Car Wash is notable not only for it's cast (including Richard Pryor and George Carlin), but also because the soundtrack (written by Motown producer Norman Whitfield and performed by the newly-formed Rose Royce) was released in advance of the movie, with the first single (title song) reaching #1 on the Billboard charts the same week that the film was released; the 2nd single, "I Want to Get Next to You," made it to Billboard's Top 10 National Pop Singles chart. Reissue features digital remastering and dialogue from the film.

If Car Wash looks and feels like a 97-minute music video, there's good reason for it. Lacking anything resembling a workable script, screenwriter Joel Schumacher (yes, him--funny how things don't change, isn't it?) enlisted Motown veteran Norman Whitfield to compose a batch of songs that would, in effect, "drive" the film. It's clear from the finished film that Schumacher never overcame his writer's block, but Whitfield more than met his end of the bargain, compiling a soundtrack that yielded three top 10 singles, and a musical oeuvre that Rose Royce is still milking to this day. Car Wash succeeds by way of its mass appeal. Whitfield forwent the parochial, if classic, Motown Sound, and incorporated elements of rock, disco, and blaxploitation-esque incidental music, resulting in a meaty--and marketable--party record. Whitfield casts Rose Royce as the new Sly and the Family Stone, and though they don't quite fill those shoes, it's a blast to hear them try. --Matt Hanks

Right On! Get Down & Boogie! I love the 70's! Disco music & dancing. Roller skating etc. Such a fun, carefree era. And one of best, memories of the 70's for me. Is the Car Wash ( Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. It always brings back, the happiest times. Of my whole life! The Car Wash Original Soundtrack. Will always hold, a special place in my heart. It's a timeless, masterpiece to me. My highlight songs, on the soundtrack are: The mega R&B/ disco hit. Car Wash) Track 1) Is a genius song! Clever, catchy chorus. That's guaranteed to win, you over immediately! It will have, you singing & dancing to it. Track 6) You're On My Mind. Makes my heart melt! A beautiful/ heartfelt love song. That almost brings, tears to my eyes. The smooth silky, soulful vocals. Are spot on! A flawless song. A home run song. Track 4) Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is. Is a too sly, very funky groove. That will make you, wanna bust a move! I love the words & magic beat. Track 5) Zag Zig. Is a very funky, horn & guitar R&B tune. The second the song starts. You'll be singing along, Zag- Zig! Zag-Zip! Over & over. A true winner. Track 12) I'm Going Down. Is a very sad, love song. A true tear-jerker. As you listen, to it. Chills will come, down you spine. The vocals are, truly golden! Track 3) I Wanna Get Next To You. Is a love song also. It's a mid- tempo song, R&B song. I love the vocals, very smooth & pitch perfect. I always sing along, with this song. If you love, this kind of music. The Car Wash: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. Is Up Your Alley!!! Check out the movie too. It's a winner, just like the sound track. Great Seller! Good Service!

If you have ever seen the film Car Wash, you will remember the importance of the soundtrack. I personally saw the film again on T.V. not too long ago, and when I found this cd was available, I simply ordered it (I had bought a long time ago the LP version, which only had 10 tracks).
This can be counted as one of the great soundtracks of that era, together with others such as "Superfly", "Shaft" or "Saturday Night Fever". The more recent "Jackie Brown" goes in the same direction actually. But, the originality of this one is that the whole soundtrack was apparently recorded BEFORE the shooting of the film (the songs were really playing while the film was shot, and the actors seem to have the time of their life), and that the band was made up by Norman Whitfield especially for this recording. The songs were so great and the band was so successful that it went on to record more albums and competed on the charts with CHIC. In fact, I can tell you the film was shown everywhere in Europe and that "Car wash" and the ballad "I wanna get next to you" were played all over the world... Not bad for what some would call a low budget film with a made up band playing in the background.
This really is a recommendable cd because of the story behind it, because of the sound (typical of that time), and because you have more than the two star tracks ("Zig Zag" and "Water" are super instrumentals, "Yoyo" is a lot of fun, the Ohio Players like "Born to love you" should have gotten the same recognition as the title track, and the musical scene - "Daddy rich/you gotta believe"- with Richard Pryor and the Pointer Sisters is extraordinary).
Car wash, ladies and gentlemen, a must have from a band and a producer (Norman Whitfield) in full bloom at that time !

I absolutely loved this CD very much!!! Fantastic songs from the Disco era like 'Car Wash' (that song never gets old!); 'I'm Going Down' is another classic/beautiful love song that never gets old!!! I loved 'You Gotta Believe' from the fabulous and beautiful sisters The Pointer Sisters (they were great in the movie/the song had a great message!) I also loved 'Keep On Keepin' On' (the title alone is very inspirational); 'Daddy Rich'/'Richard Pryor Dialogue/Rich Reprise' was good as well as '6 O'clock DJ (Let's Rock)' was another good song as well as 'Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is', 'Zig Zag' 'You're On My Mind', 'Yo Yo', 'Mid Day DJ Theme', 'Sunrise', 'Righteous Rhythm', 'Water', 'Crying' as well as 'Doin' What Comes Naturally' were good songs as well but my favorite song is 'I Wanna Get Next To You' because it reminds me of falling in love and being with that 'special someone'! Overall, excellent CD to sing along and dance to!
