Whenever I buy a light and sound display piece like this, I always expect it to be a bit toyish in appearance. This version of the Yamato is nothing of the sort. It is just as detailed as the Bandai model kits, though it does lack some of the minor hull markings present as decals on those kits. So far as details go: there are swappable versions of the anchors, with chains or without; the ship's stabilizer wings can be inserted into spring closed slots in the sides of the ship; the guns are fully pose-able; there are six fighters that can be mounted on the base or on separate stands; there is a door in the hull which allows a view of the hangar and the hangar door on the bottom of the ship opens as well; and the smokestack missiles can be extended a bit to make them visible. Lighting effects include the bridges, the engines and the wave motion gun. Sound effects include the different gun and torpedo firing noises, launch engine sound effects and the alert klaxon. Five musical themes are also included.
Minor, press-fit assembly is required. A good small Phillips-head screwdriver is a must to keep from stripping the screw which allows access to the Yamato's batter compartment. Overall, the pointy, pokey bits can be a bit delicate, but that's only a problem while dusting thanks to the remote control effects which allow the ship's sound and light effects to be operated without manipulating the model. 4 AAA batteries are also required.
Pro's: Highly detailed; solid construction; everything worked as advertised; fairly sophisticated light and sound effects (plays 5 different, surprisingly long musical clips and 6 different sound effects--wave motion gun revs up, shuts down other lights as it "draws power," then changes colors for the discharge); well-made (all antennas and spires straight and properly aligned); arrived early
Con's: smallish; sound is necessarily not very loud or imposing
Cautions: As others have said, it's a bit small; some assembly required, and all instructions are in Japanese (but you can figure it out with the pictures); when using the remote to activate sound and lights, some experimentation is needed---to activate the wave motion gun, hold down the "A" button (not marked) continuously, then release when the cannon turns blue--I almost returned mine, thinking that feature wasn't working at first.
This piece is amazing in its details and solid construction. To my eye, it is a perfect reproduction of the ship. It feels great in the hand and looks amazing from every angle on display. The lights and sounds, while not something I'd been looking for, are fun to have and turn on once in a while. There's nothing I'd change.
If I had to criticize anything, it would be that for a model of this quality, the plastic stand, while adequate, looks and feels cheap. For $10 more a more attractive composite stand would have been nice. But when sitting on the stand, the Argo is the star anyway.
Though it was sort of indulgent to spend this much on a model, as a long time fan I'm impressed with the work they've done on this piece and completely satisfied with this purchase. The wait for the right model was worth it.
Of all the modern releases -- this is by far the best. The ship looks great, I had a little bit of a time adjusting to the new snout but once I watched the 2199 cartoon it quickly became THE Yamato in my mind. It looks as if it flew right out of the screen.
This has all the bells and whistles of previous releases save for the moving AA guns of the last SOC but the detail is better. The lighting and lighting effects are better (and the lights stay on for a long time following activation). The remote is easy to use but I would prefer recessed buttons on the ship itself to activate the sounds and lights. The tiny ships are great, the guns move in a satisfying manner and the barrels can be positioned.
Most of the lower hull is metal so it feels like a powerful and tough Space Battleship should feel.
The best part about the ship though is that with the larger scale - everything gets bigger and all of the Yamato's myriad spines and fins and antennae become thicker and sturdier. Because of this, all concern over picking it up and enjoying the ship is removed. It feels like it can handle the decades of adventures that any old school or new Yamato/Star Blazers fan imagine upon getting this amazing thing.
The base comes with two different stands so you can pose your ship and different angles. It also come with stands for the small planes if you wanted to show them flying with the ship, if not then there are pegs on the base to hold them in place.
I haven’t tried the sound and light features yet, that will come later. A lot of people had doubts about this one but I feel as more and more people actually holds this piece of work in their hands and takes a good look at it, this will sell out quick. On that note, thank you again Amazon for cutting the price to $190.00 so I could buy it.
The ship comes securely packed in a beautiful, heavy duty box which does a good job of protecting the model. The Yamato comes with a nice stand that allows two display options. A standard level display and a banked stance. There is some minor assemble required: installing the turrets and catapults. The included painted fighters mount on the display stand. They are to scale, so the fighters are tiny.
The Yamato herself is beautiful. When holding her, she sports a nice solid feel due to the abundant use of diecast metal. This 17 inch ship has a nice two-tone finish and plenty of detail on the superstructure. The fighter bay door opens and the turrets rotate in unison using a knob on the left side of the hull. She also comes with optional wings that mount on the side of the hull.
With the included remote, the Yamato plays a number of exciting tunes from the show, as well as solid and energy main cannon sounds. The Wave Motion gun is particularly fun to fire. There is a separate on/off switch for the remote and the ship. With the ship powered on, the captain’s quarters and bridge structure lights up with a nice fluorescent green.
In closing, the Yamato 2199 model is well worth the money due to the diecast metal, the light and sound effects, and movable features.
I have no idea how many Bandai made, but this thing is most likely a limited edition collector's item so get it before it's too late. For Yamato fans, price should be no object (within reason that is).
