Andrew Lang (March, 31, 1844 July 20, 1912) was a Scottish writer and literary critic who is best known as a collector of folk and fairy tales. Lang s academic interests extended beyond the literary and he was a noted contributor to the fields of anthropology, folklore, psychical research, history, and classic scholarship, as well as the inspiration for the University of St. Andrew s Andrew Lang Lectures. A prolific author, Lang published more than 100 works during his career, including twelve fairy books, in which he compiled folk and fairy tales from around the world. Lang s Lilac Fairy and Red Fairy books are credited with influencing J. R. R. Tolkien, who commented on the importance of fairy stories in the modern world in his 1939 Andrew Lang Lecture On Fairy-Stories.

5つ星のうち 3.0 Arabian Nights without the magic! 2013/9/29

Anglicized & condensed version of tales of the Arabian nights. Author says he deliberately took out all the Arabian & 'peripheral' stuff, but frankly that's what makes these stories so intriguing! Only simplified plots were provided with no 'smut' or 'colour', so after reading this book I purchased the Sir Richard Burton direct translation to get the real deal (we were travelling on the Silk Road & I wanted more authenticity). It was much more what I was after & I enjoyed it, but it was difficult to read & perhaps not everyone's taste.

Kids used to be introduced to these tales as a part of growing up, even though they might not have known the familiar stories were from this book. As children we thought the culture behind this collection was so exotic, but yet the concept was so understandable -- here are people from a different era and a different part of the world, yet we understand them and are interested in their experiences as if they were anything like our own. There's something endearing about the timelessness of this collection, though the stories are so many and are repetitive. I think that's why we were exposed to the individual tales in bits and pieces; the book cannot hold a child's attention when delivered as a whole. An adult will find things in it that nostalgically remind him of something from his childhood -- too bad developments in the modern world have spoiled the comfortable concept of Arabian Nights for us.

5つ星のうち 3.0 Interesting Collection 2016/5/21

This is basically the Grimm Fairy Tales equivalent for East Asia, India, and the Middle East. You can imagine these tales told orally by skillful speakers.

There are stories within stories within stories, an interesting device. (It's like "Inception," where you go down the dream layers and then have to return upwards, and then you have to try and remember the upper layers after time away from them.)

There are lots of kings and rulers and beautiful princesses and handsome princes. Very few good-looking people turn out to be jerks. There is magic and magical creatures, but not in every story. It's a great look at human imagination over the generations.

These are the main lessons from these tales: Traits such as industry, wisdom, graciousness, and generosity are admired. Greed, dishonesty, and laziness are scorned. Wealth is admired so long as you are generous with it. A good story may save your life. A good sob story will make people feel sorry for you and give you money. Everyone eventually gets what they deserve. Punishments are harsh, so beware!

I'm an Engineer aged 73. At my stage in life it is real fun to once again travel through the adventures we had when we were children and young adults. The Arabian Nights is one of such readings. Thanks Amazon for making available this enjoyment free to us. I have also purchased many other items from Amazon. Their services was always satisfactory. Hope Amazon will add more titles in the free-Ebook sector.

5つ星のうち 5.0 Some of the best stories ever told 2014/6/29

These are some of the best stories ever told. Enjoy reading them as an adult, then really enjoy them when you tell them to the kids in your life. Sir Richard Burton (the explorer, not Liz's husband) made the authoritative translation - the 16 volumes are worth reading if you like foot notes and take a break to read up on this extraordinary man. Other versions, such as Lang's, get the stories told faster and less complicated.
The stories were originally told around the campfire, and that is the best way to share them. I'v had kids return for me to share the tales with their children 30 years after I shared the stories with them.
Enjoy Lang's version, however,at some point dip into Burton's version to get close to the original.
