I enjoyed "King Kong vs Gigantosaurs" by this author. This book, which is the first of the trilogy but written second though, reads like a typical Toho Studio's Modern Samurai film with a strong female lead which really isn't too bad. However, by reading the middle work of the trilogy first.I was set for another Kaiju battle not as in the Bourne stories a rouge agent with a little bit of Harry Palmer thrown in.
I don't know if its the translation, or the author's obsession with Yuriko's eyes. However, there must be a hundred references to her "bowl shaped eyes" in this book. Take them all out and the book would be fifty pages shorter. A comment another person also made on a Facebook Page: "Godzilla, King of the Monsters" after I strongly recommended "Kong".
Read the replies below that clarified for me the author's not "obsession" with Kumage's eyes, but love of the actress he has dedicated the work too. I was amazed to realize she was the lead in two of my favorite later "Gojira" films: "Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla II" and its direct sequel "Tokyo:S.O.S." which deal with the soul of Godzilla and as strong a character, no not as strong, as Captain Yuriko Kumage.
So strangely this fan of Godzilla and Toho Studios since a boy of nine actually had my first impression and title for this review dead on.
The work gives us the background of Yuriko Kumage in a world that pits East against East with the West in the middle in the form of "Max" before that encounter with "The Eighth Wonder of the World". It also will take you into rage and revenge as Kumage learns the secrets of who she is and the reader follows her bloody road to self discovery.
