To start with I must say I am not the target demographic for this product, this is truly meant for the person on the go. Active and in shape or at least on that path. However I love listening to my Audio-technica ATH-M50's cans and my Audio-Technica ATH-cks55u buds. Both great and sound different but are within my sound scope. Until a few days ago I was using these to listen to music while driving a car. Now these Aftershokz Bluez 2S (AB2's from now on) are my daily drivers, literally. Now the sound quaility
I do not consider myself a base head but I do enjoy the low end as well as that pleasant rumble you get. These are faily weak on the bass and low end in general. It does make up for that lack of low end by vibrating, yes, vibrating. It is mildly odd at first but after about 30 minutes for me, it because a nice little feature that I didn't expect to like. Now where this really shines is with classic rock and pretty much anything with a kick drum, snare, or acoustic instrumentation in general. Most Rap genres are still fine to listen too but do lack that thumb unless there is heavy reverb or deep and thick bass, in which case you will get that vibration which I find to be a different experience and quite pleasant. In general most music is going to sound a little off if you are used to high quality headphones and buds. These will not sound better than ATH-M50's, sennheiser HD 598's, or Bose Quiet Comfort's. However these are better than your iphone buds, monoprice 108320's, and skull candies. I also had no problem with these being loud enough, i actually only have it about half way up and find it to be plenty loud. The sound stage is more like being at a concert then listening to a recording, its weird to explain but trust me, it is unique. The sound quality to me, if i had to put a price on the sound alone, would be around $70 cans. That sounds bad but these are pretty crisp and clear, not as smothered as you would think and considering the driver sizes are vastly different from over ear headphones this is to be expected. But thats not what this is about its about the total package, i mean look at beats, they are far too overpriced for sound alone these fall in that same category but not nearly as bad.. *podcasts and audiobooks are fantastic with these!
These to have some audio leaking if the room is silent, i saw someone asking so i thought i would address it here. People will hear your music in dead silence but not to the point where they will sing along. I dont think you will annoy anyone around you if listening to it at an average volume, on high it will be more noticable but if turned down for ambient sound then nobody will hear you.
We have confirmed that it does work, it is not perfect. For starters these are my first pair of bluetooth headphones I have owned but no listened too. Fairly these are some of the better sounding headphones, you do have to realize that these are bluetooth and because of that they will suffer in sound quality for this functionality, which is fine. The Bone Conduction technology here is a different experience to me and is nice. But it is not what you think it will be. This does not magically stream the music straight to your brain. On first use i thought these were cheap, i thought they were just using these as stereos beside my ear to simulate in/on/over ear headphones. But once you find the correct spot to set these you will be surprised. I mean the first time i put these in i was a little disappointed it wasnt filled with magic, but upon hearing everything around me i realized these were just as advertised. I do not think these are the future of music listening but they have a place in this market for sure and im sure with future products this design and technology will become more and more in line with better quality headphones. Overall i find the technology to be good and the wireless-ness of the headphones to be worth the price. The phone calls are fine and the microphone is fine as well, the controls to the headset are a little daft but functional. I would rather had seen sleeker controls on the opposite (right) side. Pairing was painless and was user friendly, no complaints.
To be as brief as possible, these are on the higher end of comfort. no more sore ears from clamping force, and no more removing buds to let your ears breathe. I actually played Overwatch with these as my main drivers for 5 hours and had very little ear fatigue. Charged them up and used them again to do my youtube and twitch listening and found them to be great. The design is not without flaws though. I would rather them have used a silicon band around the back that could freely adjust instead of an insert band or hard plastic. I have a small to average size head and found the band to be too tight for relaxed listening but without the band I found the band moving and hitting my chair. Even though these do not come into contact with your ear inside or out, you will still experience some inner ear fatigue but from experience its much less than conventional headphones.
I would have liked to have seen either a more comfortable band, higher quality audio, or a sleeker finish. The build quality is robust so that's a non-issue. but i feel that maybe removing the controls and mic you could have gotten a sleeker look or replacing them with bigger drivers or battery. The battery has lasted a consistent 5+ hours for me but i wouldnt complain if they could fit in a bigger battery throughout the back. I would suggest to Aftershokz that maybe creating to models of a headset, one for battery life and quality audio but bulkier and one for a smaller and sleeker profile while maintaining the current quality with mic features. Basically one for a power user and one for a more casual and "trendy and active" person. Those are just small gripes and my opinions on how to improve but i am no expert and do not know if that is even possible. This is not a problem at all but just a suggestion. If there could be a way to change the sound pads to different material and sized and think that would truly make these personalized and special, memory foam, gel, 1/2 inch tall 1 inch wide, etc. I do feel you could make these headphones "special" just like beats, almost like bragging rights and fashion. With some more customization, colors, and styles, these could be the next big thing honestly.
