The writing style has not really changed much between books which was one of the things I was hoping to see. It's not a bad style so much as a changeable one, with some fabulously well written sections and humorous comments that made me smile while others were, again, quite dramatised and bordering on childish. This wasn't always the case, otherwise the book would have been out the window pretty quickly but sometimes I just did despair a little of how quite interesting parts were reduced to flick-through material to move on hastily. This might be attributed to, like the prequel (Abducting Abby), we jump from scene to scene with new problems cropping up one after the other. To a certain extent because you know what happens with Abby and Zoran in book 1, half of book 2 is just the same stuff from a different angle and is just playing catch up to get to their own unique parts. This could make it interesting by the time we get to book four/five when the progression from Abby, Cara, Trisha will probably be condensed into a rushed portion of the book - a fatal downfall to introducing five female characters for five males at exactly the same time.
Since I've focussed heavily on the negative parts it is only fitting to say that I really do like some of the things that go down between Cara and Trelon even though things escalate quite quickly. I like how we get to see more of their world and learn of the Valdier culture, citizens and their tenuous relationships with the other alien species. I still believe the whole principles of the Valdier species, their Symbiots, technology etc is extremely clever and creative. The descriptive quality of the book is really good in places where it really counts, the author does a good job of throwing in character attributes and appearances and I was relieved that the concept of the symbiots and dragon shifters as a whole was more thoroughly covered; the first book in the series did leave the reader having to go along with some things that weren't quite sufficiently explained.
So, 4/5 starts, quite generous in some places and deserved in others. Still planning on reading the other books, with a little bit of dubiousness but I'm also quite eager to get down to learning more about the characters, the Valdier and the world of dragon shifters!
I agree with one US reviewer regarding the grammatical and other errors.. Susan still has a problem with tenses and where to put "too"and "to" plus redundant commas. This, at least, makes a change from the redundant apostrophe we normally see in books. I do not agree with her view of the rest of the book, however and love strong alien, alpha males who immediately know their mate when they see or possibly smell her. If only it were true!
I really enjoyed this book and will be reading the rest of the series as, despite the avoidable errors, I love Susan Smith's writing as she does not simply write a book full of sex but builds up her characters well and expands her plots with plenty of action and judicious amounts of loving.
the fact that i preceded to spend the amount of money i spent on to buy all of her books, should tell you what i think of her/his writing. i just wish i had them all to read again for the first time. :)
In turn, Cara, Tricia, Ariel and Carmen meet warriors whose attitudes annoy each character. The men are not used to independent women who teach them a few painful lessons. Lots of comedy moments as well as kidnappings before all issues are resolved. Can't wait to read the rest of the books in this series. Highly recommended.
