On this, her seventh album proper, Madonna once again shows that one of her greatest talents is her ability to choose collaborators who bring the best out of her. This time around, the producers and co-writers include Bjork, Nellee Hooper (Massive Attack/Soul II Soul) and swing deities Dallas Austin & Babyface (who, amongst a myriad of credits, were the men behind TLC's CrazySexyCool). Mellower in the most part than her previous work, the album includes the usual handful of hits in "Secret", "Human Nature", the title track, and "Take A Bow", a duet with Babyface which is as beautifully glum as anything she's done. While the period between the Erotica/Sex fiasco and her triumphant return with 1998's Ray Of Light was a comparatively lean period commercially for Madonna, this album is up there with the best of her work. --Ronita Dutta

90年代ポップR&Bの名盤

BabyfaceやDallas Austin、Dave Hall、Nellee Hooperをプロデュースに迎えたR&B中心のアルバム。

前作のEroticaにもR&B/HipHop的なトラックがいくつかあったものの、
ハウス畑のShep Pettiboneにはうまく消化しきれていない印象があった。
リアルなR&Bがポップスとしてチャートを席巻していた94年は、
そのジャンルの売れっ子プロデューサーを新たに起用する絶好のタイミングだったと言える。

4人とも実に素晴らしい仕事をしており、全曲に聴きどころがあるが、
シングル以外では、重たいビートとMeshell Ndegeocelloのベース、ラップが気持ち良いI'd Rather Be Your Lover、
80年代のキャッチーなMadonnaをDallas Austin流に料理したDon't Stop、
Madonnaのキュートな声が聴けるミディアムR&BのInside of meなど、前半が特に充実。

後半は少しダークな雰囲気を纏って、スロウなForbidden Love、Love Tried to Welcome Meなども心地よく、
Ray of Light以降の流れを予感させるタイトル曲、
ここから大きな落差を伴ってバラードTake A Bowで締める流れも面白い。

余談ですが、初回盤のジャケットは、寝そべったマドンナの顔が上向きにされた間違いジャケットでした。
以降、マドンナの意図した写真の向きを逆さにしたデザインのジャケットに変更されました。
このアルバムは時々棚から取り出して聞きたくなります。

デビュー当時は、黒人だと思われていたというエピソードは有名ですが
マドンナとブラックミュージックの相性は本当にいいと思う。

デジタル・ダンスミュージックでガンガンやってればとりあえず喜ぶような層もファンとして抱え込んでしまっているためか
ハードキャンディという素晴らしく楽しいアルバムがあまり評価されていない気もするし
ハードキャンディからのシングルカットも、もっとブラック色の強い曲の方がヒットしたのでは？と思ってしまう。

ヴォーグ・レイオブライト・ミュージックのシングルヒットは、
このアルバムからヒットしたベイビーフェイスの影がまとわりつきそうなテイク・ア・バウ
よりも自信になったのだろうし
ビョーク・ネリーフーパーらのトリップホップと共存しているのも
アルバム「ベッドタイムストーリーズ」のミソであることも確かであるため
だからなおさらマドンナ本人も、自分はＥＤＭだと決め込んでしまっているのかもしれず
ちょっと残念な気がしています。

マドンナもあと何枚アルバムを出せるかわからない年齢に差し掛かってきたので（笑）
自分とブラックの相性の良さを定期的に思い出して、これからも出してもらいたいなと思います。

そんな、貴重な一枚。

サラッと一聴すると、何の変哲もないポップミュージックだが、
大衆性と先鋭性のスリルあるせめぎ合いを果たしつつ、実は心憎いばかりに計算されつくしたサウンド・プロダクション。
知的に抑制されながらも、聴き込むほどに味のある中毒性の高いメロディ。
寝室でふたり向き合うようなリラックスモードの設定で、実際おしゃれなカフェなんかで流れていても何の違和感もないが、
その裏にはマドンナの鉄の意思がみなぎり、アルバムの冒頭から終わりまで終始一貫したコンセプトに貫かれた、完璧なまでのクオリティコントロール。

高校生の時に、リアルタイムで初めてマドンナのアルバムに接したのだが、それは片田舎の高校生に洋楽文化の衝撃を与えるに十分なものだった。マドンナに対し、ちょっとエキセントリックで必要以上にスキャンダラスなアイドル歌手。
というような浅い認識しかなかった自分は、この作品にはまったのをきっかけに、一気に洋楽の世界に目覚めていったのだ。

日本の音楽にはどうしても出せない雰囲気。
録音や演奏といった技術的な問題なのか、国民性の違いという問題なのか。
もちろんどちらがいい悪いという話ではないが、こういう当たり前の顔をしつつ、クールで刺激的で、
何気なく普通の生活に入り込んで大きな影響力を発揮していくような作品。っていうものには日本ではあまりお目にかかれず、
それゆえ自分も含めた多くの人は、あまり言葉も分からないような海外の作品を熱心に聴いているのだろう。

なんて事を、１０何年振りにこの作品を聴いて思ったりした。
９０年代クラブミュージックの隠れた名盤。

Let me be clear from the get-go. I'm not a vinyl Nazi, or a snobby audiophile. I like good music. I like good audio gear. I like it to sound good (to me). Everyone hears differently, the sound I like may be offensive to others ears. Everything doesn't have to sound perfect. It is after all vinyl...( HA HA !)... a perfectly imperfect playback media. Saying that, when vinyl is done right, the sound quality can be astonishing.. as in off the charts good; emotionally and physically moving,.. involving..., bringing smiles, frowns, cheers, and even tears. EMOTION, in todays digital driven streaming world!

