The Ames Piano Quartet are as fine an ensemble as I've heard, with playing of the highest quality. The recording is also excellent.
The six works on this double CD were all unknown to me. However, it's fair to say that they have been very well chosen and there is not a weak piece amongst them. Other reviewers have gone into detail about each piece, so I won't repeat what they have said, except to agree that the quartet by Alexander Mackenzie is a really outstanding work. I can well understand why the Ames Quartet chose to make this the first item in the collection. I shall be returning to it frequently.
I cannot recommend this double CD highly enough. It is a truly rewarding experience.
