"Starting your career as a massage therapist just got easier! If there had been such a valuable handbook when I was starting out 17 years ago, I would have saved precious time and gained serious advantage over my competition. Kayse Gehret's informal, experienced voice is a great way to get across the information you need to be better in your new work. If this handy book isn't part of every beginning therapist's schoolbag, then those who do get it will be way ahead of the game. I had to laugh out loud many times as I read the book and recognized some silly thing I did years ago or how I could have handled a situation better if I'd known beforehand what to expect. This is a savvy, well-written, easy to implement manual with valuable insights and excellent direction to help you do the right thing the first time, saving you valuable months - even years - to become the best Massage Therapist you can be." This book is really for beginners in a career in massage and doesn't really provide much in depth information.
The most important section on transference shows that the author really doesn't have any concept of what transference is in a massage session. She refers to it as when the massage therapists takes on the energy of a client. Well that is counter-transference and it isn't taking on the energy of the client or feeling what the client is feeling. The MT needs to be responsible for their own feelings. What they feel when working with clients are their own feelings.
Transference occurs in a relationship where there is a power differential that happens. In massage it starts from the minute a client thinks about getting a massage. The process of seeking help for a condition, stress or pain often resembles the parent/child relationship and that of being cared for by the parent. It is a subconscious process that occurs. It is not to be limited but allowed to be as that is where the real healing begins on much more than just a physical level. What allows healing to happen through the transference is having boundaries.
It probably isn't the authors fault that they don't understand it and just shows more of how the massage schools are not very helpful in teaching this aspect of being a massage therapist.
Kayse's book is OUTSTANDING at explaining and showing how to be sucessful as a massage therapist and ALL aspects of the massage therapy field. I AM REALLY IMPRESSED that Kayse has left NO stone unturned!!!! She has covered just about every aspect of massage therapy that one needs to know in a really clear and concise way while writing in a way that is also enjoyable to read. Kayse REALLY LOVES her work and it shows in this book, you can feel here joy and excitement for being a massage therapist and in being able to help others to make their businesses work. I don't think you can find a book that better covers how to be successful in the massage therapy field.
