべたで盤も異常な程まだらでした（ドイツ盤）
音楽をダウンロードで購入する方は年々増え続けており、CDはいつまで販売されるのかわかりませんので、永久保存したいなら高くても日本国内盤新品を買うことをすすめます。
国内盤はまだ質が良いです。当方回し者ではありません。今までの経験上コメントしました。
※中古CDは予想以上に傷だらけだったり、一見きれいに見えるが何度も中古店行きを繰り返して研磨されまくりで、長期保存に不向きなものが多いです。

CARPENTERSサウンドが確立されたアルバム

ベスト盤や編集盤でCARPENTERSを聴いていた人にとっては "Rainy Days And Mondays"や"Superstar"のような代表的な超名曲がほんの３枚目のアルバムに収録されていることに驚くのではないだろうか。これこそCARPENTERSがいかに早くから完全なサウンドを持っていたかを物語るものだが、このアルバムこそは彼らがCARPENTERSとして寸分の隙も無くその音楽を確立しきった最初の作品だと言えるだろう。

前作まで見受けられたようなデビュー以前の名残のような音は完全に払拭され、カレンの歌唱もここでは既にもう若々しさを乗り越えた成熟性を垣間見せている。あえて言えば、リードヴォーカルを取った２曲をはじめリチャードの露出がまだ多いかなということはあるが（それも決して否定的な意味はない）、それ以外はもうどこをどう切り取っても全盛期と同様のCARPENTERSの姿しか見えない。

完成度という点では次作以降には及ばないかもしれないが、前述の２曲を筆頭に安心して聴ける良曲が並び、お得意のメドレーまであって、愛聴者は多いのではないか。その意味でも、CARPENTERSのオリジナルアルバムを最初に聴くなら、本作が最良かもしれない。続けて4-5枚目を聴き、6-7枚目でどっぷりハマッたら、もうどれを聴いても満足すること間違いない。

The analog tapes were from 1971, and the vocals and instruments never sounded better.

This Record was unoffically called the Tan Album when it was relesaed in 1971 due to the colour of the cover sleeve.
Also it was the follow up to the Album Close To You and the Carpenters had gone to the next level with this Album. This rates as one of there best and they were now producing high quality Pop Music or Soft Rock. The opening song Rainy Days And Mondays Written by Paul Williams - Roger Nichols is a classic and the emotion in Karen's voice when she sings it is amazing. I heard this song on the car radio before buying this CD and not having listened to the song in years I was surprised but I new straight away that's Karen Carpenter singing. The second song Saturday written by Richard Carpenter - John Bettis is sung by Richard and he does a very good job with a nice up tempo song. Let Me Be The One written by Paul williams - Roger Nichols is another good song by them with Karen and Richard putting the icing on the cake. A Place To Hideaway is such a nice song and Karen's vocals are excellent as usual. For All We Know the song from the movie Lovers And Other Strangers which Richard and Karen went to see while on a break on tour in Toronto Canada before they recorded and it is a great song. Superstar written by Leon Russell - Bonnie Bramlett was sung originally by Leon Russell which I bought when released but the Carpenters version is the best thats been recorded. Druscilla Penny written by Richard Carpenter - John Bettis is sung by Richard who does another good job singing. One Love written by Richard and John Bettis is such a beautiful song. The Burt Bacharach - Hal David medley is top class with Karen And Richard in there element. The final song Sometimes words by Felice Marcini - music by Henry mancini is a beautiful song with Richard playing the piano with such a great touch and Karen singing after the intro by Richard its magic to hear. Karen's vocals as an Artist are unique and not anybody has been able to match her.
This is a great CD for all Carpenters Fans and new one's who have just discovered them.

I had the original CD releases of the Carpenters, then sold them when the remastered versions was released. Boy, to my surprise, the remastered versions were sonic-ally awful, no depth, three dimension sound stage, and Karen's voice was in echo, on every CD, seemingly the same as if they just used the same Technic, even if the original did not have echo (reverb) in it. These SHM-CD, not only are true to the original LP releases, but the sound quality is analog warm, clean and no harshness of distortion. Richard, who help master the A&M remasters, should seriously take lesson from the Japan technicians, who absolutely gets it right.

Vocals That Rip Your Heart Out

I remember growing up in the early seventies, heading into a record store with dark glasses on, looking both ways to ensure no one that I knew saw me go in to buy this Carpenters LP. Their unfortunate, sqeaky clean promo image was at its height; and I didn't want to called uncool or something even less flattering. "If only they listened to Karen's smoldering, melancholy vocals on Superstar, Rainy Days and Mondays and One Love," I thought, "perhaps they would see the light. Perhaps they would hear what I hear: an almost unbearable sadness, yearning and longing that pierces the heart; such pathos and poignance not heard since Patsy Cline."

Years after Karen died, as with many great artists, her vocals (and Richard's arrangements) were finally beginning to be appreciated. A diverse range of singers from Chrissie Hynde to Sheryl Crow to Matthew Sweet were singing Karen and Richard's praises. I was finally vindicated; I could remove my sunglasses, go into a record store and not be ashamed to say I wanted to buy a Carpenters album.

This superb collection is a showcase for Karen's extraordinary vocals. She clearly put her heart and soul into her singing. She has left us with a treasure chest full of mournful, soulfully sung tunes which we can now proudly place beside the likes of Edith Piaf and Patsy Cline. Karen belongs in their company.

I don't think I could ever have called myself a Carpenters fan but their music has always been with me and it was truly astounding to see how much of it is still available , much of it (as this is) remastered. What I had forgotten was how polished their performances were and what a gob-smackingly beautiful voice Karen had . What a shame she's no longer with us.
This is one of their earlier offerings and features the Bacherach and David medley ( chunks of which turn up , slightly re-arranged on other albums)which I have a feeling may have been part of their Cabaret set from their travelling days. Other favourites are present. Rainy Days and Mondays , For All we Know , One Love and the hauntingly beautiful, Sometimes.It has been re-mastered nicely although that hasn't been over-kind to the Bacherach and David with at least one edit showing up in sharp relief ! Whatever , at this price its a steal.Interesting to see how short the tracks are compared to modern offerings.
