It's another great idea from MacLean - we meet a disparate group of survivors leaving Singapore at just about the last minute. When MacLean is writing a sea story, you know you're in for something good.
Unfortunately, he lumbers the characters with an annoying spy-plot. Most, but not all, of MacLean's spy plots were ludicrously over the top, and this one is no exception. When he was writing adventure, naval or wartime stories, MacLean was the best of his generation, but his spy thrillers often read like OTT spoofs on the page.
Another weakness is that there are just too many characters, a large number of whom are introduced but then killed off anonymously (off-screen, as it where!) There are at least two characters who I don't remember reading about being killed off, but are just no longer there. And I wouldn't be able to tell you who's still alive at the end of the story.
It's a shame, because at times, this is better than The Guns Of Navarone or HMS Ulysses
