If you're reading this I'd imagine you already know it's the second book and have read the first already.
I read this directly after reading the first and wasn't too sure what to expect. I wanted to know what would happen with various characters and where the story would lead. I have to say I was happy with the end result. It could have turned out quite predictable or run out of ideas after book 1 but it just got bigger and better.
There is more action, I'd say it was faster paced even though it's bigger. The story line is more intricate and it starts to become more than just another vampire tale. In my honest opinion the best vampire fiction will always cover off back stories for the eldest vampires spanning thousands of years. Not only does this happen in this book but there are several strains of vampire and it's not done in a cheesy way at all.
I read a lot and I always felt that Anne Rice as much as I'm not a fan of the person would be hard to beat with the Vampire Chronicles due to the level of detail in her work and back story she gave the vampires. I'm not claiming its been done here in a few books as there were ten chronicles some more than a 1000 pages however I feel that the reader gets as much out of it and it is written well enough that you're not left needing more information.
I hold high hopes for the third book in the series which I have just started. I doubt I'll be let down.
