Amazonレビュー
The mid-'70s song "Play that Funky Music White Boy" was by Wild Cherry, but if you really want a bunch of pigmentally challenged males to play some funky music, then call on the Average White Band. This band of Scots was anything but average. This 1975 debut featured the smoking instrumental "Pick up the Pieces," which merged hard-bop precision with funk's wanton playfulness. Their vocal numbers, such as "Schoolboy Crush," were also very good. Much of the music from this record has been covered by smooth jazz artists yearning for an edge (like Candy Dulfer) and sampled by savvy DJs. The Average White Band ran short on ideas after a few recordings, but the ones presented here deserve your rapt attention. --Martin Johnson

I have not set out to write reviews of the music content as “beauty is in the ears of the listener”. These reviews are about the quality (or not) of the recorded sound. To read about how the reviews are done please see my profile.
• Clarity – very clear, excellent, no muddiness
• Channel separation - excellent
• Channel balance – very good, conventional left, right, centre. Instruments and vocals can be clearly identified and located
• Sound Stage – excellent, very well defined good use of both channels. Vocals centre stage with vocals. Guitars and backing vocals well placed
• Distortion – non audible
• Compression – non audible
• Atmosphere – superb like being in the studio with the band. An excellent mix with very good instrument placement and definition
• Bass – low frequencies – superb drum sound tight and punchy. Very good dynamic range. Bass guitar sounds stunning
• Treble – high frequencies – horns are outstanding, clear, crisp and well defined
• Vocals – wow just superb great sound and range
As a general rule of thumb recordings from the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s are nearly always better on the original vinyl. Remasters often fail to please as it’s just not possible to make a silk purse from a sows ear, i.e. the original recording lacks the necessary detail to be processed digitally and show an audible improvement. Indeed such processing can make the sound worse.
Modern recordings which have been processed digitally from start to finish can be as good as vinyl. CD’s are often unfairly criticised for being poor quality. This is not the case, it is the original recording or the process which is to blame. Modern “remasters” can both enhance and degrade a recording. The statement GIGO (Garbage In Garbage Out) is the limiting factor. Ignore this at your cost.