Absolutely beautiful, I felt like an unboxing youtuber while opening it. Honestly if that packaging made the headphones cost $5 more it would be worth it. Actually made me feel good while opening, great job. You also get a ton of goodies and information, i wouldn't change it if I were Aftershokz. (give the packaging designer a raise)
These have replaced my "to work" headphones. So I am guaranteed to listen to them at least 2 hours a day. I also use them off and on with my other headphones depending on my current situation. With company or with my lady I will wear these 100%. The convenience, audio quality, comfort and build quality make me say these are a great deal. You are buying a unique experience that will do exactly what it says. I would actually say that these should probably be more money, around $115 when all is said and done. So with all of this mentioned i do feel that these are worth purchasing if you lift, run, bike, drive, or just like relaxing with friend while enjoying personal pleasures. I wish i would have purshased the titanium model as its there flagship for now and for only $50 more i would love to see the difference or hear the difference rather. I do think these are worth your money if anything i said made you curious and I would and have recommend these to friends Dont expect the world, come in with reasonable expectations and you wont be disappointed. I dont write many reviews but this product made me want to contribute to their success, which should say something about how i feel about them.
Once you set all that, go to your widgets and drag it to the screen, the widget will look like the picture I uploaded. I haven't come up with a permanent EQ setting yet, but adjust it close to what I have in the picture, as a good starting place. Everyone's hearing is different, so you can make some minor adjustments for your liking. You have 3 custom slots you can save your custom EQ to. Sometimes the widget won't kick in, if you make changes and can't hear a difference, the widget didn't work, drag it off the screen and reapply. You should hear major differences, if it's functioning properly.
I've also noticed, if you make the neck band actually contact behind the top of your ear, you'll get more bass response. If you have a rooted Android device, go download viper for Android, excellent audio driver and suite for Android. If your device has Dolby Atmos installed, it will make these headphones shine with a good EQ setting. The EQ setting will cut your overall volume a bit, but the sound improvement is worth every penny. The EQ setting I have in the pick cuts alot of mids out, which these are really mid heavy, will help on sound bleed at Max volume. On bass heavy stuff you might need to cut the far left slider 60hz. If you go really heavy on one frequency it will drastically cut the others volume, just be aware of that.
The EQ setting in the pic, will bring out some of the high frequencies that are missing, tones the mids down and tightens up the low end alot. I'm also running the max bass on the internal EQ settings in the headphone. This will probably work on the titaniums, since I'm willing to bet the transducers are very similar. I'm familiar with most designs of conventional speakers, never delved much into bone conduction drivers.
From what I can tell in the expanded diagram on these they look to be mostly standard setup. Don't take my assumption for granted though. These might even be servo motor driven instead of a standard voltage driven speaker. If so they will last a bit longer as motors are more resilient.
Hope this helps someone to tame in the thin tinny sound and improves your experience with these headphones and any headphones for that matter on your Android.
I've had a chance to listen a bit more to these headphones. I originally tried these on my LG stylo 2, with the eq app I mention previously. I had time to pair them up to my ZTE Trek 2, with the Dolby Atmos engine that's baked in the factory rom. With the right EQ settings these things will beat your head in with bass. Its utterly amazing what they are capable of, they miss some of the lower sub frequencies of conventional headphones but not by much. I've done some studio mixing, and mastering in my day, its immediately evident on these the quality of the gear a song was recorded with versus other songs. You can literally hear the evolution of the quality of studio monitors. Use the EQ settings in the pics, and listen to for instance, One by Metallica, which was more likely mixed with Yamaha ns10s (the speakers you see in every interview on the mixing console with the little white subs) which don't repoduce anything much below100hz. Then listen to say Radioactive by the Pentatonix, or Almost Famous by G-Easy which was more than likely mixed with something similar like Event Opal monitors, paired with a sub. Old love by Eric Clapton surprised me how well it translated, for a recording done in 1988.
With the right source pushing the headphones, they are a beast, hitting your perception in a totally unique and different way.
I work in open ear envionment and it still works great.
Update: I take amazing care of these and am always cautious. Today (4/11/17) they cracked behind the left ear area on me. Still useable, no impact on function so I'll keep going.
Update 7/6/17. It's broken entirely, not realistically fixable. But very surprised the crack didn't give up until now.
Update 7/10/17. Registered the product a few days ago. Then submitted a warranty claim along with proof of purchase from here. Today they confirmed my new pair is on the way. OUTSTANDING warranty service.