Moving on to the initial LP purchase, the replacement, return, arrival of subsequent replacement, which is yet another bad copy. Why did I ask for a replacement copy(s)? I'll try and explain.

I purchased the first vinyl copy of Bedtime Stories, first week June 2021. About two weeks later it was delivered on June 25 2021. FYI, this is a current re-pressing of the very good 2015 180-gram 25th Anniversary re-release. Both are pressed by Optimal Media, a well though of record pressing plant IMO The same stampers are being used for the current reissue as was used in the 2015 release. Obviously these are all reissues of the original 1994 Bedtime Stories release. Optimal Media consistently presses some of the flattest, quietest, best sounding vinyl made today. Optimal, Pallas, and RTI are all among the best pressing plants globally . I personally consider them to be about even overall, based on many vinyl purchases from each facility and others as well.

Below are some of the defects I noted.

Both album sides were VERY DIRTY, covered in paper, dust and other environmental dirt which will scratch the surfaces, and make the LP generally noisy as well as unpleasant to listen to. This release was not even close to clean, or as clean as the typical release from Optimal is known to be.

The inner sleeve is made from a heavy glossy paper, the vinyl sandwiched between 2 sides of stiff, glossy paper, with a VERY tight fit. Between the material used and overly tight fit in the inner sleeve, it is not an ideal place to park high quality 180 gram pressing, or any LP for storage for that matter. The inner sleeve choice is not Optimal's fault. Whoever arranged the pressing vinyl deal for Maverick/ Warner/Sire. and Optimal chose the cover and inner sleeve used.

A Pet Peeve. Anything pressed 180 or more grams anywhere today should automatically feature rice-paper or equivalent inner sleeves to protect the vinyl. Really all vinyl new should come in rice paper sleeves, but that's not going to happen. The glossy card stock inner sleeves or often attractive, but are really nasty dust-dirt magnets which tend to be be abrasive when removing and replacing the vinyl records. Include the original inner sleeves but put the vinyl in the rice paper, the way premium represses do. The act of installing and removing the vinyl record from the inner sleeve, whether at the factory or by the user, can cause a lot of audible damage to the vinyl surfaces. It creates: pops, ticks, skips, audible defects, scuffs and even the dreaded " swish" sound, as the vinyl spins during play. Static build up from paper inserts is another big issue that rice paper inner sleeves eliminate. MOST of the time, you can carefully remove the LP from the offending heavy paper inner sleeves, using some BLACK ART and magic phrases .. without doing any / more damage to the LP, before you place them in the new inner sleeves.

After dealing with the dirt, I performed a thoroughly wet clean using a full cycle RCM with my homebrew secret sauce record cleaning potion. This got rid of a lot of the noise causing detritus, but there were still audible issues.

Mold release compound or some other vinyl surface contaminate was on the first LP You could see the oily sheen on the vinyl surface itself The ear is treated to the dreaded "SWISH", on Side One. Side 2 was better, the surface noise issues are less pronounced. Another 10 minute deep clean using the trusty VPI RCM removed the contamination noise. BUT, the last track "Take A Bow", the vinyl itself suffered from non-fill noise on the last 45 seconds of the track So I ordered a replacement copy of the LP.

The replacement was sent an received in short order from Amazon. Kudos on them for getting me a replacement in less than a week! The replacement copy didn't have the non-fill issue on "Take A Bow" ( or anywhere else!) but it does have multiple audible physical defects on both sides i.e.: the "heavy swish sound". Static, repeating pops from surface or groove damage, audible scuffs or scratches from handling., On inspection under LED lighting there is a piece of paper, 7 or so grooves in diameter, less the 2 inches from the start of the LP. In other words the size of a large quilting pin head (not point) is pressed into the vinyl itself.. BOTH SIDES, but not in the same place!.

This is something you cannot clean away, or would want to live with.

It is definitely NOT Amazon's fault for either copy,. Given the price of records today from a PREMIUM pressing facility, quality control average should be better than 0/2. Between the noise the sound quality is very very good. KUDOS to whoever mixed the file or tape used for the material. Sonically I dig the LP's sound. It's smooth, clean and powerful, but mixed at a somewhat lower level to prevent overloading the cutter head. Side one total time comes in at 21 minutes and change, Side 2 comes in at around 29 minutes, very LONG for an LP side. The average is much less that 24 minutes. Some sides are as little as 15 minutes.
This should be pressed on 2 LP's at 33 1/3 or better yet at 45 RPM . Plenty of real estate to cut with 4 sides. People will pay for a 2 LP 4 sided 33 or 45 RPM. People will pay for quality, especially on vinyl.

Amazon has done what they will do. I guess after replacing the first LP with another defective copy they decided not to send another replacement copy. Perhaps there is an issue with this run of albums. Amazon typically keeps sending replacement copies until you receive a good one. Perhaps their LP exchange policy has changed?

Either way, I am perturbed that Amazon elected to just give me a refund,. At this point, I'd rather have a decent copy of the LP, and not just the money back. It is a great sounding LP, with defects aside. I'd like to think that the 2 defective copies are just a fluke, but perhaps Amazon knows something more, which is why they are not sending out an another copy.

I'm going to contact customer support, and see if I can get another copy, hopefully not defective. I'll amend this review based on the results of that conversation once I know more.

Overall, I give this album 3 stars. If it didn't have all the audible defects it would easily be 5 stars. If I can get a decent copy it might yet make 5 stars! Stay Tuned!

Arrivato nei tempi prestabiliti. Disco che amo di Madonna con canzoni del tipo “Secret” che non sono le sue caratteristiche, sono una madonna nuova post erotica. Confezione secondo me da arricchire un pochino come il design del cd che non mi piace molto. Master ottimo. Unica pecca la copertina che non è quella che è nella foto.
