While Bomb In A Birdcage has the same beauty and musical depth as the 2007 debut One Cell In A Sea, It is improved by a wonderfully developed Pop sensibility. This album features 11 infectious, bubbly fun tracks infused with gorgeous lyrics and danceable beats.
The best thing about this CD for me is the irony of the lyric is songs like "What I Wouldn't Do," "Happier," and "Swan Song." But this is pleasant listening throughout and all day.
These first two CDs by Sudol are a recent discovery and a new love, following Adele, and Dido, and before that Sade, perhaps going all the way back to Martha Davis of The Motels. A long way from the days when Jagger/Richards and Elvis Costello wrote an angrier lyric for my head. Less testosterone now, I guess. But not so little that I could follow Frenzy to the 2012 Pines CD. What else you got?
Buy it, listen to it, enjoy it!
I loved her first CD and this one is more of the same goodness. Songs like "Elements" call up the passions and storms of love, much as "Ashes and Wine" on the first CD. Songs like "Electric Twist" rock out and will have your foot tapping for sure. And the boppy "Blow Away" will have you dancing and singing if you are alive on this earth.
What a fine songwriter and what an artistic force. She is like an elemental spirit, a whirling dervish, the yin-yang of pure joy and utter sadness. She is a delightful, pure expression of creative beauty, joy of life, hope, turmoil, contradiction, commitment. Anyone who could write "Last of Days" (from her first CD, One Cell in the Sea) is someone worth listening to and here's more. Be glad.
Since it is about inspiration, I find Alison a growing young woman who is not sure where she belongs in the big gathering but certain of it that nature is her guardian and guide. Whether she will choose to critic the foundations or remain passive for a divine life which her wisdom may uncover, a longer pause preceeds every song she would give our world. But I sense a lady Gaga is full of answers, good and bad to this angel and she will decide where to go from there.
Had this album been their debut instead of their sophomore album it would be perfect and on its own it definitely merits four stars. However, most fans like myself were looking forward to more of the same from A Fine Frenzy-they were basically their own genre and it was wonderful to listen to One Cell in the Sea and enjoy its natural sound-putting on One Cell was like going outside to a forest with a large river and a waterfall without ever having to leave the room. I dont think its unfair to compare and simply put this album is rather unremarkable compared to the first. Still its worth a purchase for Allison's vocals alone. I look forward to the next album to see what product they'll put out but if its not another One Cell in the Sea that would be fine as I'll cherish it all the more. Three stars.
