We had never seen a design like this and we needed a really inconspicuous gate for our stair well. This was perfect. It blends in well and we've beven had compliments on how it hides when not in use. I love that I don't have to lean it up against a wall and listen to it crash on the floor, or wrestle it into a closet. It just retracts nearly unnoticed and is ready immediately when I need it.
We have 6 kids and 4 adults in the house and this gate gets opened and closed probably dozens of times a day. I'm impressed with the durability. It hasn't gotten wobbly and the mechanism seems as sturdy as day 1.
My 13 month old also likes to pull up and look over. This thing holds so well. It has an accordion style so the wall flexes back and forth just an inch or so. It is perfect. It holds him really well. The hinges don't pinch his fingers and I don't have to stress about it. I love that.
I always thought gates were so annoying I avoided them when possible. This one though actually is a pleasure. Works on my Labrador too who figured out how to unlatch our other gate! Bonus!
Definitely recommend this one!
So, first the bad, and the reason I list a 4-star review. These gates will not fit a 36" opening without buying the additional "extender kit," which is another $19.99. In the US, code calls for a 36" opening on most entry-ways. Additionally, there are a couple ways the product can be installed, and if you want the "virtually invisible" install (a hyperbolic claim, by the way; they are in no way "nearly invisible"), you have to mount the hinge portion on the inside edge of a wall (I'll update with photos later today). If they simply included two more 1" slat pieces, the gate would fit most US applications as-is. Don't think that you'll stretch it to the full extent either; in order to get the gate to snap-in easily, some "accordion" must remain---pulling it to its furthest extent requires quite an effort, and I suspect puts undue strain on the mounting points.
Another thing that would help the install would be to have a spacer-piece made that matches the 1/2" deep base-board on many US walls. The recommendation is to install the gate just above the floor, but this is not feasible if you have a baseboard. In this case, you would need to custom-fabricate a spacer with a trim piece so that the hinge and attachment rails are vertical. Lastly, the actuation pressure required on the release is a bit tough; it's fine if you have good hands but might be tough if you have arthritis or something. In the end, this is really sort of necessary though because if it were too easy toddlers would defeat the gate quickly.
Now, with the flaws out of the way, here is the good, and why I have 3: Once installed, there is simply no other gate like it. It is simple to use, fairly attractive, quiet (other than an audible "click" when it engages, it is silent) and lacks the foot or paw holds of mesh gates that make many such gates useless. It doesn't rely on intense tension to stay up, which is a system easily defeated by a big dog or kid, or a running start. It does fold as advertised, easily getting out of the way when needed.
Conclusion: measure your doorway, and if you are near the end of the scale ('they claim 35") just do yourself a favor and get the extender kit at the same time, then write BabyDan and tell them they made the product ~2" too short :).
