　1964年のアラバマの田舎町に暮らす12才の少年の1年間を描いた小説です。

　大洪水あり、愛犬や親友の死、不思議な能力を持った黒人老婆など、内容は盛沢山で、少年が考え成長する様がありありと描かれています。

　最初に大事件が発生し、最後にその事件の真相が明らかになり劇的な結末を迎えるというミステリーも盛り込まれていて、こちらも第一級の内容だと思いました。

　グレシャムのPainted Houseと同じような印象を受ける、とても優れた小説だと思います。

少年時代にタイムスリップする感覚を味わえる作品です。少年時代に感じたわくわく感やドキドキ感がまざまざとよみがえってきます。やや冗長な感じもしますが、物語のところどころにドキドキするような場面がちりばめられていますし、ラストシーンもなかなかのものです。英語は平易ですので、ペーパーバック初心者でも大丈夫です。

　60年代のアラバマの田舎町、暮らしは楽ではないけれど正直に働いている父親たちがいて、
街角にビーチボーイズが流れ、学校が終わると親友たちと自転車で駆けめぐり、
胸をときめかせる少女がいて、乱暴者の悪ガキがいて…。
　一応、殺人事件が軸になっていますが、それが本筋というよりも、
そうした日々のなかで、貧困を知り、差別を知り、戦争の影を知り、人間の弱さと醜さを知り、
少年が大人になっていく物語です。
　Stand by Me やThe Bottomsに胸をきゅんとさせた人にはたまらない世界かもしれません。
あるいは　king　とLansdale との筆力との差を感じる方もいるでしょうか。
　個人的な感想としては、ノスタルジックな表現が冗長で、
細切れのエピソードがてんこ盛りすぎで、ちょっと胃がもたれる感じでした。
新聞連載だったのかもしれませんね。

少年の視点を通して描かれる1年間に起こる様々な出来事。読み続ける中で浮かび上がるのは、BoyからYoung manへ成長する主人公や家族愛、地域社会の有機的な繋がり等で、マキャモン一流の緻密な構成と彫りの深い人物像によって、ぐっと引き込まれてしまった。
｢大人｣になった私たちや、軸が細くなった現代社会の忘れ物が集合している様に思えた。

　たまたま駅前の古本屋の店頭に積まれていたペーパーバックの山の中から見つけた一冊でしたが、これがどうしてなかなか、面白いのなんのって。わずか一年の間に主人公の少年の身に起こった怪事件の顛末を、時にユーモアをまじえ、時に幻想をまじえながら描いた長編小説です。

　誰しも少年時代には世の中が、大人の理屈では割り切れないような不可思議な姿を伴って見えるものです。そんな自分自身のあの頃を思い出しながら、ぐいぐい引き込まれて一気に読み通しました。年の初めに起こった事件がその年の終わりに解き明かされていくのですが、その間に少年が一歩大人へと近づいていく姿に読み手は自らを重ねていくことができます。

　主人公の少年が大人になって故郷を再訪する場面が描かれている最終章はなかなか粋ですよ。

　McCammonの書く英語はとても平易です。この本は600頁近くありますが、ペーパーバック初心者でも臆することなく挑戦できます。なお、もう一冊McCammonの小説を英語で読んでみたいというかたには「 Mine 」を強くお勧めします。

少年少女期のキラキラして大切だったものが思い出される作品

『ボーイズ・ライフ』ホラー作家マキャモンの異色の作品。ホラーが苦手な人でも、抵抗なく読める。ストーリーは、作者マキャモン自身の回想記だろうか？　と思わせる書き出しで、ある作家の十代にさしかかったばかりの少年時代を振り返った話だ。牛乳配達する父親と少年コーリーが、殺された男の体が湖に沈んで行くのを目撃するところからストーリーは始まる。アメリカの小さな町を舞台にした人々との触れ合いや様々な出来事が、フィクションだと分かりつつも、「十代の純粋な少年の目には実際にそう映ったに違いない」と思わずにはいられない。またコーリーと友人たちとの関わりも爽やかで、読んでいて古き良きアメリカを感じさせられる。目撃した父の苦悩、コーリーにつきまとってくる恐怖が浮き沈みし、最後に意外な知人が殺人犯だったことが判明する。スリリングなストーリー展開で、先を読み進まずにはいられなくなる。少年少女期のキラキラして大切だったものが思い出され、自分の十代の頃に引き戻された様な気がした。私の息子たちにも、是非読ませたい一冊。

