I wondered if a new amplifier could sound as good as my Marantz. I had tried a new model Marantz a few years earlier and thought it sounded good but never loved it like my vintage Marantz. Then one day I saw the CXA60 online while researching new integrated amplifiers and it caught my eye. It had a silver faceplate reminiscent of my classic Marantz and What HiFi said it was one of the best amps in its price class. Not living near a proper hifi shop, I was unable to audition the CXA60 in person so I had to order it without ever hearing it. I figured I could always return it if I didn't like it.
Now that I have the CXA60 in my home I can share my impressions. First of all this is one good looking amplifier. It's got a very minimalist design which may not be for everyone, but I find it very handsome. If Apple were to design an integrated amplifier, I imagine it would look something like this amp. The floating design is unique and makes the CXA60 a stand out. Also the vents on top of the amp look very sleek and glow blue when the amp is powered on.
As for the sound, let's just say the Marantz 2238 has now been sold. I didn't think anything would top the sound of my lovely Marantz but this Cambridge amp gives it a run for its money. The CXA60 makes listening to music a joy and the 60 watts is more than enough for my small listening space. I never have the volume up past half way. I know this sounds cliche, but I am hearing things in my music I never heard before. The CXA60 is paired with a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 10.1 bookshelf speakers and it sounds very good. One thing I notice that is better than my vintage amp is the stereo separation / sound stage. The CXA60 creates a realistic soundstage where one can close their eyes and clearly hear were each musician is on the imaginary stage in front of them.
The CXA60 has lots of connections including a few digital ones (something that my old Marantz didn't have) which allows me to connect my music streamer and CD player to the great sounding DAC built into the CXA60. The CXA60 doesn't have a phono input but this is easily remedied by purchasing an external phono amp (I picked up a Cambridge CP1). Vinyl sounds amazing on the CXA60 through my ProJect debut carbon DC turntable.
The CXA60 also has a very good headphone output. I do most of my listening at night and so an amp with a headphone jack is important to me. I wish Cambridge Audio had included a quarter inch headphone output but it sounds great and pushes my Sennheiser HD600s nicely. The CXA60 has tone controls but they are very subtle. This is one area where my vintage Marantz trounces the CXA60. The old Marantz had three tone controls (mid, treble, bass) and rotating them made a substantial difference in the output. Cambridge takes a different approach in regard to tone controls. With the CXA60 (as with most modern amps) you only get bass and treble controls and honestly they do very little on the CXA60. It is my understanding that tone controls are somewhat looked down upon by audiophiles and only there to minimize harsh sounds on true audiophile amps. The good news is the CXA60 sounds fantastic without tone controls so I don't find myself missing the Marantz controls often.
The CXA60 has been a great addition to my audio set up and an amp that will probably stay with me for many years. This amp draws me to it every time I see it and what I intend to be a short listening session ends up with me spending hours in front of the amp. I highly recommend this amplifier to anyone considering it.
I do also connect a turntable to one of the analog inputs using the phono preamp mentioned earlier as this unit does not have it built in.
The chassis is heavy and very well put together -- it is very simple / spartan looking but nice. It does kick out a little heat so will need a little space above it if you're putting it onto a shelf.
So, I have this running into a pair of B&W CM1 S2 speakers and in my opinion it's a good match (I'm keeping everything small, remember?). When I turn it up, the sound fills out nicely and there is absolutely no strain and a lot of nice punch. Even my wife, who couldn't care less about such trivial things, was surprised by the great sound this little unit is getting out.
I think people need to remember (or hear for the first time) what a good, solid, simple stereo system sounds like and this is a great way to do so without going crazy money and space-wise.
What a shame as this unit cannot be purchased in Mexico so I got this on a trip to US hopping that I finally will have a hifi equipment for Christmas.
Was really excited about this model because of the excellent reviews I saw all over the internet.
