　ライオネル・リッチーは良い声とすぐれたフィーリングを持った歌手だと、今回聴き返して思います。
　マイケル・ジャクソンと人気を二分するブラック・コンテンポラリーのトップ・スターに相応しい人物だったと改めて納得する思いです。
　しかし、バックの音が最悪です。きめが粗くて安っぽい音色のシンセサイザーと、遮二無二先を急ぐようなテンポ。やはり彼がこの"Can't Slow Down"と"Say You Say Me”をメガ・ヒットさせた後で引退してしまったのは、こう言う軽薄で大味なサウンド作る連中と、喜んで聴いている連中に嫌気がさしたからでしょう。
　このブルーレイ・オーディオもすぐ廃盤になってしまいましたが、高い金を払ってまで聴く価値はないと思います。そんな金があったらサム・クックやマーヴィン・ゲイを買って聴いた方が百倍ましです。

１９８３年カナダ・QUALITY RECORDSプレスの所謂カット盤です。カナダ製のレコードは音質やプレスの悪い物が時々有るのですが、これは大丈夫。ジャケットの切り込みさえ気にならなければアナログをお持ちでない方にお勧めです。因みにこのQUALITY RECORDSは最近の高音質盤アナログの制作をしているあのQUALITY RECORDSと同一メーカーなのでしょうか？ノイズが少ない丁寧なカッティング・プレスのレコードです。

ライオネル・リッチーではこれが一番です。流石、グラミー賞最優秀アルバム賞と最優秀プロデューサー賞を受賞しただけあります。"All Night Long"と"Hello"がシングルとしては全米No.1になっていますが、それよりも私は"Penny Lover"、"Love Will Find A Way"や"The Only One"の方が好きですね。特に"Love Will Find A Way""The Only One"なんかは、車の中で聞きながら、つい、一緒に歌ってしまいます（笑）。"Penny Lover"も頭から離れません。

この頃ノリにノってたライオネルの時代を代表する一枚。　私が Best　Hit を観始めた頃にヒットしていたのが【8】　　その悲しげで美しいバラードをシングルで購入し聴き入ってました。　名曲ですね。　今聴いても胸が締めつけられる思いがします。　当時の記憶が鮮明に甦るほど　思い入れのある曲です。　Radio & Records のチャートでは 2位止まりでしたが他では 1位になったんじゃないかな。　1位になったと言えば【4】が Radio・・・のチャートではトップに輝きました。　カントリー・フレーヴァー溢れるスロウ・ナンバー。　当時この地味な曲が 1位になるのが理解出来なかった私は「きっと繰り上がりだろう・・・」とか思ってましたがこの時期の彼にはそれほどの勢いがあったのだと思います。　実際今聴くと良い曲だと思えますね。　大人になった（笑）　シングルになった【3】は好きでしたね。　ムード満点のアレンジが心地よいセンス良い仕上がりのナンバー。　大半をスロウな曲で構成されてるアルバムなので　【1】【2】【7】のテンポ良い曲が際立ってくるのは必然で【2】のアフリカンな雰囲気を持つ軽快な日本盤のタイトル曲（原題は【1】）とスリリングでカッコいいナンバー【7】はヒットしました。　ライオネルと言えば ”バラード ” というイメージがあるけどこのテのダンス・ナンバーもいいですね。　勿論【5】の AOR ないい雰囲気のミディアム・ナンバーやシットリとした優しげなメロディアス・バラードの【6】などいい感じのスロウ・ナンバーも用意してくれてます。　【6】を聴いていて「なんかデヴィッド・フォスターっぽいな〜」と思ったらやはり彼の手掛けた作品だった。　彼のテイスト溢れる好ナンバーに仕上がってる。　オープニングのアルバム・タイトル・ナンバーはノリノリのビート・トラックだが私としてはもっとコモドアーズ時代にやっていたようなバリバリのファンクも入れて欲しかったなァ〜。　まぁ全体を通して聴けばこのアルバム・カラーには合わなそうだけどね。　センス良くまとまった作品だからこそ大ヒットしたのでしょう。　ブラック・ミュージックの枠をこえてこんなに素敵なアルバムを作ったライオネルはその才能をこの後も披露するのだがこの作品の輝きには追いつけない。　まさに 80年代を代表するマスター・ピースだ。　名曲【8】をライオネルは収録するかどうか迷ってたらしい。　奥さんに「いいじゃん！」と薦められて収録を決めたそうだ。　奥さんに感謝です！　でなければこの名曲に逢えなかったから・・・