I first read this book 20 years ago shortly after the death of my husband, and I never forgot it. It helped to lift me, I remembered feeling comforted but couldn't remember why so now being in a very happy time of my life I decided to read it again. I am so glad I did, as once again it worked its magic. There is a story theme running through the quite long book, but at heart it is the story of a boy in small town America in the 1960's. You are pulled into the world of the boy and his friends, the fantasies, the mysteries, the adventure all bounded by the safety of loving families and a small community. It made me smile, it certainly brought tears to my eyes, all so beautifully written that I lost all sense of reading and simply saw the scenes laid out before me. This book has gone on to my bookshelf and there it will stay, I will not part with it again.

A novel that many folk may well be familiar with but one that had somehow escaped my attention. Although the author wrote this over twenty years ago, it is only in recent months that I've been made aware of it's existence. It's not easily available but I managed to track down a second-hand copy via Amazon. Written from a young boys perspective, it's a story set in south Alabama in the early 1960's. Its essentially the fictional autobiography of 12 year old Cory Mackenson and, among other things, its about the pleasures and pains of being young. The story can be enjoyed by teenagers and adults alike. This is a fantastic book and one that reminded me of (a) what it was like to be a kid and (b) why reading can be such a joy. I have no hesitation in awarding this book 5 stars and would encourage any avid reader to add this novel to their 'wish list'.

The first 250-300 pages of Boy's Life are simply wonderful, with McCammon creating a lovingly described town (Zephyr) inhabitted by "real" characters. I was certain halfway through the novel that I'd be awarding it my first 5-star review. The life of an eleven-year old and his family, friends and acquaintences, plus the described joy of living in a beautiful and slightly dark small town are described with wit and humour rarely seen in the horror genre.

But then things began to go awry, with events that were at first easily overlooked despite their failings because the rest of the novel had been so rivetting. However, these circumstances then contrived by their frequency to rob the book of its earlier joy, and I got the impression that McCammon couldn't wait to finish it. While the first half of the book had been written with great care, I felt that much of the remainder was comparatively weak and knocked off in order to reach a deadline. Perhaps McCammon just lost interest and wanted to get on with a new idea? Who knows.

I give it 4 stars because of those first 250-odd pages (5-star mateial), but am disappointed that while it's a superior horror novel, it doesn't ultimately rise beyond that genre and become something more profound, as it had been on course to do. Like Vernon Thaxter's book, a great character-study of small-town America has been tainted by some pretty poorly tacked-on fantasy.

As always McCammon delivers, I have not read a novel of his that I didn't enjoy. The characters are well thought out and there is always a feeling they have some deeper hidden ability, which gives the reader a chance to subconsciously think up extra scenarios. The descriptions in the book that made me smile are the love of a bike with a strong will and protective spirit, the dream train monsters, a vampire, a mummy and Frakenstiens monster who show Corey that the grass is not always greener and a simple Christmas present of a signed picture from Vincent Price something I would myself cherish greatly! Like the lake depicted in the book, McCammon always pulls you in and drags you down deeper until you get to the end and find the conclusion with a satisfied gurgle.

This is a wonderful book, I loved it. It put me in mind of early Stephen King and other memorable books like Dan Simmons Summer of Night and Ronald Malfi The Narrows. It was better than any of those in that the story has real heart and soul, a real sense of place, and a classic depiction of a small town and the characters in it. Highly recommend.
