内容紹介

Son of a wealthy businessman, Caspar Goldstein has it easy — too easy. He's the star of the local racing scene, but while hobnobbing with his fans is fun, no amount of money or status can win him the Eisenstadt Autocarriage Cup. So when he stumbles over a new superfuel that could rocket him straight to the front of the pack, he can't resist appropriating a bit for himself. What could possibly go wrong?

Well… a lot, actually. Everybody wants to get their hands on a little black mercury, and Cas is in deep trouble. Pursued, hunted and forced into hiding, Cas needs all the help he can get. Luckily for him, he's not short of friends — but how can a crew of engineers, racecar drivers and talking pigeons hope to face down the deadliest of assassins and thieves?

Steampunk at it's best, with a hero that isn't a real brilliant bulb. Talking pigeons, auto-carriages, auto-gyros abound. Of course the women save the day, and are a arch villain. In perfect steampunk fashion the mix up of what is real in this reality leaves you guessing and wondering what is next. Clare and Hildy are the Favorites, while Cas while having an almost Victorian sense of right and wrong can't seem to pick the right choices no matter how hard Clare and Hildy try to steer him. The perils of Pauline have nothing on how many problems he falls into. This is not a quick read because there are so many twists, turns and just plain back ups but it is all entertaining. The ladies seem to have the most realistic brains of the bunch while the men run around half the time causing the problems, but isn't that what they generally do anyway? haha I laughed and could understand the urge to pull out your hair at some of the antics. The story centers around a floating Island in the sky, a substance called Black Mercury that everyone wants after a auto-gyro flies up to the Island, and of course Men want to control everything while the brains behind it all are the ladies that don't want to be submissive and controlled. It's suitable for all ages, as there isn't any sex you need to skip and the violence isn't overdone. Who doesn't want a drama of spies and s fight with the good guys and bad guys punching it out. The talking pigeons just ad comic relief and at the end sacrifice for the cause which is sad because you want them to have a happy ever after that the silly humans get. Any steampunk fan will be happy and any tween and ten can read without parents supervision, may need some explanation if they have never experienced steampunk but if they have no problem. Cartoons with damsels tied to train tracks basically with a hero that comes thru and up until the very end more interested in kissing his horse..

Book exchanged for an honest review:Eisenstadt is home to autocarriages, coilguns, autogyro, and lasting a drifting isle called Inselmond. The only thing that Caspar (Cas) Goldstein wanted to do is race autocarriages which earns him the stark disapproval from his father Max Goldstein. Cas's friend and fellow racer Lukas (Luk) Rosenthal is taken out of the upcoming Cup race much to Cas's dismay. Meanwhile Hildegard (Hildy) Goldstein has been working on secret projects and hoping to test a few of them out for herself. Clara Koh is Hildy's assistant unbeknownst to Max and distance relative to the Goldstein's. Both Hildy and Clara are hoping for more freedom to invent to their hearts content. They are drawn into a political games people play not caring what happens to anyone else. Cas is kidnapped for is knowledge of black mercury. Will Max always control Hildy and Cas? Who wants black mercury? Will Cas escape? Your answers await you in Black Mercury.

This second book could be read along side the first book because the tapestry is wonderful, fun, and adventurous. The book is carried out at the same time as the first book which can be a little confusing at times. The writing flowed well from one subject to another without any hasta. I'm definitely looking forward to the next installment in this series.

I was expecting a bit more with this story but it was still a good read. The characters in the story are all well described and there is plenty of action going on. The story is little drawn out but not so that you loose your place. Other than the items they have and the floating isle this story has a lot of things that most mysteries have. No real big differences to get the imagination going.Would recommend to teens or young adults.Given book in return for honest review!
