解散寸前の「comming down your way」もCDになりませんかねぇ?

excluding any live recordings or greatest hits albums (like 'golden biscuits'), these were the group's 3rd and 4th studio albums.....and they were definitely 2 of their finest! they were really coming into their own, finding their way, quickly climbing to the peak of their popularity and the dream of being who they wanted to be was still fresh in their creative outlook. i've seen a review that claimed they had trouble making a cohesive album. to that, all i can say is......this was a time when diversity of musical styles was still considered a precious asset, not a liability. it was a time when a blatant beatles influence was considered a good thing, and a wide range of diverse influences is one of the great legacies the beatles bestowed upon the music scene. 3dn's grasp of that notion is one of the things that made this group such a blessing. 'it ain't easy' was their 3rd album and was a short but grand album in the tradition of the time. it opened with 'woman', which is one of the strongest, most powerful hard rock tunes of 3dn's entire career. following with 'cowboy', which is mellower, sadder and just a touch of a nearly prog rock feel.....the title tune brings a country influence with harmonica......this was followed by their big radio hit 'out in the country' which was followed by an amusing novelty piece called 'good feeling 1957' which is a bust on the music of the late '50s, but it's also a tip-of-the-hat to not only the beatles' sense of humor, but also their drug-addled playfullness with special effects and background voices etc. next was an original piece, 'rock & roll widow', that showed 3dn's writing prowess, great vocal interplay and a special guitar solo at the end which toys with the stereo concept of bouncing the guitar back and forth between the speakers......an album highlight! next of course was the huge rocking hit, 'mama told me not to come'. next was a tune they bought from an unknown artist at the time named elton john. 3dn liked doing songs from unknown writers in hopes of helping these writers in their careers. when 3dn chose 'your song', they planned to release it as a single (partially to do elton a favor).....but elton was able to get his single out first, leaving 3dn in the dust.......this explains why 3dn singer danny hutton sings the actual melody of the song much more truly than elton ever did.......and 3dn's version of 'your song' really is a better version than elton's. the album ends with a strong rocking 'flower child' tune (not out of step with the album's 1970 release date) that again features talented interplay between singers.
their 4th album 'naturally' is in my opinion, their all-time best! their strongest rock album with more attention to guitar work than many of their other albums. an album highlight is called 'fire eater', which started as a warm-up jam by the band before they were actually supposed to start recording songs. the instrumental jam featuring michael allsup on guitar was so powerful and dynamic, the group decided to put this nearly-4-minute instrumental jam on the album. the album also features the hits 'one man band', 'liar' and their biggest hit 'joy to the world'. they originally rejected JTTW, but ultimately recorded it as a joke as a way of thumbing their noses at record execs who told them the album wasn't long enough.........little did they know it would be their biggest hit ever. the album has a lot of good rock and roll, but also has the group's telltale versatility with some good mellow pop and influences of gospel and soul. overall, i find it their most impressive album. and these two great albums together on one cd makes for an epic, groovy listening experience! sure, their big hits were fun. but like most bands of the time, much of their best work was not their radio hits! if you remember 3dn or just the year 1970 and the moods and sentiments and the rock and roll of the time, you owe it to yourself to get this far out collection of 2 wonderful albums!
can you dig it?

Big hits on original albums

Three Dog Night / It Ain't Easy & Naturally (two albums on one CD from BGO Records): Three Dog Night knew how to make a hit record, but not necessarily a cohesive album. Their albums were mainly collections of potential singles. That doesn't mean that the albums weren't entertaining, they were always entertaining (with the exception of the occasional clunker song). However, these two albums also have some of their biggest hits "Joy to the World", "Liar", "Mama told me not to come", "It Ain't Easy, and others. A good greatest hits album will make the band sound much tighter, but there are still a few gems to be found on these albums that never made it to the hit list. Overall, this CD is a solid four-star release.