アルバムとして非常に優れているので、ベスト版などよりもはるかに聴きがいがある。
全米Ｎo.1ヒットとなった「All Night Long」「Hello」も名曲だが、個人的には「Running With The Night」が好きだった。
非常にテンポがよい曲で、聴いていると活力がみなぎってくるようだった。
この頃の洋楽は素晴らしい物が多く、心の支えとになる名曲ばかりである。

By the beginning of 1983, Lionel Richie was already a star because of his years with The Commodores and due to the success of his solo debut album in 1982. But Richie wasn't cool with resting on his past success, he wanted to keep working. So out comes his second album Can't Slow Down (1983). The title of his second solo album isn't just the name of one of the songs on the album, the album's title also serves as an apt description of the pace that Richie was on during the 1981 to 1986 period. In that six-year period Richie put out three albums that were huge hits and which had him promoting those albums all over the world.

Can't Slow Down was a slick and richly produced album that was set up to make Richie one of the biggest recording artists of the 1983 to 1985 period. The success of this album helped him get on the 1985 We Are the World Tour, a tour that was comprised of the biggest and brightest recording artists of the early to mid 1980s period.

Can't Slow Down was a mixture of soft love songs, sweet love ballads, up-tempo dance songs, and some songs that were ready made for the radio. Richie, his beat producers, the writers on this album and of course his record label Motown Records wanted this album to be a huge crossover hit and it was.

My favorite song on the album was track four, Stuck on You. That song is a marvelous song that was set up to appeal to country music lovers or just music fans who have good taste in music.

Pros of Can't Slow Down: Every culture on the planet in the 1983-1984 period (the albums' original run and hype period) could find something to like about this album. There are songs on the album for Blacks, whites, Latinos, and etc. When you're trying to be a crossover recording artist this is the type of album you make.

Cons of Can't Slow Down: There was not one song on this album that was a straight up R&B song, and that's something. Richie sure has a soulful R&B voice, but by the 1980s Richie was moving away from the R&B game. In the 1980s Richie was more concerned with richly produced and glossy pop love ballads an up-tempo pop songs, and that was what made him a superstar solo artist and what made him a lot of money. It was a formula that worked for him.

In conclusion, Can't Slow Down was a huge hit back in its day because of Richie's soulful and radio friendly singing voice, some cool music videos, and because of the prevalence of top notch beat producers on the album.

'Can't Slow Down' is a must-have 80s album and is strong throughout / no weak filler songs. The reason for my review is to address the new format release in Blu-ray audio*.

This is uncompressed 24bit/96kHz material that excels the experience of listening to the original LP on my dad's turntable. The dynamics and stereo separation on the record and blu ray are fabulous. The blu ray distinguishes itself with added presence and soundstage and above all, clarity. Lionel's voice is lifelike and passionate. You can easily pick out individual bass and drum rhythms. Backing vocals, horns, synthesizers and guitars seem to float in and out surrounding the seductive vocals in a warm embrace. The instrumentations are lush. This music feels ALIVE!!! Its hard not to get up and dance to the beat on the title track. Steve Lukather's guitar solo in 'Running with the Night" is top drawer! (although it could've been brought more to the fore in the mix.)

A few of the talents involved with this album include David Foster, Richard Marx and half of TOTO.

NOTE: To really appreciate this slickly produced sound you need a good pair of full range speakers, a good quality amp that will decode one or more of the following: PCM / DTS-HD / DOLBY TrueHD (all 3 of these are 24bit/96kHz) and a blu ray player.

You can also enjoy this on a computer with good speakers, blu-ray drive and a 24 bit sound card. (ie. Audigy or other high end sound card supporting 96kHz/24 bit sources)

Also, the blu-ray includes a passcode to download the album audio tracks albeit in a compressed 320 kbps MP3 digital format from the web. (So you can have inferior to CD quality for itunes or your portable collection)

*(hi-res formats like Blu-Ray Audio, SACD, DVD-A, & flac files capture the nuances (high frequencies and rich tones) of recorded music that can be lost when converting from the original analog recording to the digital domain. (for example SACDs create an analogue-like wave pattern which more closely resembles the sound from the original source than say, a 16 bit CD could.)
