An example of forced musical evolution, one of J.D.'s finest albums finally gets some love. "Black Rose" found Souther stepping up his game after a disparaging remark from Joni Mitchell (something to the effect of he needed to get the quality of his music up to the level o fhis ego) and his affair and musical influence of Judee Sill created a desire to write more complex character driven songs.
"Black Rose" almost didn't get completed at least with Peter Asher as producer. J.D., as was often the case, didn't have enough material to complete the album. He had bits and pieces (which sounds like it's working method based on the comments in the booklet here and his first solo album where he also was told by David Geffen to "finish the album or don't") of material for an album. He put it all together and finished the material, the album and produced a masterpiece.
The mastering here is pretty good over all although there is use of peak limiting on the album.
Hats off to Omnivore for continuing to take risks and put out lesser known albums for deluxe reissues. The major labels have largely given up on doing these type of things except for inexpensive boxed sets. Omnivore along with Real Gone continue set the standard for these reissues.
Beyond the album proper we get a host of bonus tracks.
We get five demos including "Songs of Love" (band and solo demos), "Can Almost See It", "Border Town", "Texas Nights and Mexican Moon" (instrumental piano demo), "Cheek to Cheek" (from Lowell George's "Thanks, I'll Eat It Here" album) and a live version of "Faithless Moon".
The packaging includes a booklet that covers the history of the making of the album, complete credits. The packaging is a digipak (not my personal favorite but it's on nice cardboard stock).
